B&C 18RS115 – Superior 18-Inch RS Series Subwoofer Driver with Extreme Displacement

The B&C 18RS115 brings B&C’s new RS Series motor architecture to the 18-inch format — and the result is one of the most capable 18-inch subwoofer drivers in the professional audio market. With 23.5 mm of linear excursion, a 40 Tm force factor, 2000 W AES power handling, and 97.4 dB sensitivity, the B&C 18RS115 doesn’t ask you to choose between displacement and efficiency. It delivers both.

The RS Series philosophy is straightforward: use a four-layer copper-clad aluminium voice coil to concentrate more energy in the magnetic gap while generating less heat than conventional two-layer designs with larger coil diameters. The result is a driver that outperforms many alternatives carrying significantly bigger voice coils and higher power ratings — because raw wattage means nothing if the motor can’t convert it into acoustic output efficiently.

At 15.4 kg with a neodymium motor, the B&C 18RS115 sits in the heavyweight class for neodymium 18s — but that weight buys you a feature set that includes a demodulating ring, ventilated gap, woven lead wires, and the excursion capability to match dedicated long-throw designs costing considerably more.

Design and Construction of the B&C 18RS115

At the heart of the B&C 18RS115 sits a 116 mm (4.5-inch) four-layer copper-clad aluminium wire voice coil wound on a glass fibre former. The four-layer winding geometry is the defining feature of the RS Series — it packs more turns into the magnetic gap than a two-layer coil of the same diameter, concentrating energy where it matters most while spreading heat across a larger winding surface. This architecture is why the B&C 18RS115 achieves 97.4 dB sensitivity and 40 Tm of force factor from a 4.5-inch coil.

The 54 mm winding depth operating in a 14 mm magnetic gap yields 23.5 mm of linear one-way excursion (Xmax) with an additional 19 mm of travel (Xvar) before mechanical limits. That 42.5 mm total one-way excursion before damage is exceptional for an 18-inch driver and provides massive headroom for transient peaks. Excursion-optimised lead wires woven through the spider prevent fatigue and breakage at these sustained displacement levels.

The motor uses a neodymium inside-slug magnet in a T-pole configuration, producing 0.9 T of flux density. An aluminium demodulating ring reduces flux modulation in the voice coil gap, directly lowering harmonic and intermodulation distortion as excursion and power increase. A ventilated voice coil gap allows air circulation around the coil, reducing power compression so the B&C 18RS115 maintains its rated output during extended high-power use.

The straight-profile cone features TWP waterproof treatment on both sides for weather resistance. Suspension is handled by a double silicone spider with optimised compliance and a triple-roll surround. The 8 Ω nominal impedance makes the B&C 18RS115 ideal for parallel wiring in dual-driver cabinets, presenting a comfortable 4 Ω load to a single amplifier channel.

Performance and Applications for the B&C 18RS115

The B&C 18RS115 delivers 97.4 dB sensitivity and 1.95% reference efficiency across a 35 Hz – 1000 Hz bandwidth. What makes those numbers remarkable is the context — this driver also has 23.5 mm of Xmax and 2000 W AES power handling. Most drivers that achieve this level of excursion sacrifice sensitivity to get there. The RS Series architecture avoids that trade-off by using motor efficiency rather than brute-force power to drive the cone.

The Thiele–Small parameters define a driver purpose-built for vented and horn-loaded enclosures. A Qts of 0.22 and an EBP of 143 Hz leave no ambiguity — this driver does not belong in a sealed cabinet. The low Vas of 125 litres combined with the low Qts means the B&C 18RS115 wants a moderately sized vented enclosure. Expect an optimal alignment in the 120–180 litre range depending on your target tuning frequency and response shape — builders should model the T/S parameters in simulation software to dial in the exact alignment for their application.

The displacement capability is the headline. With 1210 cm² of radiating area and 23.5 mm of Xmax, the B&C 18RS115 moves air at a rate that rivals many 21-inch subwoofer drivers — from an 18-inch frame. For builders designing compact sub cabinets that need to compete with larger-format systems on raw output, this driver changes the equation.

Ideal applications for the B&C 18RS115 include:

  • High-output vented subwoofer cabinets for touring and live sound reinforcement
  • Compact sub designs needing displacement capability that rivals 21-inch drivers
  • Horn-loaded subwoofer enclosures where the low Qts and high EBP are ideal
  • Dual-driver sub cabinets using 8 Ω parallel pairs for 4 Ω loading
  • High-power DIY builds prioritising both output density and clean performance

Conclusion – B&C 18RS115 Subwoofer Driver

The B&C 18RS115 represents the pinnacle of B&C’s 18-inch subwoofer engineering. The RS Series motor architecture delivers what conventional designs can’t — 97.4 dB sensitivity and 23.5 mm of Xmax from the same driver. That combination of efficiency and displacement means you get high output at low power levels and massive headroom when you push the full 2000 W AES rating. Most 18-inch drivers make you choose between those two things. The B&C 18RS115 doesn’t.

The full feature set — demodulating ring, ventilated gap, woven lead wires, four-layer CCAW coil — makes it clear that B&C designed the B&C 18RS115 as a no-compromise platform for builders who demand the best from the 18-inch format. The displacement capability rivals 21-inch drivers, the sensitivity rivals high-efficiency horn drivers, and the distortion performance stays clean as power and excursion increase.

For touring subs, high-output DIY builds, and any application where an 18-inch frame needs to deliver 21-inch performance, the B&C 18RS115 is the driver that closes the gap. It’s B&C’s best 18-inch subwoofer, and the numbers back that claim without qualification.
