B&C 5FCX44 – Improve Your Compact Build with a 5″ Ferrite Coaxial That Reaches Down to 60 Hz

A 5-inch coaxial that responds down to 60 Hz? The B&C 5FCX44 does exactly that — extending deeper than any other 5-inch coaxial in B&C’s range. This hybrid ferrite/neodymium coaxial pairs a 44 mm copper-wound woofer with a 25 mm polyester compression driver, delivering genuine full-range two-way performance with 70-degree coverage from a frame just 136 mm across.

Like the 6FHX51, the B&C 5FCX44 uses a dual-magnet architecture: ferrite for the LF section to keep costs down, and a dedicated neodymium ring magnet for the HF driver to maximise high-frequency sensitivity. That neodymium-driven compression driver produces an extraordinary 107.5 dB sensitivity — giving your build vocal clarity and high-frequency projection that far exceeds what most 5-inch drivers can deliver.

For builders designing compact full-range speakers, small-venue install systems, nearfield monitors, or satellite speakers where you want real bass extension without adding a subwoofer, the B&C 5FCX44 gives you the deepest low end and highest HF sensitivity of any 5-inch coaxial in the lineup.

Design and Construction of the B&C 5FCX44

The hybrid magnet design is what sets the B&C 5FCX44 apart from the all-neodymium 5CXN44 and the ultra-compact 5CXN36. The LF section runs on a ferrite motor with 1.07 T flux density — actually higher than the 5CXN44’s 0.95 T — while the HF section uses its own neodymium ring magnet at 1.65 T. Each section gets the magnet that suits it best.

The low-frequency section uses a 44 mm (1.7-inch) copper voice coil on a Kapton former. That’s a large coil relative to the 5-inch cone, giving the driver generous thermal headroom for its size. The copper winding dissipates heat more effectively than aluminium for less power compression during sustained use.

The 12 g moving mass is remarkably light, delivering fast transient response with crisp vocal articulation and immediate percussive attack. The 10.5 Tm Bl factor is the highest of any 5-inch coaxial in B&C’s range — significantly stronger than both the 5CXN44’s 8.1 Tm and the 5CXN36’s 5.34 Tm. That motor authority keeps the ultra-light cone under tight control for punchy, defined bass.

The 60 Hz low-frequency extension is the headline number for the B&C 5FCX44. The 5CXN44 reaches 70 Hz and the 5CXN36 stops at 94 Hz, so the ferrite model actually reaches deeper than both neodymium alternatives. With a Qts of 0.25 and an EBP of 244 Hz, it’s firmly optimised for vented enclosures where port tuning extends that bass response even further.

The waterproof-treated paper cone handles moisture for outdoor and humid-venue builds. The 5 mm linear excursion provides clean output across the driver’s operating range.

The high-frequency section features a compact 25 mm (1-inch) aluminium voice coil driving a polyester diaphragm through a 19 mm exit. Despite the small HF driver, the dedicated neodymium motor pushes it to 107.5 dB sensitivity — the second highest HF output in B&C’s entire coaxial range, behind only the 6FHX51’s 108.5 dB. Polyester delivers smooth, well-damped highs with no harshness. The 2.5 kHz crossover point lets the woofer handle the full midrange before the HF driver takes over.

Performance and Applications for the B&C 5FCX44

The B&C 5FCX44 handles 200 W continuous on the LF section and 20 W on the HF. The HF power rating is modest, but with 107.5 dB sensitivity, the compression driver doesn’t need much power to produce serious output. A few watts of HF signal deliver substantial SPL at the listening position.

The Thiele–Small parameters point firmly toward vented enclosure designs. A Qts of 0.25 and EBP of 244 Hz — the highest EBP of any coaxial in B&C’s range — confirm the 5FCX44 is optimised for bass-reflex loading. The 7-litre Vas is manageable, and a compact vented box will give you the best low-frequency extension from the tiny cone area.

At 1.85 kg, the B&C 5FCX44 is heavier than the all-neodymium 5CXN44 (1.15 kg) and 5CXN36 (0.65 kg) due to the ferrite LF motor. But the ferrite magnet brings cost savings and long-term magnetic stability — advantages that matter for permanent installations where the driver lives in a cabinet for years.

Builders commonly choose the B&C 5FCX44 for:

  • Compact full-range speakers where deep bass from a small driver matters
  • Small-venue installed sound in cafés, shops, and reception areas
  • Satellite speakers that need to work without a subwoofer
  • Budget-friendly nearfield monitors and desktop speakers
  • Speech and paging systems requiring high HF intelligibility
  • Column array elements where vocal projection is critical

Both drivers share the same acoustic centre for true point-source output with coherent phase alignment. The 70-degree dispersion provides focused, controlled coverage that suits nearfield listening and directional applications — keeping sound concentrated where your listeners are.

Conclusion

The B&C 5FCX44 is the 5-inch coaxial that goes deepest and projects highest. Its 60 Hz low-frequency extension reaches further than any other 5-inch coaxial in B&C’s range, while the neodymium-driven polyester compression driver delivers 107.5 dB HF sensitivity for exceptional vocal clarity and high-frequency presence.

With the strongest Bl factor of any B&C 5-inch coaxial at 10.5 Tm, the highest LF flux density at 1.07 T, and a hybrid ferrite/neodymium magnet design that optimises each section independently, the B&C 5FCX44 is the right choice for builders who want maximum performance from a 5-inch format — especially in applications where deep bass extension and cutting vocal projection matter more than saving every last gram of weight.
