B&C 15CLA76 – Best Ultralight 15-Inch Neodymium Woofer with Low-Distortion Motor

The B&C 15CLA76 is the refined evolution of B&C’s ultralight CL76 platform — same 3.8 kg weight, same frame, but with targeted upgrades that make it a meaningfully better driver. A copper-clad aluminium voice coil replaces the CL76’s pure copper winding, an aluminium demodulating ring has been added to the motor, flux density increases to 1.2 T, and the inductance drops to a remarkably low 0.5 mH. The result is 99 dB sensitivity with cleaner output, smoother high-frequency response, and better transient behaviour than the driver it evolves from.

B&C positions the B&C 15CLA76 as price-competitive with ferrite designs offering similar performance — which makes it one of the most compelling value propositions in the professional 15-inch woofer market. You get neodymium weight savings, a demodulating ring for low distortion, a ventilated gap for reduced power compression, and 99 dB sensitivity at a price point that doesn’t demand a neodymium premium.

With a 40 Hz – 3000 Hz bandwidth and a Qts of 0.30, the B&C 15CLA76 is built for modern two-way and three-way speaker systems, line arrays, and any application where weight, bandwidth, and clean output all matter. At 3.8 kg, it remains tied with the CL76 as the lightest 15-inch professional driver in B&C’s range.

Design and Construction of the B&C 15CLA76

The B&C 15CLA76 uses a 76 mm (3-inch) aluminium voice coil wound on a glass fibre former. The switch from the CL76’s copper winding to copper-clad aluminium (CCAW) is a deliberate engineering choice — the lighter aluminium coil reduces moving mass while the copper cladding maintains good electrical conductivity and thermal performance. The 16 mm winding depth operating in an 11 mm magnetic gap yields 5.5 mm of linear one-way excursion (Xmax) with an additional 7.5 mm of travel (Xvar) before mechanical limits.

The motor uses a neodymium inside-slug magnet in a straight pole configuration, producing 1.2 T of flux density — a step up from the CL76’s 1.15 T — and a force factor (Bl) of 19.8 Tm. An aluminium demodulating ring in the motor assembly is the headline upgrade over the CL76. This ring reduces flux modulation in the voice coil gap, directly lowering harmonic and intermodulation distortion under load. The CL76 doesn’t have one, which is why the B&C 15CLA76 produces noticeably cleaner output as power and excursion increase.

The demodulating ring also contributes to the B&C 15CLA76’s exceptionally low voice coil inductance of 0.5 mH — less than half the CL76 8 Ω’s 1.3 mH. Low inductance means less impedance rise at higher frequencies, which translates to smoother, more extended high-frequency response and better transient behaviour throughout the operating range. This is a measurable advantage in two-way systems where the woofer needs to operate cleanly up to and through the crossover region.

A ventilated voice coil gap reduces power compression during sustained use. The exponential cone profile supports pistonic behaviour into the upper frequencies, enabling the 3000 Hz upper bandwidth. WP waterproof treatment on the front side provides moisture resistance. A single spider handles suspension, and the triple-roll surround provides controlled compliance. At 3.8 kg and 171 mm deep, the B&C 15CLA76 shares the CL76’s frame dimensions exactly — the two are physically interchangeable.

Performance and Applications for the B&C 15CLA76

The B&C 15CLA76 delivers 99 dB sensitivity and 3.5% reference efficiency across a 40 Hz – 3000 Hz bandwidth. That 99 dB figure splits the difference between the CL76 8 Ω’s 98.5 dB and the ferrite PLB76’s 100 dB — while weighing less than half of either ferrite option and producing substantially lower distortion than the CL76 thanks to the demodulating ring.

The Thiele–Small parameters show a well-balanced alignment profile. A Qts of 0.30 and an EBP of 129 Hz place the B&C 15CLA76 firmly in vented territory with enough flexibility for builders to explore different tuning strategies. B&C recommends a 100-litre (3.53 ft³) vented enclosure tuned to 50 Hz — the same cabinet volume as the CL76, making upgrades between the two straightforward. The 40 Hz Fs is slightly lower than the CL76’s 42 Hz, giving the CLA76 marginally more low-end reach.

The 0.5 mH inductance deserves special attention. In a two-way system, the woofer’s impedance rise at higher frequencies affects how it interacts with the crossover network and how cleanly it hands off to the compression driver. The B&C 15CLA76’s extremely low inductance keeps the impedance curve flat well into the crossover region, making passive crossover design more predictable and active crossover behaviour more consistent. For system designers working on two-way tops, this is a tangible engineering advantage.

Ideal applications for the B&C 15CLA76 include:

  • Two-way active and passive speaker systems where crossover behaviour matters
  • Line array modules where per-box weight directly affects rigging loads
  • Lightweight portable PA tops and column speakers
  • Multi-driver configurations using 8 Ω parallel pairs for 4 Ω loading
  • Upgrades from CL76 installations where lower distortion and improved HF response are desired

Conclusion – B&C 15CLA76 Woofer

The B&C 15CLA76 is the CL76 done right for modern system design. Every upgrade targets a real performance gain — the demodulating ring lowers distortion, the CCAW coil improves sensitivity and HF response, the higher flux density strengthens motor authority, and the 0.5 mH inductance keeps the impedance curve clean through the crossover region. All of this at the same 3.8 kg weight and in the same frame as the CL76 it replaces.

At 99 dB sensitivity with a demodulating ring, 3.8 kg weight, and a price point that B&C says competes with ferrite designs, the B&C 15CLA76 is arguably the best value proposition in B&C’s 15-inch range. You’re getting neodymium weight, premium motor features, and near-100 dB sensitivity for what ferrite alternatives cost — and those ferrite alternatives weigh two to three times as much.

For line arrays, two-way tops, column speakers, and any build where the driver needs to be light, efficient, wideband, and clean, the B&C 15CLA76 is the 15-inch woofer that checks every box. It’s the ultralight neo woofer that B&C perfected on the second pass.
