B&C 18PS100 – Versatile 18-Inch Subwoofer Driver Built for Efficient Bass Reproduction

The B&C 18PS100 in its 8 Ω configuration is B&C’s efficiency-focused 18-inch subwoofer driver for builders who want clean, controlled bass output without the weight or cost of a neodymium long-throw design. With 95.5 dB sensitivity, a featherweight 202 g moving mass, and a ferrite motor that punches above its price class, this driver turns modest amplifier power into real acoustic output.

The 8 Ω impedance variant gives you a key advantage over its 4 Ω sibling — the ability to wire two drivers in parallel to present a 4 Ω load to a single amplifier channel. That makes the B&C 18PS100 a natural choice for dual-driver sub cabinets where you want to double your cone area and displacement without overloading your amp.

At just 10.2 kg per driver, the B&C 18PS100 keeps your cabinet light enough to carry without a crew. For portable PA rigs, DJ subs, and cost-effective DIY builds, this is the kind of driver that earns its place through honest, reliable performance rather than headline specifications.

Design and Construction of the B&C 18PS100

The B&C 18PS100 uses a 100 mm (4-inch) copper voice coil wound on a glass fibre former. The 8 Ω version features a 21 mm winding depth — slightly deeper than the 4 Ω variant’s 19 mm — operating in the same 10.5 mm magnetic gap. That deeper winding yields 8 mm of linear one-way excursion (Xmax) with an additional 8 mm of travel (Xvar) before mechanical limits.

The motor runs a ferrite magnet in a T-pole configuration, producing 1.05 T of flux density and a force factor (Bl) of 22.5 Tm. That Bl figure is notably higher than the 4 Ω version’s 20 Tm, which — combined with the lighter 202 g moving mass — explains the 8 Ω variant’s higher sensitivity and efficiency. The motor has strong control over the cone assembly, delivering tight transient response and well-damped behaviour across the operating range.

Suspension is handled by a double silicone spider with optimised compliance, paired with a triple-roll surround. The radial cone features TWP waterproof treatment on both sides for moisture resistance in outdoor and high-humidity environments.

The physical frame is identical to the 4 Ω version — same 460 mm overall diameter, same 197 mm depth, same 10.2 kg net weight. If you’ve already designed a cabinet around the 4 Ω B&C 18PS100, the 8 Ω version drops straight in with no baffle or cutout changes required.

Performance and Applications for the B&C 18PS100

The B&C 18PS100 (8 Ω) covers a 30 Hz – 1000 Hz frequency range with 95.5 dB sensitivity and 1.6% reference efficiency. That 1.5 dB sensitivity gain over the 4 Ω version is meaningful in practice — you’re getting noticeably more output per watt, which matters when you’re running the driver from a mid-range amplifier rather than a touring-grade powerhouse.

The Thiele–Small parameters are very close to the 4 Ω model. A Qts of 0.39 and an EBP of 73 Hz place the B&C 18PS100 right on the sealed/vented boundary — one of the most flexible alignment zones for an 18-inch sub driver. You can run it sealed for tighter, more controlled bass in a smaller cabinet, or vented for extended low-frequency reach. B&C recommends a 250-litre (8.83 ft³) vented enclosure tuned to 29 Hz for the full vented alignment.

The real advantage of the 8 Ω impedance shows up in multi-driver configurations. Two B&C 18PS100 drivers wired in parallel present a 4 Ω load — a comfortable match for most professional amplifier channels. You double your radiating area and displacement capability while keeping impedance within the amplifier’s optimal operating range. For dual-18 sub cabinets, this is the logical impedance choice.

Ideal applications for the B&C 18PS100 include:

  • Dual-driver subwoofer cabinets with parallel wiring to a single amp channel
  • Portable PA and DJ subwoofer builds where weight and cost matter
  • Sealed or vented enclosure designs for small to mid-sized venues
  • Budget-friendly DIY subwoofer projects for live sound reinforcement
  • Replacement driver for existing 18-inch cabinets requiring an 8 Ω transducer

Conclusion – B&C 18PS100 Subwoofer Driver

The B&C 18PS100 in 8 Ω is the smarter pick when you’re designing multi-driver sub cabinets or need the impedance headroom that an 8 Ω load provides. It shares the same proven ferrite platform and lightweight frame as the 4 Ω version, but gains a meaningful edge in sensitivity and efficiency thanks to the lighter moving mass and stronger force factor — 95.5 dB and 1.6% versus 94 dB and 1.46% on the 4 Ω model.

The enclosure flexibility remains a standout feature. With a Qts of 0.39, you’re not locked into a single alignment — sealed, vented, and even bandpass designs are all viable depending on your application. That makes the B&C 18PS100 a genuinely versatile platform for builders who want to experiment or need one driver to serve across different cabinet designs.

For budget-conscious PA builds, dual-18 sub cabinets, and portable rigs where weight and value matter as much as output, the B&C 18PS100 delivers dependable build quality and real-world performance without breaking the bank. It’s the workhorse driver that gets the job done — reliably, efficiently, and without drama.
