B&C DE14 – Versatile 1-Inch Polyester Compression Driver with Dual Bolt Pattern and 16 Ohm Option

The B&C DE14 is the smooth-treble counterpart to the DE12TC in B&C’s 1-inch compression driver range. It shares the same 36 mm aluminium voice coil, the same 30 W AES power handling, the same 105 dB sensitivity, and the same 90 mm body — but replaces the DE12TC’s titanium diaphragm with a Mylar polyester membrane that delivers a smoother, more forgiving high-frequency character. For builders who want the larger coil’s power handling and thermal headroom but prefer natural-sounding treble over titanium’s brighter signature, the B&C DE14 is the 1-inch driver that delivers both.

The B&C DE14 also adds two features the DE12TC doesn’t carry: a dual bolt pattern that expands horn compatibility, and availability in both 8 and 16 Ω impedance variants. The dual bolt pattern — a 76 mm M5 two-hole pattern plus a 57 mm M6 three-hole pattern — means the B&C DE14 mounts onto a wider range of 1-inch horns than any other driver in B&C’s compact HF range. The 16 Ω variant opens up series-parallel wiring in multi-driver line array and column speaker configurations where impedance management across multiple HF drivers is critical.

At 1 kg and 49 mm deep, the B&C DE14 shares the DE12TC’s compact footprint while offering more system design flexibility through the dual mounting and impedance options. The user-replaceable Mylar diaphragm (part number MMD0148) keeps the driver field-serviceable — a practical advantage for rental companies and touring rigs where a blown diaphragm needs to be swapped between sets, not between shows.

Design and Construction of the B&C DE14

The B&C DE14 uses a 36 mm (1.4-inch) aluminium voice coil driving a Mylar (polyester) diaphragm through a 1-inch exit throat. The 36 mm coil matches the DE12TC exactly — same diameter, same material, same thermal capacity — which is why both drivers share the same 30 W AES power rating. The step up from the DE10’s 25 mm coil to the DE14’s 36 mm provides roughly 44% more coil surface area for heat dissipation, making the B&C DE14 significantly more robust under sustained high-power operation than the smaller-coil entry-level driver.

The Mylar diaphragm is the design choice that defines the B&C DE14’s tonal character. Polyester is lighter and more compliant than titanium, which gives it a fundamentally different high-frequency behaviour. Where titanium produces a brighter, more forward treble with a characteristic resonant peak in the upper frequencies, Mylar rolls off more gradually and smoothly — producing treble that sounds natural and musical rather than aggressive and forward. The practical difference is significant: the B&C DE14 sounds well-balanced in systems running without DSP or parametric EQ, while the DE12TC’s titanium peak often benefits from corrective processing to tame the upper treble.

The magnetic circuit produces 1.45 T of flux density — identical to the DE12TC and strong for a 1-inch compression driver. The 0.14 mH inductance is very low, keeping the impedance curve flat through the 2 kHz – 18 kHz operating range and supporting predictable crossover behaviour. The combination of 1.45 T flux and the 36 mm coil produces 105 dB sensitivity — the same as the DE12TC, confirming that the two drivers share the same motor and coil architecture and differ only in diaphragm material.

The dual bolt pattern is a genuine differentiator. The B&C DE14 provides both a 76 mm (3-inch) diameter pattern with two M5 holes at 180° and a 57 mm (2.2-inch) diameter pattern with three M6 holes at 120°. The 76 mm pattern matches the DE10 and DE12TC for compatibility with the same horn range. The 57 mm pattern expands compatibility to a second family of horn flanges — giving builders more options when selecting or matching horns for their cabinet design. No other driver in B&C’s compact 1-inch range offers both patterns.

At 1 kg and 49 mm deep, the B&C DE14 is 50 g lighter than the DE12TC (1.05 kg) — the Mylar diaphragm weighs slightly less than the titanium equivalent. The 90 mm overall diameter matches both the DE10 and DE12TC, making all three physically interchangeable in the same horn and cabinet.

