18 Sound 15W500 – Lightweight High-Sensitivity 15-Inch Ferrite Woofer with 100.5 dB Output

The 18 Sound 15W500 is a fine example of a high-quality transducer providing the right balance between performance and engineering costs. This ferrite low-frequency driver satisfies the demand for a 15-inch loudspeaker which combines excellent linearity with good sensitivity and power handling characteristics. Designed for two-way or multi-way reflex systems, the 18 Sound 15W500 delivers 100.5 dB sensitivity — the highest of any 15-inch driver in this comparison — from a 65 mm coil that is dramatically smaller than the 75 mm coils found on every other ferrite 15-inch platform we’ve documented, resulting in a driver that weighs 4.3 kg, nearly half the weight of its 75 mm-coil siblings.

Design and Construction of the 18 Sound 15W500

The 65 mm (2.5-inch) aluminium voice coil employs 18 Sound’s Interleaved Sandwich Voice Coil (ISV) technology, in which a high-strength fibreglass former carries windings on both the outer and inner surfaces to achieve a mass-balanced coil. This results in an extremely linear motor assembly with a reduced tendency for eccentric behaviour when driven hard.

Voice coil cooling has been achieved by incorporating airways between the chassis back plate and the magnetic top plate, allowing heated air from the voice coil and gap to be channelled away and dissipated by the chassis basket. This technology is the result of a meticulous 3D CAD design project. 18 Sound specifically credits improved heat dissipation via a unique basket design as a defining feature.

The 12.6 Tm force factor driving 55 g of moving mass produces 100.5 dB sensitivity and the 0.52 Qts / 90 Hz EBP alignment — both figures the most extreme in their respective directions of any 15-inch driver we’ve documented. The unusually high Qts and low EBP together indicate a driver genuinely optimised for either sealed enclosure use or vented cabinets tuned significantly below resonance, distinct from the vented-only orientation of the 75 mm-coil ferrite drivers.

At 4.3 kg, 387 mm overall diameter, 353 mm baffle cutout, 161 mm depth, and 11 mm flange, the 18 Sound 15W500 is dramatically lighter than every other 15-inch driver documented in this comparison — less than half the 15W700’s 8.5 kg and roughly half the 15W930’s 8.0 kg, despite sharing a comparable overall diameter and baffle cutout footprint.


Performance and Applications for the 18 Sound 15W500

The 18 Sound 15W500 delivers 100.5 dB sensitivity across a 50 Hz – 4500 Hz bandwidth — 1.5 dB above the 15W700’s 99 dB and the highest sensitivity of any ferrite 15-inch driver in 18 Sound’s range covered so far. The 4500 Hz upper bandwidth sits between the 15W930’s 3600 Hz and the 15W700’s 5000 Hz.

18 Sound recommends a substantial 140-litre (4.94 ft³) vented enclosure tuned to 52 Hz — the largest recommended cabinet volume of any 15-inch driver in this comparison, a direct consequence of the driver’s high Qts and Vas alignment. For applications where a sealed enclosure is preferred, the 0.52 Qts is genuinely compatible with that topology, producing a smoother, more extended rolloff shape than the tightly vented-oriented drivers elsewhere in the range.

The 350 W AES / 500 W continuous program power handling is the lowest of any 15-inch driver covered — the smaller 65 mm coil’s reduced thermal mass compared to the 75 mm-coil siblings accounts directly for this lower ceiling.
