18 Sound 8NMB750 – Premium 8-Inch Neodymium Mid-Bass with 75 mm ISV Voice Coil and Dual Distortion Reduction

The 18 Sound 8NMB750 is the most refined 8-inch mid-bass driver 18 Sound has ever made. It carries the highest force factor, the most sophisticated distortion reduction, and the lowest inductance-per-coil-size of any 18 Sound 8-inch woofer — a 75 mm ISV voice coil paired with dual distortion reduction using both an SDR demodulating ring for flux modulation cancellation and a copper ring for intermodulation distortion reduction. With 96.5 dB sensitivity, 18.7 Tm Bl, 350 W AES / 700 W program power handling, 6.1 mm Xmax, 80 Hz – 6000 Hz bandwidth, and 0.29 mH inductance, the 18 Sound 8NMB750 delivers the cleanest, most linear, most controlled mid-bass output available from any 18 Sound 8-inch driver.

The 18.7 Tm force factor is the highest of any 18 Sound 8-inch driver — surpassing the Tetracoil 8NTLW2000’s 17.5 Tm and the 8NW650’s 15.2 Tm. The 75 mm ISV coil generates more electromagnetic force than any smaller coil can produce, and the 18.7 Tm driving 35 g of moving mass provides the motor authority that the DDR dual-ring distortion reduction system is designed to exploit.

The dual distortion reduction system is the technology that separates the 18 Sound 8NMB750 from every other 18 Sound 8-inch woofer. The SDR handles flux modulation cancellation — reducing the harmonic distortion that occurs as the voice coil moves through the magnetic gap. The copper ring handles intermodulation distortion — reducing the unwanted frequency products that multiple simultaneous signals generate in the motor. Together, both rings linearise inductance in relation to both excursion and current variation, producing cleaner output at any power level than either ring alone can achieve. This is the same DDR (Double Demodulating Rings) technology used on the 10NW750 — 18 Sound’s most refined distortion reduction approach, brought to the 8-inch format.

The 0.29 mH Le is the lowest inductance of any 18 Sound 8-inch driver with a 75 mm coil. The dual rings’ combined inductance reduction produces an impedance curve that is flatter from DC to 6 kHz than the 8NMB420’s 0.35 mH SDR-only design despite the 18 Sound 8NMB750’s larger 75 mm coil. The DDR system reduces inductance more effectively than a single ring can manage.

18 Sound now lists the 8NW650 as the current alternative model. No current 8-inch driver in the range matches the 18 Sound 8NMB750’s combination of 18.7 Tm Bl, dual distortion reduction, and 0.29 mH inductance.

Design and Construction of the 18 Sound 8NMB750

The 18 Sound 8NMB750 uses a 75 mm (3-inch) aluminium ISV (Interleaved Sandwich Voice Coil) — the same coil diameter found on the 10NW750 and the sealed-back 8NM610 midrange. The ISV places conductor on both inner and outer surfaces of the former for mass-balanced, linear motor behaviour. The 75 mm coil is the largest fitted to any 18 Sound 8-inch woofer, providing more conductor length in the gap for the 18.7 Tm force factor and more thermal surface area for the 350 W AES power rating.

The dual distortion reduction system is the motor’s defining feature. 18 Sound implements this as two separate components — the DDR (Double Demodulating Rings) technology. The SDR (Single Demodulating Ring) is positioned in the magnetic gap to cancel flux modulations that occur as the voice coil moves in and out during excursion. These modulations cause the magnetic field strength to vary with coil position, generating harmonic distortion that increases with excursion. The SDR absorbs these variations.

The copper ring addresses intermodulation distortion — a different mechanism that generates sum and difference frequency products when multiple signals interact in the motor. The copper ring also reduces voice coil inductance, which is why the 18 Sound 8NMB750 achieves 0.29 mH Le from a 75 mm coil. Both rings linearise inductance simultaneously — the SDR linearises inductance versus excursion, and the copper ring linearises inductance versus current. The combined result is the flattest impedance curve and the lowest distortion of any 18 Sound 8-inch woofer.

The 18.7 Tm force factor driving 35 g of moving mass produces 96.5 dB sensitivity, 0.27 Qts, and 314 Hz EBP. The Bl/Mms ratio of 0.534 Tm/g provides strong motor authority — the motor controls the 35 g cone firmly through the 6.1 mm Xmax with 8.0 mm Xvar.

The 6.1 mm Xmax is stronger than the 8NMB420’s 5.8 mm, the 8NW650’s 5.5 mm, and the 8NTLW2000’s 4.4 mm. The 8.0 mm Xvar provides 31% additional displacement beyond the linear limit — the most Xvar of any 18 Sound 8-inch driver for transient peaks that push beyond the linear range.

The curvilinear cone uses 18 Sound’s high-damping pulp composition with water and UV repellent treatment — the same environmental protection found on the 8NTLW2000. The triple roll surround provides controlled, progressive compliance. Coated plates resist corrosion from salt and oxidation.

The external neodymium magnet assembly provides high flux concentration and excellent heat exchange. The 225 mm overall diameter is 15 mm wider than the standard 18 Sound 8-inch format (210 mm) — the larger 75 mm coil and dual-ring motor require a wider chassis. The 186 mm baffle cutout remains standard. The 105 mm depth is 6 mm shallower than the 8NW650’s 111 mm — the dual-ring motor is efficiently packaged.

