B&C DCX464 – Precision 1.4″ Coaxial Ring Radiator with Patented Dual-Diaphragm Technology

The B&C DCX464 isn’t a conventional compression driver — it’s something entirely new. This patented coaxial ring radiator packs two independent diaphragms, two voice coils, and two dedicated frequency bands into a single 1.4-inch throat device. The result is a high-frequency section that covers 300 Hz to 18 kHz with over 111 dB sensitivity across the entire bandwidth.

The B&C DCX464 is the product of more than five years of R&D by B&C’s engineering team, protected by multiple patents. Its midrange diaphragm handles 300 Hz to 5.5 kHz at 111.1 dB sensitivity with a 100 mm voice coil, while its high-frequency diaphragm covers 3.5 kHz to 18 kHz at 111.4 dB sensitivity with a 65 mm voice coil. A patented midrange integrator allows both diaphragms to work in harmony for seamless bandwidth coverage.

For builders designing high-output PA systems, line arrays, or any cabinet where the compression driver needs to reach down to 300 Hz and still deliver pristine highs to 18 kHz, the B&C DCX464 gives you a complete mid-high solution from a single 1.4-inch throat device. Pair it with a woofer or subwoofer and you have an extraordinarily capable two-way system with crossover flexibility that no single-diaphragm driver can match.

Design and Construction of the B&C DCX464

The B&C DCX464 uses a time-coherent coaxial ring radiator architecture — a fundamentally different approach to high-frequency reproduction than a traditional single-diaphragm compression driver. Two concentric HT Polymer ring diaphragms operate independently, each optimised for its own frequency band, and both radiate through the same 36 mm (1.4-inch) throat.

The midrange section features a 100 mm (4-inch) aluminium voice coil driving an HT Polymer ring diaphragm. This is an enormous coil for a compression driver — larger than the voice coils on many 12-inch woofers. That coil diameter provides massive thermal capacity for the 220 W continuous power rating, while the HT Polymer diaphragm delivers smooth, well-damped midrange without the harshness that metal diaphragms can produce.

The high-frequency section uses a 65 mm (2.5-inch) aluminium voice coil driving a second HT Polymer ring diaphragm at 160 W continuous. The 2.14 T flux density at the HF gap is the highest in B&C’s entire driver catalogue — an extraordinary magnetic force that drives the 111.4 dB HF sensitivity figure.

B&C’s patented midrange integrator allows both diaphragms to work together seamlessly across a wide overlapping bandwidth. This means you can cross between the MF and HF sections anywhere from approximately 3.5 kHz to 5.5 kHz, or let the internal acoustics handle the transition naturally. The design eliminates the phase offset and lobing artefacts that separate MF and HF devices create.

The neodymium magnet assembly delivers 1.9 T flux density at the MF gap and 2.14 T at the HF gap. Brand new materials and thousands of hours of modelling and testing have resulted in lower distortion at higher SPL than any previous B&C compression driver.

Despite the dual-driver architecture, the B&C DCX464 weighs just 3.64 kg and measures 152 mm in diameter by 78 mm deep. It mounts with the same four M6 holes on a 102 mm bolt circle as standard 1.4-inch compression drivers, so it’s compatible with existing 1.4-inch horns and waveguides.

Performance and Applications for the B&C DCX464

The B&C DCX464 covers 300 Hz to 18 kHz with combined power handling of 220 W MF and 160 W HF. The 111+ dB sensitivity across both sections means your system achieves extreme SPL from the mid-high device alone. Pair it with a single 15 or 18-inch woofer crossed at 300 Hz and you have a devastatingly capable two-way PA system.

The 300 Hz lower limit is what makes the DCX464 truly special. Most 1.4-inch compression drivers recommend crossover at 1.2 kHz or higher. The DCX464’s 100 mm midrange coil and ring radiator design allow it to operate a full two octaves lower, which means your woofer only needs to cover the bass — it doesn’t need to handle midrange at all.

This transforms system design. Your woofer can be crossed lower, reducing distortion and power compression in the midrange. The compression driver handles more of the audible spectrum with higher sensitivity and lower distortion than any cone driver can achieve. The result is a system that sounds louder, cleaner, and more detailed at every listening position.

B&C offers purpose-designed loading for the DCX464: the ME464 80×60 degree point-source horn loading down to 300 Hz, and the ME148 line-array waveguide for use down to 500 Hz. Passive crossover options include the FB464 and FB464V2.

Builders commonly choose the B&C DCX464 for:

  • High-output two-way PA systems with a single woofer + DCX464
  • Line array elements requiring compact, high-SPL mid-high sections
  • Point-source cabinets where one device replaces separate MF and HF drivers
  • Flagship monitor and FOH builds demanding the lowest possible distortion
  • System upgrades where a single DCX464 replaces a traditional compression driver

Available in both 8 Ω and 16 Ω versions, the B&C DCX464 gives you impedance flexibility for different amplifier configurations and multi-driver line array wiring schemes.

The B&C DCX464 is unlike anything else in B&C’s range — or anyone else’s. Its patented coaxial ring radiator design puts two independent HT Polymer diaphragms, two voice coils, and two frequency bands into a single 1.4-inch throat device that covers 300 Hz to 18 kHz at over 111 dB sensitivity. It is, quite simply, the most advanced compression driver B&C has ever built.

With a 100 mm MF coil handling 220 W, a 65 mm HF coil at 2.14 T flux density, purpose-designed ME464 and ME148 horn options, and matched FB464 passive crossovers available, the B&C DCX464 gives you a complete mid-high solution from a single device. Whether you’re building a flagship two-way PA, a line array element, or a reference monitor that needs the absolute best high-frequency reproduction available, the DCX464 sets a new standard in what a 1.4-inch throat device can achieve.
