B&C 12FW76 – Outstanding 12-Inch Ferrite Woofer with 100 dB Sensitivity and Premium Motor

The B&C 12FW76 is a ferrite 12-inch woofer that has no business being this good on paper. 100 dB sensitivity, 3.7% reference efficiency, 26.4 Tm force factor, an aluminium demodulating ring, and a 55 Hz – 3000 Hz bandwidth — all from a ferrite-motored driver with a 3-inch copper coil. The B&C 12FW76 delivers the motor authority and output of drivers costing and weighing considerably more, and it does it from a 12-inch frame that fits into compact cabinet designs where 15-inch drivers are too large.

The 26.4 Tm force factor is the number that demands attention. For context, that’s the same Bl as the B&C 15TBW100 — a 4-inch coil ferrite 15-inch sub — achieved here from a 3-inch coil in a 12-inch woofer. The 1.35 T flux density driving that coil is among the highest of any ferrite driver in B&C’s range, and the 75 g moving mass means the motor’s grip on the cone assembly is absolute. The result is a driver with a Qts of 0.18 and an EBP of 300 Hz — the most extreme motor-dominant parameters of any driver in B&C’s LF lineup.

Available in 4 and 8 Ω, the B&C 12FW76 is built for horn-loaded mid-bass bins, high-efficiency vented cabinets, and two-way speaker systems where maximum output per watt from a 12-inch driver is the primary design goal.

Design and Construction of the B&C 12FW76

The B&C 12FW76 uses a 76 mm (3-inch) copper voice coil wound on a glass fibre former. The 19 mm winding depth operating in an 11 mm magnetic gap yields 7 mm of linear one-way excursion (Xmax) with an additional 10 mm of travel (Xvar) before mechanical limits. That 17 mm total one-way excursion before damage provides solid headroom for a driver in this efficiency class, and the 10 mm Xvar is generous — it means the B&C 12FW76 absorbs transient peaks well beyond linear operation without mechanical failure.

The motor is the centrepiece. A ferrite magnet in a T-pole configuration produces 1.35 T of flux density — an exceptionally high figure for a ferrite motor — and the resulting 26.4 Tm force factor on the 75 g moving mass creates one of the highest acceleration factors of any 12-inch woofer available. An aluminium demodulating ring in the motor assembly reduces flux modulation in the voice coil gap, keeping harmonic and intermodulation distortion low as power and excursion increase. The demodulating ring is a premium feature rarely found on ferrite 12-inch drivers at this price point.

The exponential cone profile supports pistonic behaviour well into the upper frequencies, enabling the B&C 12FW76’s remarkable 3000 Hz upper bandwidth. The cone crosses over comfortably to a compression driver at 1.5–2.5 kHz, making this an ideal woofer section for two-way speaker systems. WP waterproof treatment on the front side provides moisture resistance.

A single spider handles suspension, paired with a triple-roll surround. At 8.55 kg and 147 mm deep, the B&C 12FW76 is heavier than you’d expect for a ferrite 12 — the high-flux motor assembly accounts for the mass. That weight is the engineering cost of 1.35 T flux density and 26.4 Tm Bl from a ferrite magnet. Every gram is working.

Performance and Applications for the B&C 12FW76

The B&C 12FW76 delivers 100 dB sensitivity and 3.7% reference efficiency across a 55 Hz – 3000 Hz bandwidth. That 100 dB from a 12-inch driver is exceptional — it matches the ferrite 15PLB76 and means the B&C 12FW76 produces the same output per watt as many 15-inch woofers from a frame that’s 65 mm narrower. A 500 W amplifier channel driving this driver produces output levels that would require over 900 W into a 97 dB driver to match.

The Thiele–Small parameters are the most extreme of any driver in B&C’s LF range. A Qts of 0.18 and an EBP of 300 Hz define a driver with massive electromagnetic damping — the motor’s control over the cone is absolute at all points of the excursion stroke. These parameters categorically exclude sealed enclosure use. The B&C 12FW76 demands a vented or horn-loaded enclosure, and it rewards that enclosure choice with tight, fast, perfectly controlled bass and mid-bass output.

B&C recommends a 40-litre (1.41 ft³) vented enclosure tuned to 65 Hz — an extremely compact cabinet with a high tuning that maximises output density in the 70–300 Hz punch zone. In horn-loaded enclosures, the B&C 12FW76 is in a class of its own among 12-inch ferrite drivers. The very low Qts, high Bl, exponential cone, and light moving mass are textbook horn-loading parameters, and the demodulating ring ensures the output stays clean as the horn’s acoustic loading increases the effective power on the driver.

Ideal applications for the B&C 12FW76 include:

  • Horn-loaded 12-inch mid-bass bins for live sound reinforcement
  • High-efficiency compact vented two-way tops and stage monitors
  • Two-way active speaker systems crossing over to a compression driver at 1.5–2.5 kHz
  • Portable PA systems where 12-inch cabinet size is required with 15-inch-class output
  • DIY builds where amplifier power is limited and every watt needs to count

Conclusion – B&C 12FW76 Woofer

The B&C 12FW76 is the most motor-dominant ferrite 12-inch woofer in B&C’s range. The 26.4 Tm force factor, 1.35 T flux density, and resulting Qts of 0.18 / EBP of 300 Hz create a driver with a level of electromagnetic damping that is unmatched in the 12-inch format. When the motor has this much authority over a 75 g cone, the output is fast, tight, and utterly controlled — the kind of transient response that makes horn-loaded cabinets and high-efficiency vented tops come alive.

The inclusion of a demodulating ring on a ferrite 12-inch woofer is a genuine differentiator. It means the B&C 12FW76 not only produces 100 dB sensitivity, it does so with measurably lower distortion than competing designs without the ring. At 500 W AES and 3000 Hz bandwidth, you get enough power handling for serious professional use and enough upper-frequency extension to cross over comfortably to any compression driver on the market.

For horn-loaded 12-inch bins, compact two-way tops, stage monitors, and any application where a 12-inch driver needs to deliver 15-inch-class sensitivity with low distortion and extreme motor control, the B&C 12FW76 is the ferrite 12-inch woofer that sets the benchmark. The 40-litre enclosure keeps the cabinet small, the 100 dB sensitivity keeps the amplifier small, and the demodulating ring keeps the output clean.