At 3.5 kg, the 18 Sound 8NMB750 is the heaviest 8-inch woofer in the range — the 75 mm coil, dual rings, and external neo motor account for the mass. The 8NW650 (2.4 kg) and 8NTLW2000 (1.5 kg) are substantially lighter. The weight is the cost of the most sophisticated motor engineering at 8 inches.

Performance and Applications for the 18 Sound 8NMB750

The 18 Sound 8NMB750 delivers 96.5 dB sensitivity across an 80 Hz – 6000 Hz bandwidth. The 96.5 dB is 0.5 dB above the 8NW650 and 1.5 dB above the 8NMB420 — the 75 mm ISV coil and 18.7 Tm Bl extract the most output per watt from the 35 g cone assembly.

The 80 Hz – 6000 Hz bandwidth places the 18 Sound 8NMB750 in the mid-bass category. The 80 Hz lower limit and 88 Hz Fs confirm the driver operates from the upper bass upward — suitable for compact two-way systems where the driver handles mid-bass and mid-range duties, with a sub section handling deep bass below 80 Hz. The 6000 Hz upper limit provides extensive overlap with compression drivers crossed over at 2000 Hz.

The dual distortion reduction system’s advantage is most audible at high power levels. At moderate power, the difference between single-ring and dual-ring distortion reduction is subtle. At 200+ watts — where the voice coil is generating significant excursion while reproducing complex multi-frequency content — the DDR system produces audibly cleaner output. The SDR keeps the harmonics down. The copper ring keeps the intermodulation products down. Both rings keep the inductance linear. The result is mid-bass that stays transparent and defined at power levels where single-ring and no-ring drivers begin to sound compressed and muddy.

The 0.29 mH Le is the specification that crossover designers and DSP engineers will value most. The flat impedance curve from DC to 6 kHz means the driver presents a predictable, near-resistive load. Passive crossover networks need minimal impedance compensation. Active systems see consistent behaviour across the operating range. DSP filters work more accurately because the driver’s electrical behaviour matches the theoretical model more closely.

18 Sound recommends a 12-litre (0.42 ft³) vented enclosure tuned to 95 Hz. The 0.27 Qts and 314 Hz EBP confirm a motor-dominant mid-bass alignment — the high tuning frequency targets punchy, fast output in the 80–300 Hz range where live sound energy peaks.

The comparison to the 10NW750 places the 18 Sound 8NMB750 in the context of the dual distortion reduction family. Both share 75 mm ISV coils, SDR, and copper ring (DDR). The 10NW750 delivers more Xmax (7.5 vs 6.1 mm), more power (450 vs 350 W AES), and deeper bass reach (50 vs 80 Hz). The 18 Sound 8NMB750 delivers higher sensitivity (96.5 vs 94 dB), wider bandwidth (6000 vs 5000 Hz), lower inductance (0.29 vs 0.6 mH), and lighter weight (3.5 vs 3.8 kg). The 10-inch format moves more air. The 8-inch format is more efficient, reaches higher, and has lower inductance.

The comparison across the 8-inch woofer range gives builders four tiers. The 8NMB420 (51 mm ISV, SDR, 1.7 kg) is the lightweight entry with the lowest inductance of the single-ring designs. The 8NW650 (65 mm ISV, no rings, 2.4 kg) is the wide-bandwidth, motor-dominant option. The 8NTLW2000 (51 mm Tetracoil, 1.5 kg) is the lightest with the highest sensitivity and power. The 18 Sound 8NMB750 (75 mm ISV, DDR, 3.5 kg) is the most refined with the highest Bl, the dual distortion reduction, and the lowest inductance — the 8-inch mid-bass with the most sophisticated motor engineering in the catalogue.

Conclusion – 18 Sound 8NMB750 Mid-Bass Driver

The 18 Sound 8NMB750 is the most motor-refined 8-inch driver 18 Sound has ever made. The 75 mm ISV coil produces the highest Bl of any 18 Sound 8-inch woofer at 18.7 Tm. The DDR dual distortion reduction — SDR for harmonic distortion, copper ring for intermodulation — addresses distortion from two independent sources simultaneously. The 0.29 mH inductance is the lowest achievable from a 75 mm coil with dual-ring linearisation. And the 6.1 mm Xmax with 8.0 mm Xvar provides the most displacement of any ISV-equipped 8-inch mid-bass in the range.

The 3.5 kg weight is the honest cost of this motor sophistication. For weight-critical line arrays, the 8NTLW2000 at 1.5 kg is the lighter choice. For maximum bandwidth, the 8NW650 at 6300 Hz reaches further. For the cleanest mid-bass output with the lowest distortion, the flattest impedance, and the most motor authority from any 18 Sound 8-inch driver, the 18 Sound 8NMB750 is the driver that carries the DDR dual distortion reduction technology to the 8-inch format. Eighteen point seven Tesla-metres, double demodulating rings, 0.29 millihenries — the most refined 8-inch mid-bass in 18 Sound’s history.
