The 18 Sound 15NCX1000 is the highest-power 15-inch coaxial transducer in 18 Sound’s range. With 100 mm (4-inch) voice coils in both the LF and HF sections — the largest coil diameter available in any 18 Sound coaxial — 600 W AES / 1200 W continuous program LF power handling, a pure titanium HF diaphragm, and 90° conical dispersion, the 18 Sound 15NCX1000 delivers more sustained output from a 15-inch coaxial than any other driver in 18 Sound’s catalogue.

The 100 mm coils in both sections are the headline engineering specification. The LF section uses a 100 mm CCAW aluminium ISV coil — stepping up from the 15NCX910BE’s 75 mm — providing 78% more coil surface area for heat dissipation and the thermal foundation for the 600 W AES power rating. The HF section uses a 100 mm edge-wound CCAW (EWAL) coil driving a pure titanium diaphragm — the largest HF coil in any 18 Sound coaxial.

The 90° conical dispersion is 10° wider than the 15NCX910BE’s 80°, covering a broader listening area with the uniform coverage that coaxial point-source architecture provides. Both sections share the same acoustic axis — every frequency radiates from the same point in space, producing no lobing, no comb-filtering at the crossover, and consistent frequency response at every listening angle within the 90° coverage window.

The recommended crossover at 1.0 kHz is 200 Hz lower than the 15NCX910BE’s 1.2 kHz. The lower crossover means the HF section takes over earlier, giving the compression driver control of the mid-range from 1 kHz upward. The 100 mm HF coil’s larger radiating area and the titanium diaphragm’s stiffness support this lower crossover with authoritative output in the upper mid-range.

At 8.5 kg with a dual neodymium single motor, water-repellent cone treatment, and suitability for compact enclosures and stage monitors, the 18 Sound 15NCX1000 is built for applications where the 15-inch coaxial needs to handle the most power and cover the widest area.


Design and Construction of the 18 Sound 15NCX1000

The 18 Sound 15NCX1000 integrates two complete transducer sections into a single chassis powered by a dual neodymium magnet single motor assembly.

The LF section uses a 100 mm (4-inch) CCAW aluminium ISV (Interleaved Sandwich Voice Coil). The 100 mm coil is the same diameter as the voice coils found in 18 Sound’s most powerful standalone woofers and subwoofers — and it’s the largest LF coil fitted to any 18 Sound coaxial. The ISV architecture places conductor on both inner and outer surfaces of the former, creating the mass-balanced coil that delivers linear motor behaviour across the excursion range.

The 27.5 Tm force factor is the highest of any 18 Sound 15-inch coaxial LF section. The 27.5 Tm driving the 110 g moving mass provides strong motor authority — the Bl/Mms ratio produces firm damping and the 0.31 Qts that keeps the bass tight and controlled in vented enclosures. The heavier 110 g moving mass (versus the 15NCX910BE’s 86 g) reflects the larger 100 mm coil’s additional conductor mass.

An aluminium demodulating ring (SDR) in the LF magnetic circuit reduces flux modulation during excursion, minimising harmonic distortion at higher power levels. The combination of the ISV coil and SDR produces the clean, low-distortion bass output that professional applications demand from a 600 W AES driver.

The 44 Hz lower frequency limit and 53 Hz Fs reach deeper into the bass than the 15NCX910BE’s 50 Hz / 55 Hz. The 7.5 mm Xmax provides slightly more displacement than the 15NCX910BE’s 7 mm. Combined with the 881 cm² radiating area, the 18 Sound 15NCX1000’s LF section produces meaningful bass output deep enough for compact main PA and stage monitors to operate without a dedicated sub in many applications.

The curvilinear paper cone uses 18 Sound’s high-damping pulp composition. The cone is engineered to work acoustically with the HF exit at its centre, shaping the combined dispersion pattern while providing smooth LF response within the operating range. The water-repellent treatment provides outdoor durability.

The HF section uses a 100 mm (4-inch) edge-wound CCAW (EWAL) voice coil driving a pure titanium diaphragm. The 100 mm HF coil — matched to the LF coil diameter — is the largest HF section in any 18 Sound coaxial. The edge-wound construction packs more conductor into the gap per unit of coil height, maximising force output and HF sensitivity.

The titanium diaphragm is joined to a high-strength, high-temperature treated Nomex voice coil former at its upper bend edge. 18 Sound specifically highlights this bent edge joint — it assures extended frequency energy transfer and improves linearity compared to a straight former joint, with unparalleled reliability. The bent edge construction distributes the mechanical connection across a wider area, reducing stress concentrations and improving the dome’s controlled motion.

A copper sleeve on the HF pole piece reduces inductance at frequencies above 10 kHz, improving phase and impedance linearisation in the upper treble. The proprietary phase plug produces a smooth, coherent wavefront across the entire HF operating range with low distortion and remarkable improvements in mid-high frequency reproduction.

A specific HF exit profile maximises the coupling between the compression driver output and the woofer cone’s profile. The cone acts as a waveguide for the HF output, shaping the combined 90° conical dispersion.

The dual neodymium magnet single motor architecture powers both sections from a shared magnetic circuit. The high-grade neodymium keeps the total weight to 8.5 kg despite the dual 100 mm coils.

At 8.5 kg, 393 mm overall diameter, 354 mm baffle cutout, and 197 mm depth, the 18 Sound 15NCX1000 is 2 kg heavier but 8 mm shallower than the 15NCX910BE. The 12 mm flange thickness provides a secure mounting interface.


Performance and Applications for the 18 Sound 15NCX1000

The 18 Sound 15NCX1000 delivers 96 dB LF sensitivity from 44 Hz to 3600 Hz and 108 dB HF sensitivity from the 1.0 kHz crossover point upward. The 12 dB sensitivity difference between sections is managed through the crossover network, with the HF section padded to match the LF output level.

The 600 W AES / 1200 W continuous program LF power handling is the highest of any 18 Sound 15-inch coaxial — 33% more than the 15NCX910BE’s 450 W AES. The 100 mm ISV coil’s thermal mass sustains this rating during extended operation. For touring systems, festival monitors, and high-output installed sound where the coaxial runs at sustained high power for hours, the 18 Sound 15NCX1000 provides thermal headroom that the smaller-coil 15NCX910BE can’t match.

The 96 dB LF sensitivity is 3.5 dB lower than the 15NCX910BE’s 99.5 dB — the larger 100 mm coil’s heavier 110 g moving mass reduces the LF efficiency. At full rated power, however, the 18 Sound 15NCX1000’s higher power handling compensates. The combination of 96 dB and 600 W AES produces approximately the same maximum sustained SPL as the 15NCX910BE’s 99.5 dB at 450 W — with the 18 Sound 15NCX1000 having more thermal margin to sustain that output longer.

The 1.0 kHz recommended crossover is the lowest of any 18 Sound 15-inch coaxial. The 100 mm HF coil and titanium diaphragm produce authoritative output from 1 kHz upward, taking over from the woofer in the upper mid-range. The lower crossover means the horn — formed by the woofer cone acting as a waveguide — controls directivity from 1 kHz, producing smoother directivity behaviour through the crossover region.

The HF section’s 130 W AES / 260 W continuous program power handling is 10 W more than the 15NCX910BE’s 120 W / 240 W. The 100 mm EWAL coil’s larger thermal mass supports sustained high-power HF operation. The titanium diaphragm handles the mechanical stress of sustained output without the cost premium of beryllium.

The choice between the 18 Sound 15NCX1000 and the 15NCX910BE reflects different priorities.
