18 Sound 15W750 – Versatile High-Power Ferrite 15-Inch Woofer with Triple Impedance Availability
The 18 Sound 15W750 low frequency transducer meets the specific market demand for a loudspeaker which combines good linearity and efficiency with high power handling capabilities, containing a 75 mm aluminium voice coil. Although primarily intended for use in tuned reflex enclosures, the versatile characteristics of the 18 Sound 15W750 render it suitable for a wide variety of enclosure types, particularly as a subwoofer or as an LF driver in two-way systems. When used in a two-way system, 18 Sound recommends a 1.4-inch or 2-inch exit compression driver in order to obtain the best sound quality.
The deep-profile curvilinear paper cone has been made using a special high-strength wood pulp and designed to achieve the best possible linearity within its intended frequency range and to control bell-mode resonances around the cone circumference. The cone is carried by an unusually deep-profile, triple roll suspension formed of a linen-like material which is more resistant to ageing and fatigue than the traditional cotton-based materials used in conventional surrounds.
The 75 mm aluminium voice coil employs the Interleaved Sandwich Voice Coil (ISV) technology, in which a high-strength fibreglass former carries windings on both the outer and inner surfaces to achieve a mass-balanced coil. This results in an extremely linear motor assembly with a reduced tendency for eccentric behaviour when driven hard.
Available in 4, 8, and 16 Ω — the widest impedance range of any 15-inch driver we’ve documented — at 7.9 kg with generous low-frequency output making it suitable for both two-way systems and subwoofer applications, the 18 Sound 15W750 has no listed alternative/current model, confirming its status as an actively maintained current platform rather than a legacy design.
Design and Construction of the 18 Sound 15W750
The 75 mm aluminium voice coil employs the Interleaved Sandwich Voice Coil (ISV) technology, in which a high-strength fibreglass former carries windings on both the outer and inner surfaces to achieve a mass-balanced coil. This results in an extremely linear motor assembly with a reduced tendency for eccentric behaviour when driven hard.
The magnetic structure has been optimised using 18 Sound’s in-house FEA CAD resource that has maximised the flux density in the voice coil gap. The 17.6 Tm force factor driving 88 g of moving mass produces 97 dB sensitivity and the 0.37 Qts / 100 Hz EBP alignment — a notably flexible Qts for a 15-inch driver, and the lowest EBP we’ve documented in this size class, both pointing toward genuine sealed-enclosure compatibility alongside the vented applications 18 Sound recommends.
Excellent heat dissipation has also been achieved by incorporating air channels between the basket and the magnetic top plate.
The deep-profile curvilinear paper cone has been made using a special high-strength wood pulp and designed to achieve the best possible linearity within its intended frequency range and to control bell-mode resonances around the cone circumference. The cone is carried by an unusually deep-profile, triple roll suspension formed of a linen-like material which is more resistant to ageing and fatigue than the traditional cotton-based materials used in conventional surrounds — supporting the substantial 8.0 mm Xmax with long-term mechanical reliability.
Due to the increase in use of audio systems at outdoor events, the ability of the 18 Sound 15W750 to perform in adverse weather conditions or in areas of high humidity is a great advantage. This has been achieved using exclusive treatments which enable the cone and the magnetic plate to resist corrosion and render the cone water repellent at the same time.
At 7.9 kg, 393 mm overall diameter, 354 mm baffle cutout, 184 mm depth, and 13 mm flange, the 18 Sound 15W750’s baffle cutout is 6 mm narrower than the 15W930’s 360 mm — a notable dimensional difference between these two closely related 15-inch ferrite platforms.
Performance and Applications for the 18 Sound 15W750
The 18 Sound 15W750 delivers 97 dB sensitivity across a 50 Hz – 4300 Hz bandwidth. 18 Sound recommends a 110-litre (3.88 ft³) vented enclosure tuned to 42 Hz — matching the 15W930’s cabinet volume with a slightly higher tuning frequency.
The generous low-frequency output makes the 18 Sound 15W750 suitable for two-way systems and subwoofer applications, per 18 Sound’s own feature summary. The 1200 W continuous program power handling is substantial, and combined with the 8.0 mm Xmax and 850 cm² radiating area, produces serious volume displacement capability.
The 0.37 Qts is notably higher than the 15W930’s 0.22 — giving the 18 Sound 15W750 considerably more enclosure design flexibility. Where the 15W930 is firmly vented-oriented, the 18 Sound 15W750’s higher Qts and lower 100 Hz EBP make sealed enclosure designs genuinely viable alongside the recommended vented alignment, producing a gentler, more extended rolloff shape for applications where sealed-box characteristics are preferred.
The triple 4/8/16 Ω impedance availability provides maximum system design flexibility — the 4 Ω variant maximises power transfer for single-driver applications, while the 16 Ω option enables clean multi-driver wiring in line arrays and column speakers without the impedance complications that 8 Ω-only drivers create in multi-element systems.
The comparison to the 15W930 shows two closely related but distinctly tuned ferrite 15-inch platforms sharing the same 75 mm ISV coil concept. The 15W930 uses copper winding with SDR distortion reduction, delivering 98 dB sensitivity with a tighter 0.22 Qts specifically as the ferrite parallel to the 15ND930 flagship. The 18 Sound 15W750 uses aluminium winding without SDR, delivering 97 dB with a more flexible 0.37 Qts and the widest 4/8/16 Ω impedance range in the comparison — a more general-purpose, application-flexible platform rather than a direct ferrite/neodymium pairing.
Conclusion – 18 Sound 15W750 Woofer
The 18 Sound 15W750 combines good linearity and efficiency with high power handling capabilities from a 75 mm aluminium ISV coil, delivering genuine versatility across tuned reflex two-way systems and subwoofer applications. The 0.37 Qts and 100 Hz EBP give this driver more enclosure design freedom than most 15-inch platforms in 18 Sound’s range, while the triple 4/8/16 Ω impedance availability provides system design flexibility that few competing drivers match.
With no listed alternative model, the 18 Sound 15W750 stands as an actively maintained, currently recommended 15-inch ferrite platform — a genuinely versatile choice for builders who need enclosure flexibility, multi-impedance options, and 1200 W continuous program power handling from a proven ISV coil design.
