18 Sound 12NCX750H – Asymmetric-Dispersion 12-Inch Neodymium Coaxial with 70° × 50° Coverage and 110 dB HF Sensitivity

The 18 Sound 12NCX750H is the PA-optimised variant of 18 Sound’s compact 12-inch coaxial platform. Where the 12NCX750 produces an 80° conical pattern for stage monitoring applications, the 18 Sound 12NCX750H produces a 70° × 50° asymmetric pattern that provides wider horizontal coverage than vertical — the dispersion geometry that front-of-house PA, side-fill, and installed sound applications require. The asymmetric exit profile also produces 110.3 dB HF sensitivity — 3.3 dB above the 12NCX750’s 107 dB and the highest HF sensitivity of any 12-inch coaxial in 18 Sound’s range.

The 110.3 dB HF sensitivity is the most striking specification difference from the conical 12NCX750. The tighter 70° × 50° coverage concentrates the compression driver’s output into a smaller listening window, raising the SPL within that window by a substantial margin. For PA applications where the compression driver needs to project treble into the audience at distance, the 18 Sound 12NCX750H delivers more HF reach from the same 64 mm EWAL titanium compression driver than the wider-coverage 12NCX750 can achieve.

The 70° × 50° pattern matches the 15NCX750H exactly — the same asymmetric coverage scaled to the 12-inch format. Wider horizontal for audience coverage, tighter vertical for controlled spill. Both LF and HF sections share the same acoustic axis, maintaining the coaxial point-source coherence that eliminates lobing and comb-filtering regardless of the dispersion pattern.

The trade-off for the asymmetric pattern and higher HF sensitivity is lower LF sensitivity — 95.3 dB versus the 12NCX750’s 97 dB — and narrower LF bandwidth — 4000 Hz versus 5000 Hz. The different cone-as-waveguide profile needed for the asymmetric HF pattern affects the LF section’s acoustic behaviour, reducing its upper-frequency extension and efficiency. Design and Construction of the 18 Sound 12NCX750H

The 18 Sound 12NCX750H shares the 12NCX750’s core platform. The LF and HF transducer sections, the motor, the coils, and the chassis are the same. The difference is the HF exit profile and cone-waveguide geometry that produce the asymmetric dispersion pattern.

The LF section uses the same 75 mm (3-inch) copper ISV (Interleaved Sandwich Voice Coil) found on the 12NCX750. The ISV architecture places conductor on both inner and outer surfaces of the former, creating the mass-balanced coil that delivers linear motor behaviour. The copper winding sustains the 400 W AES / 800 W program power rating. The aluminium SDR demodulating ring reduces flux modulation during excursion.

The 17.5 Tm force factor driving 47 g of moving mass produces 95.3 dB sensitivity and 3.8% reference efficiency. The 1.7 dB lower LF sensitivity and 1% lower efficiency compared to the 12NCX750’s 97 dB and 4.8% reflect the different cone profile required for the asymmetric HF waveguide. The cone’s shape is modified to produce the 70° × 50° HF pattern, and that modification changes the LF acoustic loading — the LF section produces less output per watt as a consequence of optimising the cone-waveguide for asymmetric HF dispersion.

The 60 Hz – 4000 Hz LF bandwidth is 1000 Hz narrower at the top than the 12NCX750’s 5000 Hz. The asymmetric cone profile affects the LF section’s upper-frequency behaviour more significantly than it does on the 15-inch platform (where the 15NCX750H actually gained 200 Hz of upper bandwidth versus the 15NCX750). The 4000 Hz upper limit still provides adequate overlap with the HF section above the 1.2 kHz crossover — nearly two octaves of overlap for smooth crossover transitions.

The curvilinear paper cone with water-repellent treatment, 5.5 mm Xmax, 58 Hz Fs, 0.29 Qts, and 187 Hz EBP are essentially identical to the 12NCX750. The LF alignment is the same — the same motor-dominant, vented-enclosure-focused alignment from the same ISV coil and SDR motor.

The tighter asymmetric coverage concentrates more HF energy into the listening window — which is why the 18 Sound 12NCX750H achieves 110.3 dB HF sensitivity versus the 12NCX750’s 107 dB. The same compression driver produces 3.3 dB more output per watt within the coverage area because the energy is focused into a smaller angular window.

The 110.3 dB HF sensitivity is the highest of any 12-inch coaxial in 18 Sound’s range. It exceeds the 15NCX750H’s 109 dB by 1.3 dB — the 12-inch cone-waveguide’s different geometry produces even more HF concentration than the 15-inch version. For PA applications where the HF section needs to project at distance, the 18 Sound 12NCX750H’s 110.3 dB provides the most reach of any coaxial in the 12-inch format.

The single neodymium magnet motor powers both sections. The 4000 Hz LF bandwidth provides nearly two octaves of overlap with the HF section above the 1.2 kHz crossover point. While narrower than the 12NCX750’s 5000 Hz, the overlap is sufficient for smooth crossover transitions in both active and passive designs.

18 Sound recommends enclosures as compact as 40 litres — the same minimum volume as the 12NCX750. The 0.29 Qts and 187 Hz EBP define the same motor-dominant vented alignment. The T/S parameters are essentially identical between the two variants.
