B&C 14NDL88 – Outstanding 14-Inch Neodymium Woofer Balanced for Modern System Design

The B&C 14NDL88 is the higher-power member of B&C’s 14-inch neodymium woofer lineup — stepping up from the NDL76’s 3-inch coil to a 3.5-inch aluminium voice coil with a double silicone spider, 700 W AES power handling, and 1400 W continuous program power. At 99 dB sensitivity, 2.9% reference efficiency, and 5.3 kg, the B&C 14NDL88 delivers the balanced performance that modern two-way systems demand from a 14-inch frame that fits where 15-inch drivers can’t.

The NDL88 series philosophy is consistent across B&C’s range: place a neodymium magnet inside the 88 mm voice coil to reduce the steel needed in the motor structure, saving both cost and weight. The result is a driver that matches the NDL76’s 99 dB sensitivity while adding 40% more power handling, a double spider for better excursion control, and the thermal headroom of a larger coil — all for less than a kilogram of added weight.

Available in 4, 8, and 16 Ω variants — a range of impedance options that no other driver in B&C’s 14-inch lineup offers — the B&C 14NDL88 adapts to virtually any system architecture. The 16 Ω variant is particularly useful for series-parallel wiring in multi-driver line arrays, while the 8 Ω suits dual-driver parallel configurations and the 4 Ω works for single-driver applications.

Design and Construction of the B&C 14NDL88

The B&C 14NDL88 uses an 88 mm (3.5-inch) aluminium voice coil wound on a glass fibre former. The larger coil diameter compared to the NDL76’s 76 mm provides more surface area for heat dissipation, directly supporting the 40% increase in power handling (700 W vs 500 W AES). The 21 mm winding depth operating in a 10 mm magnetic gap yields 8 mm of linear one-way excursion (Xmax) with an additional 9.5 mm of travel (Xvar) before mechanical limits — matching the NDL76’s excursion figures exactly.

The motor uses a neodymium inside-slug magnet in a T-pole configuration, producing 1.05 T of flux density and a force factor (Bl) of 19.9 Tm. An aluminium demodulating ring reduces flux modulation in the voice coil gap, keeping harmonic and intermodulation distortion low as power and excursion increase. The 86 g moving mass — virtually identical to the NDL76’s 85 g — means the B&C 14NDL88 achieves its higher power handling without sacrificing the light cone assembly that makes 99 dB sensitivity possible.

A ventilated voice coil gap allows air circulation around the coil, reducing power compression during sustained high-power use. The key structural upgrade over the NDL76 is the double silicone spider — replacing the NDL76’s single spider with a dual-spider system provides more progressive stiffness and better excursion control, which is why the B&C 14NDL88 handles 700 W AES with confidence. The exponential cone profile supports pistonic behaviour into the upper frequencies, enabling the 3000 Hz upper bandwidth.

WP waterproof treatment on the front side of the cone provides moisture resistance. At 5.3 kg and 167 mm deep, the B&C 14NDL88 adds 0.95 kg and 6 mm of depth over the NDL76 — the double spider and larger coil assembly account for the modest increase. The 359 mm overall diameter and 323 mm baffle cutout match the NDL76 exactly, making the two physically interchangeable in existing cabinets.

Performance and Applications for the B&C 14NDL88

The B&C 14NDL88 delivers 99 dB sensitivity and 2.9% reference efficiency across a 45 Hz – 3000 Hz bandwidth. The 2.9% efficiency slightly edges the NDL76’s 2.7%, achieved through the marginally stronger 19.9 Tm Bl (vs 19 Tm) at essentially the same moving mass. The 3000 Hz upper limit matches the NDL76 and B&C’s best 15-inch wideband woofers, making crossover to a compression driver at 1.5–2.5 kHz straightforward and well-behaved.

The Thiele–Small parameters are nearly identical to the NDL76. A Qts of 0.30 and an EBP of 145 Hz place the B&C 14NDL88 in vented and horn-loaded territory, and B&C recommends the same 75-litre (2.65 ft³) vented enclosure tuned to 53 Hz. That shared enclosure recommendation makes the NDL88 a direct upgrade path from the NDL76 — same cabinet, more power handling, better excursion control, no redesign required.

The three-impedance availability is a genuine system design advantage. The 16 Ω variant allows series-parallel wiring of four drivers to present a 16 Ω load, or two in parallel for 8 Ω — configurations commonly used in multi-element line arrays where impedance management across many drivers is critical. No other B&C 14-inch driver offers this flexibility, and it’s rare in the market at any driver size.

Ideal applications for the B&C 14NDL88 include:

  • Two-way active and passive speaker systems with compression driver HF
  • Line array modules where the 14-inch format optimises element spacing and weight
  • Compact stage monitors and wedges
  • Multi-driver configurations exploiting the 4/8/16 Ω impedance range
  • Upgrades from 14NDL76 installations needing more power handling without cabinet changes

Conclusion – B&C 14NDL88 Woofer

The B&C 14NDL88 takes everything the 14NDL76 does well — 99 dB sensitivity, 3000 Hz bandwidth, demod ring, compact 14-inch frame — and adds the power handling and excursion control that the double spider and larger coil provide. At 700 W AES, it handles 40% more power than the NDL76 while matching the same 75-litre enclosure recommendation, making it a direct drop-in upgrade for builders who need more thermal headroom without redesigning their cabinet.

The three-impedance availability is the B&C 14NDL88’s secret weapon for system designers. The 16 Ω variant opens up series-parallel configurations that are essential for multi-element line arrays, while the 4 Ω and 8 Ω options cover every standard wiring topology. That kind of impedance flexibility from a single driver model simplifies inventory, specification, and system design across an entire product range.

For two-way tops, line arrays, compact monitors, and any application where the 14-inch format’s size advantage matters, the B&C 14NDL88 is the balanced, full-featured choice that does more with less — exactly as B&C intended. It’s the 14-inch neo woofer that handles serious power while staying light, efficient, and wideband enough for the most demanding modern system designs.
