B&C 10CL51 – Best Ultralight 10-Inch Neodymium Woofer at Just 1.3 Kilograms

The B&C 10CL51 weighs 1.3 kg. That makes it the lightest 10-inch professional woofer in B&C’s range — and one of the lightest 10-inch drivers available from any manufacturer. With 96 dB sensitivity, a 60 Hz – 4000 Hz bandwidth, 5.5 mm of linear excursion, and a 30.5 g moving mass from a 51 mm neodymium-powered platform, the B&C 10CL51 delivers the same sensitivity as the larger-coil 10CLA64 while saving an additional half kilogram and reaching 15 Hz deeper into the bass region.

The 2-inch aluminium voice coil is the smallest professional woofer coil in B&C’s 10-inch range, and it’s the engineering decision that makes 1.3 kg possible. Everything about the B&C 10CL51 is optimised for minimum weight — the coil, the motor, the cone, the 7 mm flange thickness, the 108 mm depth. No other driver in B&C’s LF range is this light, this shallow, or this compact.

B&C recommends a 32-litre vented enclosure tuned to 58 Hz. With a Qts of 0.38 that provides genuine sealed/vented flexibility, the B&C 10CL51 adapts to a wide range of cabinet designs — from compact vented two-way tops to sealed column speaker modules to multi-driver arrays where per-driver weight directly determines total system mass.

Design and Construction of the B&C 10CL51

The B&C 10CL51 uses a 51 mm (2-inch) aluminium voice coil wound on a glass fibre former. The 2-inch coil diameter is the smallest in B&C’s 10-inch woofer range — smaller than the CLA64’s 2.5-inch and the PS26/MD26’s 3-inch — and it’s the primary reason this driver weighs less than any other 10-inch woofer B&C makes. The 15 mm winding depth operating in an 8 mm magnetic gap yields 5.5 mm of linear one-way excursion (Xmax) with an additional 5.5 mm of travel (Xvar) before mechanical limits.

The motor uses a neodymium inside-slug magnet in a straight pole configuration, producing 1.05 T of flux density and a force factor (Bl) of 11.6 Tm. The neodymium motor is compact and lightweight — the straight pole design minimises the motor assembly depth, which is how the B&C 10CL51 achieves its 108 mm overall depth, the shallowest of any 10-inch driver in B&C’s range. The 11.6 Tm Bl driving the 30.5 g moving mass produces the 1.57% efficiency and 96 dB sensitivity that characterise this driver.

The exponential cone profile supports pistonic behaviour into the upper mid-range, enabling the 4000 Hz upper bandwidth. The cone has no waterproof treatment, keeping mass at the absolute minimum. A single spider handles suspension, paired with a double-roll surround.

At 1.3 kg with a 7 mm flange thickness — the thinnest in B&C’s entire LF range — and just 108 mm of depth, the B&C 10CL51 is the most physically compact woofer B&C manufactures. It occupies just 1 dm³ of air volume behind the baffle, leaving maximum net internal volume available inside the cabinet for the enclosure alignment.

Performance and Applications for the B&C 10CL51

The B&C 10CL51 delivers 96 dB sensitivity and 1.57% reference efficiency across a 60 Hz – 4000 Hz bandwidth. The sensitivity matches both the 10CLA64 and the 10PS26, which means the B&C 10CL51 produces the same output per watt as the larger-coil alternatives — from a driver that weighs 0.55 kg less than the CLA64 and 4.75 kg less than the ferrite PS26. The efficiency is slightly lower than the CLA64’s 1.65%, reflecting the smaller motor, but the real-world output difference is negligible.

The Thiele–Small parameters show the most flexible alignment profile in B&C’s 10-inch range alongside the CLA64. A Qts of 0.38 and an EBP of 138 Hz place the B&C 10CL51 in the sealed/vented transitional zone — builders can run it vented for extended low-frequency output or sealed for tighter, more controlled bass in smaller cabinets. B&C recommends a 32-litre (1.13 ft³) vented enclosure tuned to 58 Hz, but sealed designs in the 10–15 litre range are viable for compact column speaker modules.

The 150 W AES power rating is the trade-off for the 1.3 kg weight. The smaller 2-inch coil has less thermal mass than the CLA64’s 2.5-inch, which limits sustained power handling. For applications where the driver operates within moderate power levels — column speakers, small venue PA, distributed sound systems — 150 W AES is adequate. For high-power touring applications requiring sustained output, the CLA64 or PS26 offer more thermal headroom at the cost of additional weight.

Ideal applications for the B&C 10CL51 include:

  • Column speakers and vertical line arrays where per-driver weight is critical
  • Ultra-lightweight portable PA tops and compact two-way speakers
  • Flown speaker systems where every gram affects rigging loads
  • Multi-driver arrays where total driver weight scales with driver count
  • Distributed sound systems and small venue installations where moderate power is sufficient

Conclusion – B&C 10CL51 Woofer

The B&C 10CL51 is the absolute lightest professional woofer in B&C’s LF range. At 1.3 kg, it weighs less than many tweeters and compression drivers — yet it delivers 96 dB sensitivity, 4000 Hz bandwidth, and 5.5 mm of linear excursion from a genuine 10-inch cone. The 2-inch neodymium-powered platform strips every unnecessary gram from the design, producing a driver that practically disappears inside a cabinet.

The trade-off is the 150 W AES power handling — the smallest coil in the range has the least thermal capacity. For applications where moderate power is sufficient — column speakers, distributed sound, small venue PA — the B&C 10CL51 delivers full 96 dB sensitivity without the weight penalty of larger-coil alternatives. An eight-driver column using the B&C 10CL51 adds just 10.4 kg of driver weight — less than two 12-inch ferrite woofers.

For column speakers, ultra-portable PA, multi-driver arrays, flown systems, and any application where total driver weight is the defining constraint, the B&C 10CL51 is the 10-inch woofer that makes the lightest possible system a reality. At 1.3 kg with 96 dB sensitivity and 4000 Hz bandwidth, it proves that minimum weight doesn’t have to mean minimum performance.
