18 Sound 12ND730 – High-Output 12-Inch Neodymium Woofer with User-Serviceable Heatsink Mounting

The 18 Sound 12ND730 transducer has been designed to meet market demand for high-output woofers, capable of providing deep bottom-end in bandpass, horn, or small reflex enclosures. The level of distortion is kept very low within its application range. With a 75 mm copper ISV voice coil, high-force neodymium magnet assembly, 98 dB sensitivity, and 600 W continuous program power handling, the 18 Sound 12ND730 is suitable for high-loading enclosures such as subwoofers or two-way system reflex enclosures when coupled with a 1.4-inch to 2-inch compression driver.

The 18 Sound 12ND730’s most distinctive feature among 18 Sound’s 12-inch ND-series drivers is its 4 threaded backplate holes, which give the user the possibility to insert an external customised heat sink if further heat dissipation is required — a genuinely unique approach compared to the fixed, factory-integrated large heatsinks found on the 12ND830 and 12ND930. Rather than building thermal management into the driver at the factory, the 18 Sound 12ND730 leaves that decision to the installer, who can add a custom heatsink solution specifically matched to their application’s thermal demands.

The neodymium magnet assembly developed by 18 Sound’s engineers assures high flux concentration, low power compression, and excellent heat exchange since the external magnet configuration is considerably more efficient than traditional under-pole magnet topology, resulting in high levels of force factor and power handling with an optimum power-to-weight ratio.

At 3.8 kg — the lightest of 18 Sound’s flagship 12-inch ND-series drivers we’ve documented, and with a 45 Hz Fs that reaches deeper than the 12ND830, 12ND930, or 12ND940 — the 18 Sound 12ND730 combines genuine bass extension with minimal weight and depth (132 mm, the shallowest of the series). 18 Sound lists the 12ND930 as the alternative/current model.


Design and Construction of the 18 Sound 12ND730

The 75 mm Interleaved Sandwich Voice Coil (ISV) assembly is wound on a strong fibreglass former that improves force transmission and thermal power handling — copper winding, matching the 12ND930’s material choice rather than the 12ND830’s lighter aluminium approach, positioning the 18 Sound 12ND730 as a high-force, high-output design rather than a weight-optimised one.

The deep-profile curvilinear cone, made from a special high-strength wood pulp, has been designed to achieve the best possible linearity within its frequency range. The cone surround, made from a linen-like material, is highly resistant to ageing and fatigue. The in-house developed cone treatment is fully water repellent and also gives a significant degree of rigidity to the cone — the same dual-function treatment philosophy found on the 12ND830.

The 4 threaded backplate holes are the driver’s signature engineering feature, giving the user the possibility to insert an external customised heat sink if further heat dissipation is required. This modular approach to thermal management differs fundamentally from the 12ND830 and 12ND930’s integrated large-heatsink designs — rather than a fixed cooling solution built into the driver, the 18 Sound 12ND730 ships without one, leaving the choice of whether and how to add supplementary cooling to the system integrator based on their specific application’s demands.

The 19.2 Tm force factor driving 55 g of moving mass produces 98 dB sensitivity and the 0.23 Qts / 187 Hz EBP alignment — solidly motor-dominant, though not reaching the extreme territory of the 12ND940’s 0.20 Qts. The 45 Hz Fs is the deepest resonance frequency of any 12-inch ND-series driver we’ve documented from 18 Sound, positioning this specifically for deep bottom-end reproduction.

A special coating applied to both the top and back plates makes the 18 Sound 12ND730 far more resistant to the corrosive effects of salts and oxidisation.

At 3.8 kg, 315 mm overall diameter, 282 mm baffle cutout, and 132 mm depth, the 18 Sound 12ND730 is notably lighter and shallower than both the 12ND830 (4.3 kg, 140 mm) and 12ND930 (4.4 kg, 140 mm) — despite the copper coil winding that typically adds mass compared to aluminium, the driver’s overall construction keeps total weight and depth to the lowest figures in the ND-series comparison.


Performance and Applications for the 18 Sound 12ND730

The 18 Sound 12ND730 delivers 98 dB sensitivity across a 53 Hz – 5000 Hz bandwidth, matching the 12ND830’s bandwidth exactly while reaching a deeper 45 Hz Fs — the driver was designed to meet market demand for high-output woofers capable of providing deep bottom-end specifically in bandpass, horn, or small reflex enclosures.

18 Sound recommends a 60-litre (2.12 ft³) vented enclosure tuned to 50 Hz. The driver is suitable for high-loading enclosures, such as subwoofers or two-way system reflex enclosures when coupled with a 1.4-inch to 2-inch compression driver — a notably wider compression driver compatibility range than the 12ND930’s specific 1.4-inch recommendation, suggesting the 18 Sound 12ND730 was engineered with particular flexibility for larger-format HF pairings.

The 600 W continuous program power handling, combined with the optional user-installed heatsink capability, gives system integrators genuine control over the driver’s thermal ceiling based on their specific deployment. For applications running at moderate power where the standard cooling is sufficient, no additional heatsink is needed. For sustained high-power touring or installed applications where thermal headroom matters more, the 4 threaded backplate holes provide a straightforward mounting solution for supplementary cooling.

The level of distortion is kept very low within its application range — the copper ISV coil’s balanced, mass-distributed winding provides the same fundamental linearity found across 18 Sound’s ISV range, here without SDR or DDR ring assistance, relying on the coil geometry itself for distortion control.
