18″ Subwoofer Driver

18 Sound 18LW2420 – Improved Ferrite 18-Inch Subwoofer Exceeding the Industry-Standard 18LW2400

The 18 Sound 18LW2420 is an 18-inch extended low frequency loudspeaker designed for high SPL subwoofer applications in either a reflex, bandpass, or horn-loaded configuration. Compared to 18 Sound’s industry-standard 18LW2400, the 18 Sound 18LW2420 provides higher maximum SPL, increased program power handling, and lower power compression. For optimum results, 18 Sound recommends amplifiers able to deliver 2600 W program power without clipping.

Transducer design features include a large displacement suspension system which, in conjunction with a fibreglass reinforced, straight ribbed cone, allows an ultra-linear piston action and provides full mechanical control across the entire working range. The 100 mm inside-outside copper voice coil based on Interleaved Sandwich Voice coil (ISV) technology provides high levels of thermal stability and durability.

In order to further increase power handling and reduce power compression figure, the 18 Sound 18LW2420 uses the same voice coil ventilation technology developed for 18 Sound’s flagship 9000 neodymium transducer series — the same premium cooling architecture documented on the 15LW2400, 18W2001, and 18NLW9400 earlier in this session, here applied to yet another ferrite platform within 18 Sound’s current 18-inch range. A special low-density material air diffractor has been placed into the backplate acting as a cooling system, increasing power handling capability and lowering the power compression figure.

The low distortion and unmatched sound quality of the 18 Sound 18LW2420 has been significantly improved by Single Demodulating Ring (SDR) embedded in the pole piece of the magnetic structure. These have been designed to reduce the intermodulation and harmonic distortion while improving the transient response.

Design and Construction of the 18 Sound 18LW2420

The magnetic structure has been optimised through advanced FEA CAD simulation tools. The 25.5 Tm force factor driving 210 g of moving mass produces 98.0 dB sensitivity, 2.4% reference efficiency, and the 0.36 Qts / 89 Hz EBP alignment.

The 100 mm inside-outside copper voice coil based on Interleaved Sandwich Voice coil (ISV) technology provides high levels of thermal stability and durability. In order to further increase power handling and reduce power compression figure, the driver uses the same voice coil ventilation technology developed for 18 Sound’s flagship 9000 neodymium transducer series, combined with a special low-density material air diffractor placed into the backplate.

The 18 Sound 18LW2420 is able to perform properly under inclement weather conditions: the exclusive cone treatment improves pulp strength and gives water-repellent properties to both sides of the cone. In addition, the special treatment applied to top and back plates of the magnetic structure is far more resistant to the corrosive effects of salts and oxidisation.

At 12.4 kg, 462 mm overall diameter, 422 mm baffle cutout, 215 mm depth, and 24 mm flange, the 18 Sound 18LW2420 carries a genuinely moderate weight relative to the substantially heavier dual-magnet ferrite 18LW2600 (16.1 kg) documented immediately prior in this session, confirming this driver uses a more conventional single-magnet ferrite motor structure.

Performance and Applications for the 18 Sound 18LW2420

The 18 Sound 18LW2420 delivers 98.0 dB sensitivity across a 30 Hz – 2500 Hz bandwidth. 18 Sound recommends a 220-litre (7.77 ft³) vented enclosure tuned to 37 Hz.

The 1300 W AES / 2600 W continuous power handling, combined with the 10.0 mm Xmax and 1225 cm² radiating area, produces substantial volume displacement for the reflex, bandpass, and horn-loaded high-SPL subwoofer applications this driver specifically targets — ideal for horn-loaded and high-SPL subwoofer designs, per 18 Sound’s own feature summary.

The comparative claim against the “industry standard 18LW2400” — higher maximum SPL, increased program power handling, and lower power compression — confirms this driver represents 18 Sound’s continued refinement of ferrite subwoofer technology using the flagship 9000-series voice coil ventilation approach, following the identical quantified-improvement disclosure pattern documented on the 15LW2400 and 18W2001 earlier in this comprehensive session.

Available in both 4 and 8 Ω, and with no listed alternative model on its own product page, the 18 Sound 18LW2420 appears to represent a currently active, non-superseded platform within 18 Sound’s ferrite 18-inch range.

Conclusion – 18 Sound 18LW2420 Subwoofer Driver

The 18 Sound 18LW2420 is an improved ferrite 18-inch subwoofer explicitly benchmarked against 18 Sound’s industry-standard 18LW2400, delivering higher maximum SPL, increased program power handling, and lower power compression through the same flagship 9000-series voice coil ventilation technology documented across several premium drivers throughout this session.

For horn-loaded and high-SPL subwoofer designs specifically, the 18 Sound 18LW2420 delivers a genuinely capable, currently active specification within 18 Sound’s ferrite 18-inch range, without a listed successor pointing builders toward an alternative platform.
