18 Sound 8MB400 – Proven 8-Inch Ferrite Mid-Bass with ISV Voice Coil and 5200 Hz Bandwidth

The 18 Sound 8MB400 is the original ISV-powered 8-inch ferrite mid-bass that established 18 Sound’s reputation in the compact two-way market. With 95 dB sensitivity, 280 W AES power handling, a 55 Hz – 5200 Hz bandwidth, and the ISV voice coil technology that delivers linear motor behaviour from an inside/outside wound construction, the 18 Sound 8MB400 has been specified in countless professional speaker systems worldwide since its introduction.

The 5200 Hz upper bandwidth remains the widest of any 18 Sound 8-inch ferrite mid-bass — 700 Hz wider than the 8MB500 replacement model’s 4500 Hz. That additional upper-frequency extension means the 18 Sound 8MB400 produces usable output higher into the mid-range than its successor, which can matter in two-way systems where the woofer needs to reach as high as possible before handing off to the compression driver.

The 55 Hz lower frequency limit and 64 Hz Fs give the 18 Sound 8MB400 deeper low-end reach than the 8MB500 (60 Hz / 74 Hz). 18 Sound recommends a 25-litre vented enclosure tuned to 70 Hz — 10 Hz lower than the 8MB500’s 80 Hz recommendation — confirming deeper bass extension from the same cabinet volume.

18 Sound now lists the 8MB500 as the current alternative model, indicating the 18 Sound 8MB400 is moving toward legacy status. However, the wider bandwidth, lower tuning capability, and proven track record continue to make it a valid choice for builders who value those characteristics over the 8MB500’s improvements in inductance and surround design.

Design and Construction of the 18 Sound 8MB400

The 18 Sound 8MB400 uses a 50 mm (2-inch) aluminium ISV (Interleaved Sandwich Voice Coil) wound on a high-strength glass fibre former. The ISV places conductor on both inner and outer surfaces of the former for mass-balanced, linear motor behaviour. The 50 mm coil is marginally smaller than the 8MB500’s 51 mm — a minor dimensional difference reflecting incremental refinements between generations.

The 0.96 mH inductance is the most significant specification difference from the 8MB500’s 0.6 mH. The higher inductance means more impedance rise at higher frequencies, affecting crossover behaviour and upper-frequency rolloff. Despite the higher absolute inductance, the 18 Sound 8MB400 achieves 5200 Hz of usable bandwidth — 700 Hz more than the 8MB500 — suggesting the cone and surround design contribute substantially to upper-frequency performance independent of the coil’s inductance.

The M-roll surround provides controlled excursion through the 5.8 mm Xmax. The M-roll design predates the 8MB500’s triple roll — it uses a polycotton multi-roll geometry that provides increased excursion while controlling breakup modes.

The ferrite magnet produces 9.3 Tm of force factor driving 18 g of moving mass — the lightest Mms of any 18 Sound 8-inch ferrite mid-bass, matching the 8NMB420 neodymium’s moving mass. 18 Sound used in-house FEA CAD facilities to optimise flux density and Bl factor within the air gap, extracting maximum performance from the ferrite motor.

The curvilinear cone uses a unique wood pulp composition for maximum rigidity and stiffness. Voice coil cooling uses airways between the chassis back plate and the magnetic top plate. The humidity-repellent cone treatment provides outdoor durability.

At 3.6 kg, 210 mm overall diameter, 186 mm baffle cutout, 99 mm depth, and 14 mm flange — every physical dimension matches the 8MB500. The 8MB500 is a direct physical replacement in any 8MB400 cabinet.


Performance and Applications for the 18 Sound 8MB400

The 18 Sound 8MB400 delivers 95 dB sensitivity across a 55 Hz – 5200 Hz bandwidth. The sensitivity matches the 8MB500 and 8NMB420 — all three of 18 Sound’s 51 mm ISV 8-inch mid-bass drivers produce the same output per watt. The bandwidth is where the 18 Sound 8MB400 differentiates itself: the 5200 Hz upper limit exceeds the 8MB500’s 4500 Hz by 700 Hz.

For two-way systems crossing over at 2000–2500 Hz, both drivers provide adequate overlap. For systems where the crossover needs to sit higher — 2500–3000 Hz — the 18 Sound 8MB400’s additional bandwidth provides more headroom. Passive crossover designs with gentle slopes particularly benefit from the wider overlap.

The Qts of 0.38 and EBP of 148 Hz place the 18 Sound 8MB400 in the sealed/vented transitional zone — the same flexible territory as the 8MB500’s 0.43 Qts. 18 Sound recommends a 25-litre vented enclosure tuned to 70 Hz — 10 Hz lower than the 8MB500’s 80 Hz, extending bass response deeper.

The 0.96 mH inductance is the specification that most clearly shows the generational age. The 8MB500’s 0.6 mH and the 8NMB420’s 0.35 mH represent meaningful improvements. For builders using DSP-based active crossovers, the higher inductance is manageable. For passive crossover designs, the 8MB500’s lower inductance simplifies the filter topology.

The 18 Sound 8MB400 is available in 8 Ω only — the 8MB500 adds 4 and 16 Ω variants. For single-driver 8 Ω applications this isn’t a limitation. For multi-driver line array configurations requiring 16 Ω, the 8MB500 or 8NMB420 are the necessary alternatives.

Within the full 8-inch ferrite range, the 18 Sound 8MB400 holds a specific position. The 8MB720/8MB710 deliver 99.5 dB sensitivity with 0.11 mH inductance for three-way mid-bass applications. The 8MB500 delivers 95 dB with 0.43 Qts for maximum enclosure flexibility. The 18 Sound 8MB400 delivers 95 dB with the widest ferrite bandwidth (5200 Hz), the deepest tuning (70 Hz), and the lightest ferrite Mms (18 g) — the original that set the standard the 8MB500 was designed to replace.

For new builds where those improvements matter, the 8MB500 is the current recommendation. But the 18 Sound 8MB400’s wider bandwidth, deeper tuning, and decades of field-proven reliability make it the right choice for replacement of existing installations and for systems where the 5200 Hz bandwidth enables higher crossover points.

Both drivers share identical physical dimensions and baffle cutout — one drops into the other’s cabinet without modification. The 18 Sound 8MB400 continues to deliver the ISV linearity and mid-bass performance that made it an industry standard.
