Transducers, LF Drivers, Compression Drivers, Horns and Crossovers
The core of any DIY speaker is the transducers, and this is where component choice matters most. We stock professional LF drivers from brands such as B&C Speakers and 18 Sound — from long-excursion subwoofer drivers through to midbass and full-range cones — alongside compression drivers for high-frequency duty in ferrite and neodymium versions. Match those to a suitable horn or waveguide and a passive crossover network, and you have a complete passive build.
Selecting components on the right parameters is what separates a good build from a guess: power handling, sensitivity, resonant frequency, voice-coil diameter, impedance and magnet type all feed into how the drivers behave in your chosen enclosure. Amplifiers
Passive DIY builds need amplification matched to the load. Our rack amplifier range, including RAM Audio and Work Pro, covers two- and four-channel models across a wide power band, with low-impedance and constant-voltage (70V/100V) options and DSP on selected models. The key is matching amplifier power and channel count to your cabinets — drive them properly and within their limits, and a DIY system holds up under real use. For active DIY builds, a plate amplifier mounts directly into the cabinet and powers the drivers from inside the box. These modules bring onboard amplification and DSP into the enclosure itself, which suits active subwoofers and active full-range designs where you want processing and power per cabinet without an external rack. We can advise on plate-amp and module options from RAM Audio’s PowerPack DSP range that include DSP-equipped units, to suit your build.
Accessories
A truly professional DIY cabinet requires more than just premium drivers; it needs rugged, field-tested hardware to survive the road. If you’d rather not cut and assemble the cabinets yourself, we can build them to a Surgesound design or to your own drawings. That covers material and bracing decisions, accurate port and baffle work, and finishing, so the box you mount your drivers into is built to the spec the design calls for. DSP Presets
A DSP amplifier or plate amp is only as good as the processing loaded into it. For driver-and-cabinet combinations we’ve supported, we can provide DSP presets — crossover, EQ, delay and limiter settings — so the build performs as intended from the start instead of being tuned by ear from scratch. This gets an active DIY system to a known-good baseline quickly and protects the drivers while you do it.
Measurement and Tuning
The last step is verifying that the build actually does what the design intended. Using Smaart-based measurement, we can check a DIY speaker’s real-world response and set crossover points, EQ, delay and limiters to match — confirming driver integration, output and protection rather than assuming them.