Performance and Applications for the B&C DE14

The B&C DE14 delivers 105 dB sensitivity across a 2 kHz – 18 kHz bandwidth with a recommended crossover frequency of 2.2 kHz. Every performance specification matches the DE12TC — same sensitivity, same bandwidth, same recommended crossover, same power handling. The difference is entirely in the treble character and the additional system design flexibility the dual bolt pattern and 16 Ω variant provide.

The 2.2 kHz recommended crossover pairs naturally with B&C’s wideband 10 and 12-inch woofers. In a two-way system, the woofer handles everything below 2.2 kHz and the B&C DE14 takes over from there — covering the presence region, upper harmonics, sibilance, and air frequencies through to 18 kHz. The Mylar diaphragm’s smooth treble character means the crossover transition sounds natural and seamless, without the brightness boost that titanium can introduce in the overlap region.

The 16 Ω variant is a system design feature that the DE10 and DE12TC don’t offer. In multi-driver HF configurations — line arrays with multiple compression drivers per element, column speakers with distributed HF sections, or systems using parallel driver pairs — the 16 Ω variant allows builders to wire two drivers in parallel for an 8 Ω combined load, or four in series-parallel for 16 Ω. This impedance flexibility simplifies amplifier matching and ensures even power distribution across multiple HF drivers without requiring impedance-matching transformers.

The 30 W AES power handling is sufficient for most compact and mid-sized two-way systems. The polyester diaphragm handles thermal stress differently from titanium — Mylar is more heat-resistant than many builders assume, and the 36 mm coil’s thermal mass provides a solid foundation for sustained operation. For applications where the HF section is running at moderate to high power levels for extended periods, the B&C DE14 delivers more reliable sustained performance than the DE10’s 20 W rating can support.

The smooth Mylar treble makes the B&C DE14 particularly effective in applications where the speaker system will be used without DSP processing. Passive two-way crossover designs, simple active crossover setups without parametric EQ, and DIY builds where the builder wants a plug-and-play HF driver that sounds balanced out of the box all benefit from the B&C DE14’s natural-sounding polyester character. The driver doesn’t require corrective EQ to sound right — it just does.

Ideal applications for the B&C DE14 include:

  • Two-way PA tops paired with 10 or 12-inch woofers where smooth treble is preferred
  • Live sound reinforcement and vocal PA where natural high-frequency reproduction matters
  • Multi-driver HF configurations using the 16 Ω variant for impedance management
  • Passive crossover designs where the Mylar diaphragm’s smooth rolloff simplifies filter topology
  • Compact stage monitors and wedges
  • Upgrades from DE10 installations needing more power handling while staying with polyester
  • Systems requiring the 57 mm three-hole bolt pattern for horn compatibility

Conclusion – B&C DE14 Compression Driver

The B&C DE14 is the most versatile 1-inch compression driver in B&C’s compact HF range. It delivers the same 105 dB sensitivity, the same 30 W AES power handling, and the same 36 mm coil as the titanium DE12TC — but with the smoother, more natural treble character of a polyester diaphragm, the dual bolt pattern that fits more horns, and the 16 Ω variant that opens up multi-driver configurations. No other 1-inch driver in B&C’s range offers all three of those advantages in one package.

The decision between the B&C DE14 and the DE12TC is straightforward: titanium for brighter, more detailed, more forward treble in systems with DSP correction available; polyester for smoother, more forgiving, more natural treble in systems running without processing or with simple crossover designs. Both share the same motor, the same coil, the same body, and the same sensitivity — the only difference is diaphragm material and the system design flexibility the B&C DE14 adds through its dual bolt pattern and impedance options.

For two-way PA systems, stage monitors, multi-driver arrays, passive crossover builds, and any application where a 1-inch compression driver needs to deliver clean, smooth high-frequency output with maximum horn compatibility and wiring flexibility, the B&C DE14 is the polyester 1-inch that does it all. Same power as the titanium, smoother treble, more mounting options, more impedance choices — the most complete 1-inch package in B&C’s compact HF range.
