1″ Exit HF Driver

18 Sound HD1050 – Titanium-PEN 1-Inch Driver with the Lowest Crossover Point in Its Format

The 18 Sound HD1050 one-inch exit high-frequency compression driver has been designed for use in high-quality audio systems. Equipped with 18 Sound’s proprietary Phase Plug architecture, the HD1050 has been designed to give high-level manufacturing consistency and a smooth coherent wavefront at the horn entrance across the whole working frequency range.

The diaphragm assembly is composed of a titanium dome sandwiched to a proprietary treated polyester suspension unit. It has been designed to maintain low resonance, lowering the minimum crossover point value at 1.4 kHz — the lowest recommended crossover point of any 1-inch driver documented across this session, below the HD1000 and HD1040’s shared 1.6 kHz and well below the HD1030’s 1.8 kHz. This directly mirrors the same titanium-on-PEN diaphragm philosophy and low-resonance design goal documented on the HD1480T and HD2080T at larger throat sizes.

The phase plug, with its short openings and high flare rate value, assures low distortion and demonstrates remarkable improvements in mid-high frequency reproduction.

Design and Construction of the 18 Sound HD1050

An edge-wound aluminium voice coil, wound on proprietary treated Nomex, completes the diaphragm assembly. Thanks to its physical properties, the proprietary treated Nomex former has a 30% higher value of tensile elongation at a working operative temperature (200°C) when compared to Kapton — the identical figure documented consistently throughout every compression driver covered in this session’s HF range. This feature enables proper energy transfer control from the voice coil to the dome in real working conditions, and this proprietary former material is also suitable for use in higher moisture content environments.

The HD1050 powerful ceramic magnet assembly has been designed to obtain 16 kGauss in the gap within a compact ferrite motor structure — matching the HD1040’s flux density exactly.

At 1.6 kg, 110 mm overall diameter, and 60 mm depth, the 18 Sound HD1050 matches the HD1040’s physical footprint exactly, confirming both drivers share the same fundamental chassis platform, differing primarily in diaphragm material and construction.

Performance and Applications for the 18 Sound HD1050

The 18 Sound HD1050 delivers 107 dB sensitivity across a 1.6 – 20 kHz frequency range, with a recommended crossover of 1.4 kHz using a 12 dB/octave or steeper high-pass filter — matching the HD1040’s sensitivity exactly, while offering a genuinely lower practical crossover point than every other 1-inch driver documented in this session.

The 50 W AES / 100 W continuous power handling matches the HD1000’s figures, exceeding the HD1040’s 80 W and the HD1030’s 60 W — positioning the 18 Sound HD1050 as the highest power-handling option within 18 Sound’s 1-inch family alongside the HD1000.

For applications where the lowest possible crossover point matters within a 1-inch throat format — allowing the compression driver to take on more of the mid-band workload from the woofer — the 18 Sound HD1050 delivers 18 Sound’s most flexible crossover option in this throat size.

Conclusion – 18 Sound HD1050 Compression Driver

The 18 Sound HD1050 completes this session’s exploration of 18 Sound’s four-driver 1-inch compression driver family — the titanium-PEN HD1000, ellipsoidal-suspension titanium HD1030, treated polyethylene HD1040, and this titanium-dome-on-PEN-suspension HD1050, which delivers the lowest crossover point (1.4 kHz) and matches the HD1000’s top power handling within this smallest throat format.

For applications specifically requiring maximum crossover flexibility from a 1-inch compression driver, the 18 Sound HD1050 delivers 18 Sound’s most capable answer in this format.
