10″ Mid Bass Driver

18 Sound 10NTLW2000 – Lightest 10-Inch Neodymium Woofer with Tetracoil Motor and 98.5 dB Sensitivity

The 18 Sound 10NTLW2000 is the highest-sensitivity, lightest 10-inch woofer in 18 Sound’s range. At 98.5 dB sensitivity, 2.8% reference efficiency, and 1.9 kg, the 18 Sound 10NTLW2000 produces more acoustic output per watt and per gram than any other 18 Sound 10-inch driver. The Tetracoil (TTC) dual voice coil technology — the predecessor to the Dual Gap motor that powers the 10NTLW2500 and 10NTLW3500 — delivers 17.9 Tm force factor from a 51 mm coil in an 8.5 mm dual gap, producing the highest acceleration factor in the 10-inch range from the lightest platform.

The 98.5 dB sensitivity is 1.5 dB above the 10NTLW3500’s 95 dB, 2 dB above the 10NTLW2500’s 96.5 dB, 2.5 dB above the 10NW650’s 96 dB, and 4.5 dB above the 10NW750’s 94 dB. The 18 Sound 10NTLW2000 produces roughly three times more acoustic power per watt than the 10NW750. For line arrays where amplifier power is distributed across elements, the sensitivity advantage is transformative — the same amplifier drives the array louder with less thermal stress on each element.

The 1.9 kg weight is the lightest of any 18 Sound 10-inch driver. A 16-element line array using the 18 Sound 10NTLW2000 saves 36.8 kg of driver weight compared to the same array using the 10NTLW3500 — weight savings that fundamentally change rigging calculations. The trade-off is displacement: the 4.4 mm Xmax and 60 Hz – 5000 Hz bandwidth confirm the 18 Sound 10NTLW2000 is a mid-bass sensitivity driver, not a bass-extension driver. Every parameter sacrifices low-frequency displacement for mid-band efficiency.

18 Sound now lists the 10NMB520 as the current alternative model. The 18 Sound 10NTLW2000’s combination of 98.5 dB, 1.9 kg, and 2.8% efficiency remains unmatched by any current 10-inch in the catalogue. Available in 8 and 16 Ω with a 14-litre recommended enclosure tuned to 70 Hz.

Design and Construction of the 18 Sound 10NTLW2000

The 18 Sound 10NTLW2000 uses a 51 mm (2-inch) CCAW (copper-clad aluminium wire) dual voice coil operating in a Tetracoil (TTC) neodymium dual-gap motor assembly. The motor shares the same 51 mm coil diameter and 8.5 mm dual gap found on the 6NTLW2000 (6.5-inch) and 8NTLW2000 (8-inch) — the same fundamental motor scaled across three format sizes.

The 13 mm winding depth in the 8.5 mm dual gap yields 4.4 mm of linear excursion. The deliberately short winding keeps the coil mass low — the CCAW aluminium combines copper’s surface conductivity with aluminium’s core weight savings — which is why the 38 g moving mass produces 98.5 dB sensitivity. The Bl/Mms ratio of 0.47 Tm/g is the highest acceleration factor in 18 Sound’s 10-inch range.

The 17.9 Tm force factor is the second-highest of any 18 Sound 10-inch (behind only the 10NTLW3500’s 19.2 Tm). The Tetracoil motor’s dual-gap Bl symmetry maintains consistent force output across the excursion range, keeping intermodulation distortion low.

The straight cone profile supports the 5000 Hz upper bandwidth. The M-roll ultra-linear surround balances excursion and mid-band precision. The weather-protected cone treatment provides outdoor durability.

The 0.63 mH Le is linearised by the dual-gap motor’s symmetrical magnetic circuit. The 0.22 Qts and 259 Hz EBP are the second-most motor-dominant alignment in the 10-inch range (behind only the 10NTLS2000’s 0.19 Qts) — confirming the 18 Sound 10NTLW2000 is designed for vented and horn-loaded enclosures.

At 1.9 kg, 260 mm overall diameter, 233 mm baffle cutout, 141 mm depth, and 10 mm flange.

Performance and Applications for the 18 Sound 10NTLW2000

The 18 Sound 10NTLW2000 delivers 98.5 dB sensitivity across a 60 Hz – 5000 Hz bandwidth. The 2.8% reference efficiency is the highest of any 18 Sound 10-inch — the driver converts nearly three watts of acoustic energy from every 100 watts of electrical input.

The 350 W AES / 700 W program power handling is lower than the Dual Gap flagships (500 W on 10NTLW2500, 800 W on 10NTLW3500) but appropriate for the Tetracoil platform’s 51 mm coil. The 98.5 dB sensitivity compensates — at full rated power, the 18 Sound 10NTLW2000 produces sustained output that approaches the 10NTLW2500’s maximum despite handling 150 W less.

The 4.4 mm Xmax limits bass displacement. Below 100 Hz, the driver runs out of excursion before it runs out of power. The 18 Sound 10NTLW2000 operates best from 70 Hz upward — the mid-bass and mid-range bands where live sound energy peaks — with a dedicated sub handling deep bass.

18 Sound recommends a 14-litre enclosure tuned to 70 Hz — the most compact recommendation of any 18 Sound 10-inch woofer after the 10NTLS2000’s sub-focused alignment.

Within the complete 10-inch range, the 18 Sound 10NTLW2000 occupies the efficiency extreme. The 10NTLW3500 delivers maximum power (800 W) at 4.2 kg. The 10NTLW2500 delivers balanced power and sensitivity (500 W, 96.5 dB) at 3.1 kg. The 10NW750 delivers DDR dual distortion reduction (450 W) at 3.8 kg. The 10NW650 delivers lightweight ISV bandwidth (6000 Hz) at 2.7 kg. The 18 Sound 10NTLW2000 delivers maximum sensitivity (98.5 dB) at minimum weight (1.9 kg) — the efficiency benchmark that no other 10-inch approaches.

Conclusion – 18 Sound 10NTLW2000 Woofer

The 18 Sound 10NTLW2000 is the efficiency benchmark of 18 Sound’s 10-inch range. The 98.5 dB sensitivity, 2.8% efficiency, and 1.9 kg weight are all range-leading figures. The Tetracoil dual-gap motor’s 17.9 Tm force factor driving 38 g of moving mass produces the highest acceleration factor of any 18 Sound 10-inch — the fastest, most responsive, most efficient platform in the catalogue.

The trade-off against the DG flagships is honest. The 10NTLW2500 provides more power (500 vs 350 W) and more Xmax (7.6 vs 4.4 mm). The 10NTLW3500 provides 800 W with 2× SDR and 7.9 mm Xmax. The 18 Sound 10NTLW2000 provides more sensitivity (98.5 dB), less weight (1.9 kg), wider bandwidth (5000 Hz), and a smaller enclosure (14 litres). Different priorities, different applications — the Tetracoil maximises output per watt and per gram while the DG motors maximise sustained power and displacement.

For line arrays, compact mid-bass tops, horn-loaded applications, and any system where the 10-inch driver needs to deliver the absolute maximum SPL per watt and per gram from the smallest possible enclosure, the 18 Sound 10NTLW2000 is the 10-inch that puts efficiency above everything else. Ninety-eight point five dB, 2.8% efficiency, 1.9 kilograms — the lightest, loudest, most efficient 10-inch in the range.
