B&C 18IPAL – Best-in-Class 18-Inch IPAL Subwoofer Driver for Extreme Controlled Output

The B&C 18IPAL is B&C’s 18-inch entry in the IPAL platform — a purpose-built subwoofer driver engineered to work as one half of a closed-loop drive system with Powersoft’s IPAL amplifier modules. With 1.5 T of flux density, 20 mm of linear excursion, 3.3% reference efficiency, and a 1700 W AES power rating backed by 3400 W continuous program power, the B&C 18IPAL delivers extreme output from a compact 150-litre vented enclosure while the IPAL feedback loop handles the control.

The numbers on the B&C 18IPAL don’t behave like a conventional subwoofer driver — and they’re not supposed to. A Qts of 0.14 and an EBP of 229 Hz would make this driver nearly unusable with a standard amplifier. But paired with the Powersoft IPAL module’s real-time impedance monitoring and motional feedback, those extreme parameters become advantages. The amp module compensates for the driver’s behaviour in real time, delivering tighter transient response, lower distortion, and sustained output at levels that conventional drivers simply can’t maintain.

This is not a drop-in replacement for a conventional 18-inch sub driver. The B&C 18IPAL is a system component — and when deployed with its matching Powersoft module, it’s among the most capable 18-inch subwoofer platforms available.

Design and Construction of the B&C 18IPAL

The B&C 18IPAL uses a 116 mm (4.5-inch) aluminium voice coil wound on a glass fibre former. The 44 mm winding depth operating in a 12 mm magnetic gap yields 20 mm of linear one-way excursion (Xmax) with an additional 15 mm of travel (Xvar) before mechanical limits. That 35 mm total one-way excursion before damage gives the IPAL feedback system substantial room to operate — the amp module can push the driver hard while maintaining real-time control over excursion limits.

The motor is the standout. A neodymium inside-slug magnet in a T-pole configuration produces 1.5 T of flux density — the highest of any driver in B&C’s 18-inch range by a significant margin. That massive flux concentration drives a force factor (Bl) of 24.5 Tm and is the foundation of the B&C 18IPAL’s 3.3% reference efficiency and 97 dB sensitivity. An aluminium demodulating ring reduces flux modulation in the voice coil gap, directly lowering harmonic and intermodulation distortion under load.

A ventilated voice coil gap allows air to circulate around the coil during operation, fighting power compression so the B&C 18IPAL maintains its rated output during sustained high-power use. Suspension is handled by a double silicone spider with optimised compliance and a triple-roll surround. The radial cone features TWP waterproof treatment on both sides for weather resistance.

With a 2 Ω nominal impedance and 1.3 Ω DC resistance, the B&C 18IPAL is designed exclusively for the IPAL amplifier platform. Do not connect this driver to a conventional power amplifier — the impedance is too low for standard amplifier topologies and will result in damage to the amplifier, the driver, or both.

Performance and Applications for the B&C 18IPAL

The B&C 18IPAL delivers 97 dB sensitivity and 3.3% reference efficiency across a 32 Hz – 1000 Hz bandwidth. That efficiency figure is the highest of any 18-inch driver in B&C’s range — higher than the 18NW100’s 2.7%, higher than the 18RS115’s 1.95%, and achieved alongside 20 mm of Xmax. The IPAL motor architecture makes this possible by running extreme flux density (1.5 T) through a low-impedance voice coil optimised for the Powersoft amplifier’s output stage.

The Thiele–Small parameters are unlike anything else in the range. A Qts of 0.14 and an EBP of 229 Hz reflect a driver with extremely strong electromagnetic damping — the motor has an iron grip on the cone at all times. In a conventional system, these parameters would make the driver over-damped and unusable. In the IPAL ecosystem, the Powersoft module uses this tight coupling to its advantage, adjusting drive signal in real time based on motional feedback from the voice coil. The result is controlled, low-distortion output that stays consistent regardless of thermal state or excursion position.

B&C recommends a 150-litre (5.3 ft³) vented enclosure tuned to 35 Hz. That’s a compact cabinet for a high-output 18-inch sub, which is part of the IPAL platform’s appeal — you get extreme output density from cabinets that are lighter, smaller, and easier to deploy than conventional alternatives delivering similar SPL levels.

Ideal applications for the B&C 18IPAL include:

  • Compact touring subwoofer cabinets paired with Powersoft IPAL amplifier modules
  • High-output permanent install systems in clubs, arenas, and large venues
  • Cardioid subwoofer arrays using IPAL-driven cabinets for directional bass control
  • Festival and outdoor systems requiring maximum output from minimum truck space
  • System designs where the IPAL feedback loop’s distortion and thermal management justify the platform investment

Conclusion – B&C 18IPAL Subwoofer Driver

The B&C 18IPAL is the most efficient and most tightly controlled 18-inch subwoofer driver B&C makes. With 3.3% reference efficiency, 1.5 T flux density, and 20 mm of Xmax — all managed in real time by the Powersoft IPAL feedback loop — this driver operates at a level that conventional amplifier-and-driver pairings simply cannot reach. The motional feedback system keeps distortion low, prevents thermal runaway, and maintains output consistency regardless of how hard or how long the driver is working.

The compact 150-litre recommended enclosure makes the B&C 18IPAL a compelling choice for touring companies and system integrators who need maximum output density from standard 18-inch cabinets. You get output that approaches many 21-inch systems from a smaller, lighter footprint — a real advantage when truck space and rigging weight are constrained.

The B&C 18IPAL requires a commitment to the Powersoft IPAL ecosystem — this is not a driver you can run with a conventional amplifier. But for builders and integrators who understand what the IPAL platform delivers, the B&C 18IPAL is the 18-inch subwoofer that redefines what’s possible from the format.
