B&C 15FW88 – Precision 15-Inch Woofer Engineered for Modern Two-Way Systems

The B&C 15FW88 is part of B&C’s FW88 series — a newer generation of ferrite woofers built around a 3.5-inch aluminium voice coil, premium motor features, and an exceptionally wide 49 Hz – 3000 Hz bandwidth. With 98 dB sensitivity, 700 W AES power handling, and a feature set that includes an aluminium demodulating ring and ventilated voice coil gap, the B&C 15FW88 delivers a level of performance and refinement that punches well above what its ferrite motor and modest price point might suggest.

The design philosophy behind the FW88 series is balance. Where B&C’s PLB-series drivers chase maximum sensitivity at the expense of excursion and power handling, the B&C 15FW88 takes a more measured approach — strong efficiency combined with usable excursion, genuine power handling, low distortion, and a bandwidth wide enough to meet almost any compression driver in a two-way configuration without straining.

At 9 kg with a Qts of 0.43, this driver offers the most flexible enclosure alignment in B&C’s 15-inch range. Sealed, vented, or horn-loaded — the B&C 15FW88 works well in all three, making it a genuinely versatile platform for builders designing everything from compact two-way tops to full-range portable PA cabinets.

Design and Construction of the B&C 15FW88

The B&C 15FW88 uses an 88 mm (3.5-inch) aluminium voice coil wound on a glass fibre former. The 3.5-inch diameter is a deliberate choice — it sits between the 3-inch coils found on B&C’s budget 15s and the 4-inch coils on the heavier-duty models, giving you a compact motor assembly that still handles serious power. The 21.5 mm winding depth operating in an 11 mm magnetic gap yields 8 mm of linear one-way excursion (Xmax) with an additional 9.5 mm of travel (Xvar) before mechanical limits.

The motor runs a high-flux ferrite magnet in a T-pole configuration, producing 1.04 T of flux density and a force factor (Bl) of 19.27 Tm. An aluminium demodulating ring in the motor assembly reduces flux modulation in the voice coil gap, directly lowering harmonic and intermodulation distortion as power and excursion increase. This is a premium feature typically found on B&C’s more expensive neodymium drivers — having it on a ferrite woofer at this price point is a significant value add.

A ventilated voice coil gap allows air to circulate around the coil during operation, reducing power compression so the B&C 15FW88 maintains its rated output during sustained use. Suspension is handled by a double silicone spider with optimised compliance and a triple-roll surround — a dual-spider setup that provides the progressive stiffness needed for controlled excursion across the full operating range.

The exponential cone profile supports pistonic behaviour well into the upper frequencies, which is how the B&C 15FW88 achieves its remarkable 3000 Hz upper limit. WP waterproof treatment is applied to the front side of the cone for moisture resistance. At 9 kg and 174 mm deep, the driver is compact and light enough for portable applications while remaining robust enough for permanent install use.

Performance and Applications for the B&C 15FW88

The B&C 15FW88 delivers 98 dB sensitivity and 2.63% reference efficiency across an exceptionally wide 49 Hz – 3000 Hz bandwidth. That 3000 Hz upper limit is the standout specification here — it means you can cross this driver over to a compression driver at 1.5–2.5 kHz with comfortable overlap, simplifying system design and ensuring a smooth transition between the LF and HF sections of a two-way system.

The Thiele–Small parameters reveal the most versatile alignment profile in B&C’s 15-inch range. A Qts of 0.43 and an EBP of 109 Hz place the B&C 15FW88 right on the sealed/vented boundary — giving builders genuine freedom to choose enclosure topology based on their specific application rather than being locked into one design. B&C recommends a 130-litre (4.59 ft³) vented enclosure tuned to 45 Hz, but sealed designs in the 60–80 litre range will also work well for tighter, more controlled mid-bass response in compact two-way tops.

Compared to the 15PLB76, the B&C 15FW88 trades peak sensitivity (98 dB vs 100 dB) for significantly better power handling (700 W vs 400 W AES), more excursion (8 mm vs 5 mm Xmax), lower distortion through the demodulating ring, and a bandwidth that extends a full octave higher (3000 Hz vs 2000 Hz). It’s the more complete driver for modern system designs where you need a single transducer to handle both bass and mid-range duties in a two-way configuration.

Ideal applications for the B&C 15FW88 include:

  • Two-way active and passive speaker systems with a compression driver HF section
  • Compact vented or sealed tops for portable PA and live sound reinforcement
  • Three-way systems where the 15-inch handles bass and low-mid duties
  • Wedge monitors requiring wide bandwidth and controlled output
  • DIY builds where enclosure flexibility and crossover simplicity are priorities

Conclusion – B&C 15FW88 Woofer

The B&C 15FW88 represents a new generation of B&C ferrite woofer — one that prioritises balance over any single specification. It doesn’t chase the extreme sensitivity of the PLB76, and it doesn’t try to be a sub-bass displacement driver. Instead, it delivers strong efficiency, genuine power handling, low distortion, and a 3000 Hz bandwidth that makes two-way system design straightforward and effective.

The inclusion of a demodulating ring and ventilated gap on a ferrite woofer at this price point makes the B&C 15FW88 a compelling value proposition. You’re getting motor features from B&C’s premium range in a driver that costs a fraction of the neodymium alternatives — and the Qts of 0.43 gives you enclosure flexibility that most 15-inch woofers in this class can’t match.

For builders designing two-way tops, compact PA systems, wedge monitors, or any application where a single 15-inch driver needs to cover bass through the low-mids with clean, controlled output, the B&C 15FW88 does more with less. That’s not marketing — it’s what the specs deliver.
