12″ Woofer Driver

18 Sound 12ND710 – Dual-Purpose Mid-Bass and Midrange 12-Inch Neodymium Driver with 101 dB Sensitivity

The 18 Sound 12ND710 has been specifically designed for use either as a mid-bass driver in compact two-way reflex enclosures or as a direct-radiating or horn-loaded, dedicated midrange driver, in multi-way touring and fixed installation concert and arena systems — a genuinely dual-purpose 12-inch platform that delivers 101 dB sensitivity, the highest of any conventional (non-AIC) 12-inch driver we’ve documented from 18 Sound, with Double Demodulating Rings for reduced distortion and inductance.

The neodymium magnet assembly assures high flux concentration, low power compression, and excellent heat exchange because the external magnet configuration is considerably more efficient than traditional under-pole magnet topology. Consequently, high levels of force factor and power handling with an optimum power-to-weight ratio have been achieved — the 18.0 Tm force factor driving just 40 g of moving mass produces the driver’s exceptional sensitivity and the 0.20 Qts extreme motor dominance that matches the 12ND940’s most refined alignment.

Direct coupling of the special design basket and magnetic assembly with the large heat sink facilitates thermal flux through the ambient air, increasing the power handling capabilities and lowering the power compression — the same integrated heatsink philosophy found on the 12ND830 and 12ND930, applied here to a driver with a fundamentally different application focus: mid-band definition and dual midrange/mid-bass versatility rather than pure bass extension.

The already low distortion and sound quality are further improved by the use of Double Demodulating Rings technology (DDR), designed to dramatically reduce the intermodulation and harmonic distortion and improve the transient response. Available in both 8 and 16 Ω, the 18 Sound 12ND710 offers the widest bandwidth (6000 Hz) of any 12-inch ND-series driver we’ve covered — 18 Sound lists the 12ND930 as the alternative/current model.

Design and Construction of the 18 Sound 12ND710

The 18 Sound 12ND710 implements Interleaved Sandwich Voice coil technology (ISV), in which an aluminium coil is wound inside and outside a high-strength fibreglass former, providing better thermal and mechanical performance than conventional coils. The same 75 mm coil diameter found across the ND-series platform, here optimised specifically for the mid-bass and midrange application this driver targets.

The curvilinear paper cone has been created with a special high-strength wood pulp designed to achieve the best possible linearity within its intended frequency range and to control bell-mode resonances around the cone circumference. The cone is carried by a multiroll suspension formed from a linen-like material which is more resistant to ageing and fatigue than traditional materials — providing controlled compliance through the driver’s relatively modest 5.0 mm Xmax, reflecting the sensitivity-and-definition-first design priority rather than maximum bass displacement.

Direct coupling of the special design basket and magnetic assembly with the large heat sink facilitates thermal flux through the ambient air, increasing the power handling capabilities and lowering the power compression — a physical thermal path engineered specifically for this driver’s basket geometry.

The already low distortion and sound quality are further improved by the use of Double Demodulating Rings technology (DDR), designed to dramatically reduce the intermodulation and harmonic distortion and improve the transient response. The DDR’s contribution to inductance control produces the 1.0 mH Le figure — reasonably controlled for a 75 mm coil without AIC assistance, though notably higher than the AIC-equipped 12NDA520’s 0.03 mH.

The 18.0 Tm force factor driving 40 g of moving mass produces 101 dB sensitivity and the 0.20 Qts / 260 Hz EBP alignment — the highest EBP of any conventional 12-inch ND-series driver we’ve documented, confirming this transducer’s extreme suitability for horn-loaded applications where motor dominance translates directly into tight, fast, precisely controlled mid-frequency output.

A proprietary humidity-block cone treatment makes the transducer suitable for outdoor use in adverse weather conditions. In addition, a special coating applied to both the top and back plates makes the 18 Sound 12ND710 far more resistant to the corrosive effects of salts and oxidisation.

At 4.4 kg, 315 mm overall diameter, 282 mm baffle cutout, and 141 mm depth, the 18 Sound 12ND710 matches the 12ND930’s weight exactly while carrying a notably different motor tuning optimised for sensitivity and mid-band control rather than maximum power handling.

Performance and Applications for the 18 Sound 12ND710

The 18 Sound 12ND710 delivers 101 dB sensitivity across a 60 Hz – 6000 Hz bandwidth — the highest sensitivity and widest bandwidth of any conventional 12-inch ND-series driver we’ve covered, exceeding even the current flagship 12ND940’s 100 dB and 3000 Hz upper limit by a considerable margin on both counts.

18 Sound recommends a 40-litre (1.41 ft³) vented enclosure tuned to 58 Hz — the most compact recommendation of any ND-series 12-inch driver we’ve documented, confirming the extreme motor-dominant alignment translates directly into minimal cabinet volume requirements.

In compact two-way reflex enclosures, the 18 Sound 12ND710 functions as a mid-bass driver with exceptional sensitivity and the wide 6000 Hz bandwidth providing substantial crossover overlap with a compression driver. In direct-radiating or horn-loaded configuration for multi-way touring and fixed installation concert and arena systems, the driver serves as a dedicated midrange, where the 0.20 Qts and 260 Hz EBP produce the tight, fast, precisely controlled output that horn-loaded midrange sections demand.

The 450 W AES / 700 W continuous program power handling is solid for a driver of this sensitivity and application class, and the DDR’s dual-ring distortion reduction ensures the intermodulation and harmonic distortion stay controlled at the power levels touring and arena systems demand.

The comparison across 18 Sound’s 12-inch ND-series drivers confirms the 18 Sound 12ND710 occupies a distinct niche. Where the 12ND730, 12ND830, 12ND930, and 12ND940 are all primarily woofer or mid-bass drivers with varying degrees of bass extension and power handling, the 18 Sound 12ND710 is explicitly dual-purpose — equally at home as a compact two-way mid-bass component or as a dedicated horn-loaded midrange driver in the largest touring and arena systems. Its 101 dB sensitivity and 260 Hz EBP are the specifications that make both roles viable from a single platform.

Conclusion – 18 Sound 12ND710 Mid-Bass and Midrange Driver

The 18 Sound 12ND710 is 18 Sound’s most sensitivity-focused conventional 12-inch driver — 101 dB from a 75 mm aluminium ISV coil with DDR, extending across a genuinely wide 60 Hz – 6000 Hz bandwidth. Specifically designed for dual application as either a mid-bass driver in compact two-way reflex enclosures or a direct-radiating and horn-loaded dedicated midrange driver in multi-way touring and arena systems, this versatility sets it apart from every other driver in the ND-series family.

The 0.20 Qts and 260 Hz EBP confirm extreme motor dominance suited to the most demanding horn-loaded midrange applications, while the 6000 Hz bandwidth and dual 8/16 Ω impedance availability give system designers substantial flexibility for compact two-way integration as well.

For touring, arena, and concert installations requiring a dual-purpose mid-bass or midrange 12-inch transducer with maximum sensitivity and minimal distortion, the 18 Sound 12ND710 delivers a genuinely distinctive specification within 18 Sound’s flagship 12-inch neodymium range.
