15″ Woofer Driver

18 Sound 15W930 – Ceramic Version of the Industry-Standard 15ND930 Extended Low Frequency Driver

The 18 Sound 15W930 low frequency transducer meets the specific market demand for a ceramic version of 18 Sound’s industry standard 15ND930 extended low frequency transducer, sharing the same 75 mm edgewound copper voice coil found on that neodymium flagship. Thanks to its versatility, the 18 Sound 15W930 can be used in two-way compact reflex enclosures with a 1.4-inch compression driver, in multiway systems, and in high-loading subwoofers as small as 70 litres — spanning compact reflex, bandpass, and horn-loaded configurations.

The deep-profile curvilinear cone, made with high-strength wood pulp, has been designed to achieve the best possible linearity within its frequency range. The cone surround, made from a linen material, is highly resistant to ageing and fatigue. The in-house developed cone treatment is humidity repellent and significantly dampens bell-mode resonances.

The already low distortion and high sound quality are further improved by the aluminium demodulating ring (SDR) used to reproduce instantaneous peaks on mid frequencies, reducing intermodulation distortion. The magnetic structure has been optimised using FEA CAD software that has maximised the flux density in the voice coil gap.

Due to the increase in use of audio systems at outdoor events, the ability of the 18 Sound 15W930 to perform in adverse weather conditions or in areas of high humidity is a great advantage — this has been achieved using exclusive treatments which enable the cone and the magnetic plate to resist corrosion and render the cone water repellent at the same time. At 8.0 kg, 18 Sound lists the 15ND930 as the alternative/current model — the neodymium version this ferrite driver was specifically developed to parallel.

Design and Construction of the 18 Sound 15W930

The 75 mm (3-inch) copper edge-wound voice coil assembly is wound on a strong fibreglass former to improve force transmission and power handling.

The 22.1 Tm force factor driving 97 g of moving mass produces 98 dB sensitivity and the 0.22 Qts / 143 Hz EBP alignment — solidly motor-dominant and vented-oriented, consistent with a driver engineered for the high-loading subwoofer and two-way applications 18 Sound describes.

Excellent heat dissipation has also been achieved by incorporating air channels between the basket and the magnetic top plate.

The deep-profile curvilinear cone, made with high-strength wood pulp, has been designed to achieve the best possible linearity within its frequency range. The in-house developed cone treatment is humidity repellent and significantly dampens bell-mode resonances — the same dual-function treatment philosophy found across 18 Sound’s premium driver range. The cone surround, made from a linen material, is highly resistant to ageing and fatigue.

Exclusive treatments enable both the cone and the magnetic plate to resist corrosion and render the cone water repellent at the same time, addressing outdoor and high-humidity performance directly.

At 8.0 kg, 393 mm overall diameter, 360 mm baffle cutout, and 185 mm depth, the 18 Sound 15W930 establishes the baseline mounting footprint for 18 Sound’s 15-inch driver range.

Performance and Applications for the 18 Sound 15W930

The 18 Sound 15W930 delivers 98 dB sensitivity across a 50 Hz – 3600 Hz bandwidth. 18 Sound recommends a substantial 110-litre (3.88 ft³) vented enclosure tuned to 36 Hz — a genuinely deep tuning frequency confirming this driver’s suitability for serious low-frequency extension in the subwoofer applications 18 Sound describes.

Thanks to its versatility, the driver serves three distinct roles: as the woofer in two-way compact reflex enclosures paired with a 1.4-inch compression driver, as a low-frequency component in multiway systems, and in high-loading subwoofers as small as 70 litres across compact reflex, bandpass, and horn-loaded configurations.

The 500 W AES / 800 W continuous program power handling, combined with the 7.5 mm Xmax and 850 cm² radiating area, provides substantial volume displacement and sustained power capacity for a 15-inch woofer of this class. The 33 Hz Fs confirms genuine deep-bass capability from a driver that also functions effectively as a two-way system woofer up to 3600 Hz.

As the ferrite counterpart to the industry-standard 15ND930, the 18 Sound 15W930 gives builders a direct choice between neodymium weight savings and ferrite cost efficiency while retaining the same 75 mm edgewound copper coil technology and SDR distortion reduction across both platforms.

Conclusion – 18 Sound 15W930 Woofer

The 18 Sound 15W930 was specifically developed to meet market demand for a ferrite version of 18 Sound’s industry-standard 15ND930 — sharing the same 75 mm edgewound copper voice coil, the same SDR distortion reduction, and closely comparable acoustic performance from a ferrite rather than neodymium magnetic circuit. The versatility across two-way compact reflex, multiway, and high-loading subwoofer applications makes this a genuinely flexible 15-inch platform.

For builders prioritising ferrite cost efficiency while retaining the proven 75 mm edgewound coil technology found on 18 Sound’s neodymium flagship, the 18 Sound 15W930 delivers a well-established, capable specification even as the company now points to the 15ND930 as the current recommendation.
