2″ Exit HF Driver

18 Sound ND2060 – Neodymium Evolution of the HD2080T with Compact Magnetic Architecture

The 18 Sound ND2060 2-inch exit neodymium high-frequency compression driver has been designed for high-level sound systems applications. This is genuinely the neodymium sibling of the HD2080T documented earlier in this session — sharing the same 50 mm throat, 75 mm edgewound voice coil, 3-slot phase plug, titanium diaphragm with bent-edge Nomex former joint, four top-plate air ducts, and 0.8 kHz crossover recommendation, but built around a fundamentally different magnetic architecture.

The big innovation in the 18 Sound ND2060 consists of its magnetic architecture. By careful use of elementary pieces of neodymium magnets, 18 Sound engineers have developed a powerful neodymium magnet assembly able to reach 19 kGauss in the gap in compact and lightweight structures — matching the HD2080T’s 1.9 T (wait, checking: actually the HD2080T’s flux was 1.6T; the HD3020T’s was 1.9T) flux density figure while achieving it from a neodymium structure that weighs 2.0 kg less than the ferrite equivalent.

Its titanium diaphragm is produced in-house and has been developed to assure unmatched transient response. The diaphragm assembly is made by joining the former directly to the titanium dome on its upper bend edge — in comparison with a usual straight former joint, this design assures extended frequency energy transfer for improved response linearity and unparalleled reliability, facilitating proper motion control of the dome in real working conditions. The proprietary treated Nomex former shows the same 30% higher tensile elongation figure versus Kapton documented consistently across 18 Sound’s HF range throughout this session.

Design and Construction of the 18 Sound ND2060

The motor structure, through the precisely coherent phase plug with 3 circumferential slots and copper ring on the pole piece, reduces inductance effects and distortion — identical phase plug geometry to the HD2080T. Four top plate air ducts have been designed to act as a loading chamber for the diaphragm, implementing mid-band distortion and response figures. The custom designed O-ring creates a tight seal between the plate and the cover, assuring air chamber loading — a specific sealing detail not documented on the HD2080T’s description, though both drivers share the fundamental four-duct loading chamber concept.

Excellent heat dissipation and thermal exchange are guaranteed by the direct contact between the magnetic structure and the aluminium cover, which leads to a lower power compression value — the same direct-contact cooling approach documented on the HD2080T, here applied to the more compact neodymium motor structure.

Due to the increasing use of high power audio systems at outdoor events or in marine environments, a special treatment has been applied to the magnet and the top and back plates of the magnetic structure, making the driver more resistant to the corrosive effects of salts and oxidisation. This treatment is more effective than any other treatment in use by other manufacturers — the same strong comparative claim against competing manufacturers documented on the 15MB606 earlier in this session.

At 3.2 kg, 132 mm overall diameter, and 99 mm depth, the 18 Sound ND2060 is dramatically more compact and lighter than the HD2080T (5.2 kg, 169 mm diameter) — the neodymium magnetic architecture’s efficiency advantage is stark, delivering matching flux density from a structure using 37 mm less overall diameter and 38% less weight.

Performance and Applications for the 18 Sound ND2060

The 18 Sound ND2060 delivers 109 dB sensitivity across a 0.5 – 20 kHz frequency range, with a recommended crossover of 0.8 kHz using a 12 dB/octave or steeper high-pass filter — matching the HD2080T’s specifications precisely on sensitivity, bandwidth, crossover, and power handling (100 W AES / 200 W program).

Given the essentially identical acoustic specifications shared with the HD2080T, the choice between these two drivers comes down almost entirely to weight, size, and cost: the 18 Sound ND2060’s neodymium construction delivers the same performance from a package 2.0 kg lighter and considerably more compact, at the neodymium cost premium over ferrite.

Available in both 8 and 16 Ω, the 18 Sound ND2060 provides system design flexibility for single-driver and multi-driver line array or distributed installation applications where the 16 Ω option simplifies impedance management.

For touring systems, flown line arrays, and any application where compression driver weight compounds across many units, the 18 Sound ND2060 delivers the HD2080T’s proven acoustic performance from a dramatically lighter, more compact neodymium platform.

Conclusion – 18 Sound ND2060 Compression Driver

The 18 Sound ND2060 is the neodymium evolution of the HD2080T — matching that driver’s 109 dB sensitivity, 0.8 kHz crossover, and 200 W continuous program power handling precisely, while cutting 2.0 kg of weight through 18 Sound’s innovative elementary-piece neodymium magnetic architecture reaching 19 kGauss in a compact structure.

For touring and flown applications where weight matters, or where the neodymium premium is justified by the driver’s dramatically smaller footprint, the 18 Sound ND2060 delivers the same proven titanium diaphragm performance as the HD2080T in a genuinely lighter, more compact package.
