1.4″ Exit HF Driver

18 Sound ND3SN – State-of-the-Art TPM Nitride Titanium Driver on the Larger 120mm Chassis

The 18 Sound ND3SN 1.4-inch exit Natural Sound neodymium high-frequency compression driver has been designed to fulfil state-of-the-art performances needed for present and future very high-quality sound reinforcement applications — sharing the exact 120 mm chassis and stronger ring magnet architecture documented on the ND3SA, but built around TPM nitride-coated titanium rather than the ND3SA’s aluminium-PEN diaphragm.

In addition to the next-gen titanium diaphragm of the standard ND3ST version, 18 Sound’s TPM nitride coat is applied, doubling the titanium stiffness and avoiding spurious resonances at very high frequencies, assuring a 3rd harmonic distortion lower than 0.05% over the whole working range — the same TPM technology and distortion specification documented on the NSD4015N and the smaller-chassis ND3N earlier in this session, here on the larger 120 mm platform.

The 18 Sound ND3SN neodymium magnet assembly has been designed to obtain 21 kGauss in the gap for major benefits in transient response — matching the ND3SA’s 2.1 T flux density figure precisely, confirming both drivers share the same magnetic architecture within this larger chassis family.

Design and Construction of the 18 Sound ND3SN

The motor structure, through the precisely coherent proprietary designed metal alloy phase plug with 4 circumferential slots and copper ring on the pole piece, reduces inductance effect and distortion. The diaphragm kit self-centering design allows high-precision mounting and at the same time makes the servicing procedure very easy — a genuinely valuable feature given the nitride-coated titanium’s precision manufacturing requirements.

The ability to perform properly under inclement weather conditions is a key point of 18 Sound’s philosophy — the special treatment applied to the magnet and plates is more effective than any other coating commonly used.

At 2.3 kg, 120 mm overall diameter, and 53 mm depth, the 18 Sound ND3SN matches the ND3SA’s physical footprint exactly — confirming both diaphragm variants share the identical larger chassis platform, distinct from the smaller 109 mm ND3A/ND3BE/ND3G/ND3N family covered earlier in this session.

Performance and Applications for the 18 Sound ND3SN

The 18 Sound ND3SN delivers 112 dB sensitivity across a 0.8 – 20 kHz frequency range, with a recommended crossover of 1.2 kHz using a 12 dB/octave or steeper high-pass filter. The 120 W AES / 240 W continuous power handling is genuinely consistent across both the feature bullets and specification table on this page — unlike the ND3SA’s internal inconsistency — confirming this is the higher power handling tier within 18 Sound’s larger 120 mm chassis family.

18 Sound now lists the ND3ST (the standard titanium version, without nitride coating) as the alternative/current model — giving builders a genuine three-way comparison within this larger chassis platform: the aluminium-PEN ND3SA, the TPM nitride-coated 18 Sound ND3SN documented here, and the standard titanium ND3ST.

Very fast impulse response for excellent transient reproduction and natural sound frequency response extended up to 20 kHz are 18 Sound’s own stated feature highlights, confirming this driver’s positioning at the premium end of 18 Sound’s 1.4-inch range.

Conclusion – 18 Sound ND3SN Compression Driver

The 18 Sound ND3SN brings TPM nitride-coated titanium technology to 18 Sound’s larger 120 mm compression driver chassis — matching the sub-0.05% third harmonic distortion specification documented on its smaller-chassis sibling, the ND3N, while delivering the full 240 W power handling and stronger 21 kGauss magnet consistent with this larger platform family.

For applications demanding state-of-the-art sound reinforcement performance with minimum harmonic distortion and full power handling, the 18 Sound ND3SN represents 18 Sound’s premium choice within the larger 120 mm chassis family, this session’s exploration of which now spans the aluminium-PEN ND3SA and TPM-coated 18 Sound ND3SN.
