B&C 15NDL88 – Precision 15-Inch Neodymium Woofer Balanced for Modern Two-Way Systems

The B&C 15NDL88 is B&C’s answer for builders who want a balanced, full-featured neodymium 15-inch woofer at a weight and price point that makes sense for real-world systems. At 5.7 kg with 99 dB sensitivity, a 45 Hz – 3000 Hz bandwidth, and a comprehensive feature set including a demodulating ring, ventilated gap, and double silicone spider, the B&C 15NDL88 delivers the kind of all-round performance that modern two-way and three-way speaker systems demand.

The NDL88 series uses a 3.5-inch aluminium voice coil sitting inside a neodymium motor — a design that reduces the steel needed in the motor structure, saving both cost and weight. B&C positions this series as doing more with less, and the specs back that up: 700 W AES power handling, 8 mm of linear excursion, 3000 Hz of usable bandwidth, and premium motor features — all from a driver that weighs under 6 kg.

With a Qts of 0.34 and an EBP of 125 Hz, the B&C 15NDL88 offers genuine enclosure flexibility. It works well in vented cabinets, performs in horn-loaded designs, and can even be considered for sealed alignments where tighter bass response is preferred. That versatility, combined with the 3000 Hz upper limit, makes it one of the most flexible 15-inch woofers in B&C’s neodymium range.

Design and Construction of the B&C 15NDL88

The B&C 15NDL88 uses an 88 mm (3.5-inch) aluminium voice coil wound on a glass fibre former. The 3.5-inch coil diameter sits between the 76 mm coils found on B&C’s lighter woofers and the 100 mm coils on the heavier sub-class drivers, striking a balance between thermal mass and moving assembly weight. The 21 mm winding depth operating in a 10 mm magnetic gap yields 8 mm of linear one-way excursion (Xmax) with an additional 10 mm of travel (Xvar) before mechanical limits.

The motor uses a neodymium inside-slug magnet in a T-pole configuration, producing 1.05 T of flux density and a force factor (Bl) of 20.1 Tm. An aluminium demodulating ring in the motor assembly reduces flux modulation in the voice coil gap, directly lowering harmonic and intermodulation distortion as power and excursion increase. This is the same premium motor feature found on B&C’s most expensive drivers — having it on a mid-weight neodymium woofer at this price point makes the B&C 15NDL88 a strong value proposition.

A ventilated voice coil gap allows air circulation around the coil, reducing power compression during sustained high-power use. Suspension is handled by a double silicone spider with optimised compliance and a triple-roll surround — the dual-spider setup provides controlled, progressive stiffness that supports the 700 W AES power rating and keeps excursion behaviour consistent across the operating range.

The exponential cone profile supports pistonic behaviour well into the upper frequencies, enabling the B&C 15NDL88’s 3000 Hz upper bandwidth. WP waterproof treatment on the front side provides moisture resistance. At 5.7 kg and 177 mm deep, the B&C 15NDL88 is compact and light enough for portable applications while carrying enough motor and thermal mass to handle serious sustained power.

Performance and Applications for the B&C 15NDL88

The B&C 15NDL88 delivers 99 dB sensitivity and 3.1% reference efficiency across a 45 Hz – 3000 Hz bandwidth. The 3000 Hz upper limit is the specification that defines this driver’s role — it means you can cross over to a compression driver at 1.5–2.5 kHz with comfortable overlap, or push the crossover point higher in a two-way system where the woofer needs to handle more of the mid-range. The 102 g moving mass and exponential cone keep the output coherent and controlled well into those upper frequencies.

The Thiele–Small parameters reveal the most versatile alignment profile in B&C’s neodymium 15-inch woofer range. A Qts of 0.34 and an EBP of 125 Hz place the B&C 15NDL88 in a sweet spot between the ultra-low Qts drivers that demand vented or horn loading and the higher Qts drivers that work in sealed boxes. B&C recommends a 125-litre (4.41 ft³) vented enclosure tuned to 45 Hz, but builders can explore smaller sealed alignments for tighter, more controlled response in compact two-way tops.

Compared to the ferrite 15FW88 — which shares the same 88 mm coil diameter and 3000 Hz bandwidth philosophy — the B&C 15NDL88 saves 3.3 kg (5.7 kg vs 9 kg), gains 1 dB of sensitivity (99 vs 98 dB), and matches the same power handling and excursion specs. It also adds a demodulating ring that the FW88 already includes. For builders upgrading from ferrite to neodymium, the NDL88 is the direct equivalent with a 37% weight reduction and better output per watt.

Ideal applications for the B&C 15NDL88 include:

  • Two-way active and passive speaker systems with compression driver HF
  • Lightweight portable PA tops and stage monitors
  • Line array modules where weight, bandwidth, and power handling all matter
  • Three-way systems where the 15-inch handles bass and low-mid duties
  • Multi-driver configurations using 8 Ω parallel pairs for 4 Ω loading

Conclusion – B&C 15NDL88 Woofer

The B&C 15NDL88 occupies the sweet spot in B&C’s neodymium 15-inch range. It doesn’t chase the extreme sensitivity of the NW76, and it doesn’t compete on raw power handling with the 100 mm coil drivers. Instead, it delivers the balanced combination of sensitivity, bandwidth, power handling, excursion, and distortion performance that modern two-way speaker systems actually need — all in a 5.7 kg package that weighs 37% less than its ferrite FW88 counterpart.

The 3000 Hz bandwidth is the spec that makes the B&C 15NDL88 a two-way system designer’s best friend. Combined with the demodulating ring for low distortion through the crossover region and the Qts of 0.34 that provides enclosure flexibility, this driver simplifies system design without compromising output quality. It meets almost any compression driver for a clean, well-behaved two-way handoff.

For lightweight two-way tops, portable PA systems, stage monitors, and line arrays where the woofer needs to do it all — punch, extend, cross over cleanly, and stay light — the B&C 15NDL88 is the neodymium 15-inch woofer that does more with less. Every feature earns its place, nothing is wasted, and the 5.7 kg weight means your backs and your budgets both come out ahead.
