B&C 10MBX64 – Ultimate 10-Inch Mid-Bass Driver with 6000 Hz Bandwidth and Symmetrical Inductance

The B&C 10MBX64 is the most technically advanced 10-inch mid-bass driver in B&C’s range. With 100 dB sensitivity, a 65 Hz – 6000 Hz bandwidth — the widest of any driver in B&C’s entire LF lineup — a 0.39 mH voice coil inductance that is the lowest in the range, and a symmetrical inductance profile from its inside/outside wound CCAW coil, the B&C 10MBX64 delivers a level of mid-range extension, distortion performance, and crossover behaviour that no other 10-inch driver in B&C’s catalogue can match.

The MBX series is purpose-built for two-way loudspeaker systems. B&C says it directly — these drivers fill a gap in the range with high-efficiency, wide-bandwidth alternatives that incorporate lightweight neodymium motors, inside/outside wound voice coils, weatherproof cones, and symmetrical inductance profiles. The B&C 10MBX64 carries all of those features plus an aluminium demodulating ring and ventilated voice coil gap — the full complement of premium motor features in a 3.25 kg mid-bass driver.

Available in 8 and 16 Ω, the B&C 10MBX64 adapts to both single-driver and multi-driver configurations. B&C recommends a 26-litre vented enclosure tuned to 65 Hz — compact enough for the tightest two-way cabinet designs while delivering punchy, well-defined output from the upper bass through the upper mid-range.

Design and Construction of the B&C 10MBX64

The B&C 10MBX64 uses a 64 mm (2.5-inch) inside/outside wound copper-clad aluminium wire voice coil on a glass fibre former. The inside/outside winding is the key engineering detail — the coil is wound on both sides of the former rather than just the outside, creating a symmetrical inductance profile that dramatically reduces inductance modulation as the coil moves through the magnetic gap. This means the driver’s impedance and frequency response behaviour remain more consistent across the excursion range — a measurable advantage for crossover accuracy and distortion performance that conventional single-sided windings can’t deliver.

The 12 mm winding depth operating in an 8 mm magnetic gap yields 4 mm of linear one-way excursion (Xmax) with an additional 5.5 mm of travel (Xvar) before mechanical limits. The 32 g moving mass is the lightest of any mid-bass driver in B&C’s range, and it’s the foundation of the 3.2% reference efficiency and 100 dB sensitivity.

The motor uses a neodymium inside-slug magnet in a T-pole configuration, producing 1.25 T of flux density and a force factor (Bl) of 16.9 Tm. An aluminium demodulating ring reduces flux modulation in the voice coil gap, and a ventilated voice coil gap reduces power compression during sustained use. The combination of the demodulating ring, symmetrical inductance profile, and ventilated gap makes the B&C 10MBX64 one of the lowest-distortion mid-bass drivers available at any price.

The resulting 0.39 mH voice coil inductance is the lowest of any driver in B&C’s LF range — less than a quarter of most conventional woofers. Low inductance means the impedance curve stays flat well beyond the operating range, which translates to smoother, more predictable frequency response through the crossover region and into the 6000 Hz upper bandwidth. The radial cone features a waterproof impregnated treatment — the cone material itself is impregnated with waterproofing rather than having a surface coating applied, providing weather resistance without adding cone mass. At 3.25 kg and 125 mm deep, the B&C 10MBX64 is compact and light enough for portable two-way systems.

Performance and Applications for the B&C 10MBX64

The B&C 10MBX64 delivers 100 dB sensitivity and 3.2% reference efficiency across a 65 Hz – 6000 Hz bandwidth. The 6000 Hz upper limit is the widest bandwidth of any driver in B&C’s entire LF range — it means the B&C 10MBX64 operates usefully into the upper mid-range where vocal presence, guitar bite, and percussive attack live. In a two-way system, you can cross over to a tweeter or small compression driver at 3–5 kHz with substantial overlap, or push the crossover even higher in applications where the woofer section needs to cover as much of the spectrum as possible.

The Thiele–Small parameters define a driver built for vented and horn-loaded enclosures. A Qts of 0.26 and an EBP of 241 Hz confirm that the B&C 10MBX64 delivers its best performance in tuned enclosures where the low Qts produces tight, fast, well-controlled mid-bass response. B&C recommends a 26-litre (0.92 ft³) vented enclosure tuned to 65 Hz — compact and practical for portable two-way cabinets and stage monitors.

The symmetrical inductance profile is where the B&C 10MBX64 distinguishes itself technically from every other 10-inch driver in the range. In conventional drivers, voice coil inductance changes as the coil moves in and out of the gap — this modulation generates intermodulation distortion and causes the frequency response to shift with excursion. The inside/outside wound coil on the B&C 10MBX64 minimises this effect, maintaining more consistent impedance and response behaviour regardless of coil position. For system designers obsessed with linearity, this is the feature that justifies the MBX designation.

Ideal applications for the B&C 10MBX64 include:

  • Two-way loudspeaker systems with crossover points from 3–5 kHz
  • Dedicated mid-bass sections in three-way and four-way professional systems
  • Compact stage monitors and wedges requiring wide bandwidth with low distortion
  • Horn-loaded mid-bass applications exploiting the low Qts and high EBP
  • Multi-driver configurations using the 16 Ω variant for impedance management

Conclusion – B&C 10MBX64 Mid-Bass Driver

The B&C 10MBX64 is the most technically refined mid-bass driver in B&C’s 10-inch range. The inside/outside wound coil, symmetrical inductance profile, 0.39 mH Le, demodulating ring, and ventilated gap collectively produce the lowest distortion performance of any 10-inch mid-bass driver B&C offers — and the 6000 Hz bandwidth gives it upper-frequency reach that nothing else in the LF range can match. Every feature on this driver exists to minimise non-linearity and extend usable bandwidth.

The 100 dB sensitivity at 3.2% efficiency from 32 g of moving mass means the B&C 10MBX64 doesn’t sacrifice output for its technical refinements — it delivers the same sensitivity as the ferrite 10MD26 while adding the demod ring, ventilated gap, symmetrical inductance, and 2000 Hz of additional upper bandwidth that the MD26 doesn’t have. At 3.25 kg versus the MD26’s 7.25 kg, the weight comparison isn’t even close.

For two-way speaker systems, dedicated mid-bass sections, compact stage monitors, and any application where a 10-inch driver needs to deliver 100 dB sensitivity from 65 Hz to 6000 Hz with the lowest distortion and flattest impedance behaviour possible, the B&C 10MBX64 is the 10-inch mid-bass driver that defines what the MBX platform was built to do. It’s B&C’s most complete 10-inch transducer — period.
