B&C 14DS88 – Powerful 14-Inch DS Series Woofer with Extreme Motor Authority
The B&C 14DS88 is the newest addition to B&C’s 14-inch lineup and the first driver in this format to carry the DS Series four-layer voice coil architecture. With a 36.9 Tm force factor from a 3.5-inch coil, 11 mm of linear excursion, 700 W AES power handling, and 97.3 dB sensitivity, the B&C 14DS88 delivers a level of motor authority and displacement capability that redefines what a 14-inch woofer can do. That 36.9 Tm Bl is nearly double the NDL88’s 19.9 Tm — from the same coil diameter.
The DS Series philosophy is straightforward: use a four-layer copper-clad aluminium wire voice coil to concentrate more energy in the magnetic gap while generating less heat than conventional two-layer designs. The deeper 27.5 mm winding packs more turns into the gap, producing the extreme force factor that drives the 170 g moving mass with absolute authority. The result is a driver that combines high sensitivity with genuine long-throw excursion — a combination that conventional two-layer coils struggle to achieve.
With a Qts of 0.18 and an EBP of 232 Hz, the B&C 14DS88 is designed exclusively for vented and horn-loaded enclosures where its extreme motor damping and efficiency translate into tight, controlled, high-output bass. At 5.9 kg, it keeps the neodymium weight advantage while delivering performance that competes with much larger format drivers.
Design and Construction of the B&C 14DS88
The B&C 14DS88 uses an 88 mm (3.5-inch) four-layer copper-clad aluminium wire voice coil wound on a glass fibre former. The four-layer winding geometry is the defining feature of the DS Series — it packs substantially more conductor into the magnetic gap than a standard two-layer coil of the same diameter, concentrating energy where it matters most. The 27.5 mm winding depth operating in an 11 mm magnetic gap yields 11 mm of linear one-way excursion (Xmax) with an additional 10.8 mm of travel (Xvar) before mechanical limits.
The 11 mm Xmax is the highest of any 14-inch driver in B&C’s range, and the 27.5 mm winding depth is the deepest — both direct consequences of the four-layer coil architecture. For comparison, the NDL88 achieves 8 mm Xmax from a 21 mm winding depth. The B&C 14DS88’s deeper winding keeps more coil inside the gap through longer excursion strokes, maintaining consistent force output where conventional drivers begin to lose control.
The motor uses a neodymium inside-slug magnet in a T-pole configuration, producing 1.05 T of flux density and a force factor (Bl) of 36.9 Tm — an extraordinary figure for a 3.5-inch coil. An aluminium demodulating ring reduces flux modulation in the voice coil gap, keeping distortion controlled as the driver operates at high excursion and power levels. A ventilated voice coil gap reduces power compression during sustained use.
The cone profile is curvilinear — a geometry that differs from both the exponential cones on B&C’s wideband woofers and the radial cones on their sub-class drivers. The curvilinear profile is optimised for controlled piston behaviour through the B&C 14DS88’s 45–1200 Hz operating range. Suspension is handled by a double silicone spider with optimised compliance and a triple-roll surround. WP waterproof treatment on the front side provides moisture resistance. At 5.9 kg, 360 mm overall diameter, and 174.4 mm depth, the B&C 14DS88 is the heaviest and deepest 14-inch driver in B&C’s range — the four-layer coil assembly and stronger motor account for the added mass.
Performance and Applications for the B&C 14DS88
The B&C 14DS88 delivers 97.3 dB sensitivity and 2.4% reference efficiency across a 45 Hz – 1200 Hz bandwidth. Those numbers tell a different story from the NDL88’s 99 dB / 2.9% — the DS88 trades peak sensitivity for dramatically more motor force and excursion. But the trade-off is deceptive: at full rated power, the B&C 14DS88’s combination of 97.3 dB sensitivity and 700 W AES produces higher peak output than the NDL88’s 99 dB at 500 W — and the 11 mm Xmax means it sustains that output at excursion levels the NDL88 can’t reach.
The Thiele–Small parameters are the most extreme of any 14-inch driver B&C makes. A Qts of 0.18 and an EBP of 232 Hz define a driver with massive electromagnetic damping — the 36.9 Tm motor has an iron grip on the 170 g cone at all times. This driver does not belong in a sealed enclosure. It demands a vented or horn-loaded design where the low Qts produces tight, fast, well-controlled bass response. Builders should model the T/S parameters in simulation software to optimise their enclosure alignment — expect optimal results in the 50–80 litre range depending on target tuning frequency.
The 1200 Hz upper bandwidth is narrower than the NDL88’s 3000 Hz, which makes the B&C 14DS88 a bass and low-mid driver rather than a wideband two-way woofer. In systems where the woofer is crossed over at 800–1200 Hz to a mid-range driver or compression driver, this is not a limitation — it’s a design match. The curvilinear cone is optimised for controlled output in exactly this range.
Ideal applications for the B&C 14DS88 include:
- High-output vented bass cabinets where motor authority and excursion are priorities
- Horn-loaded mid-bass bins exploiting the extremely low Qts and high EBP
- Three-way systems where the 14-inch handles dedicated bass duties below 1200 Hz
- Compact high-power line array bass sections
- Builds where the 14-inch format’s size advantage is needed with 15-inch-class displacement

Conclusion – B&C 14DS88 Woofer
The B&C 14DS88 is the most motor-dominant 14-inch driver B&C has ever made. The 36.9 Tm force factor from a 3.5-inch four-layer CCAW coil is nearly double what the NDL88 achieves from the same coil diameter — and the 11 mm Xmax represents a 37% increase in linear excursion. The DS Series architecture doesn’t just improve on the NDL88; it fundamentally changes what a 14-inch woofer is capable of in terms of displacement and motor control.
The Qts of 0.18 and EBP of 232 Hz make the B&C 14DS88 a specialist — it’s built for vented and horn-loaded enclosures where extreme motor damping translates into tight, fast, authoritative bass. This isn’t a do-everything wideband woofer. It’s a dedicated bass driver that hits harder, reaches deeper, and stays more controlled than any other 14-inch driver in B&C’s range.
For high-output bass cabinets, horn-loaded designs, three-way systems, and any application where a 14-inch driver needs to deliver the displacement and motor authority of a larger format, the B&C 14DS88 is the DS Series driver that proves the four-layer coil architecture works just as well at 14 inches as it does at 18 and 19. It’s B&C’s most capable 14-inch woofer — and it’s not close.
