18 Sound 10M600 – Flagship 10-Inch Ferrite Midrange with 75 mm ISV Voice Coil and 102 dB Sensitivity

The 18 Sound 10M600 is the result of 18 Sound’s intensive development programme to produce the best 10-inch ferrite midrange driver available. With 102 dB sensitivity, a 75 mm edgewound ISV voice coil, 400 W AES power handling, 17.6 Tm force factor, and a 0.23 Qts that confirms extreme motor dominance, the 18 Sound 10M600 delivers the kind of midrange authority that professional touring, auditorium, and outdoor festival systems demand from their mid-frequency section — and it’s the platform from which 18 Sound’s 10MB600/10MB777 mid-bass drivers were developed.

The 102 dB sensitivity from a 10-inch midrange with a 75 mm coil is a benchmark figure. It exceeds the 10MB400’s 100.5 dB by 1.5 dB and the 10MB600/10MB777 platform’s 98 dB by 4 dB, while adding significantly more power handling than the 10MB400 (400 vs 250 W AES) and far less Xmax than the 10MB600/10MB777 (4 vs 6.5 mm) — trading displacement for pure midrange sensitivity. Within the neodymium range, the AIC-equipped 10NDA610 surpasses it at 103 dB, but the 18 Sound 10M600 remains the highest-sensitivity ferrite midrange 18 Sound makes.

18 Sound designed the 18 Sound 10M600 specifically for direct-radiating and horn-loaded midrange applications in three-way and four-way systems. The driver handles the critical vocal and presence band — 80 Hz to 5200 Hz — with the sensitivity and motor authority to keep pace with the high-output bass and HF sections in the largest professional sound systems.

At 7.35 kg with an FEA-optimised ferrite magnet, edgewound ISV coil, corrosion-resistant plate coatings, and weather-protected cone treatment, the 18 Sound 10M600 is built for the sustained, demanding operation that professional touring and installed sound require.


Design and Construction of the 18 Sound 10M600

The 18 Sound 10M600 uses a 75 mm (3-inch) fine edgewound aluminium ISV (Interleaved Sandwich Voice Coil) wound on a high-strength glass fibre former — the same coil diameter as the 10MB600/10MB777 mid-bass platform, but edgewound rather than standard-wound, and tuned for midrange rather than mid-bass duties. The ISV architecture places conductor on both inner and outer surfaces of the former, creating the mass-balanced coil that produces linear motor behaviour.

The 17.6 Tm force factor driving 32 g of moving mass produces the 0.23 Qts and 280 Hz EBP that define the 18 Sound 10M600 as an extreme motor-dominant transducer. The Bl/Mms ratio of 0.55 Tm/g is among the highest of any 18 Sound 10-inch ferrite driver we’ve covered — the motor has more authority per gram of cone mass than the 10MB600/10MB777’s 18.6 Tm from 38 g (0.49 Tm/g).

The curvilinear paper cone uses a special high-strength wood pulp composition designed for maximum linearity within the mid-frequency range, engineered specifically to control bell-mode resonances around the cone circumference. The M-roll surround uses a material 18 Sound describes as more resistant to ageing and fatigue than traditional materials, providing correct damping through the 4 mm Xmax — far less than the 10MB600/10MB777’s 6.5 mm, confirming the 18 Sound 10M600’s midrange-only design intent.

Voice coil cooling uses airways between the chassis back plate and the magnet face plate, developed using 3D CAD resources for maximum thermal exchange. The ferrite magnetic structure has been optimised using in-house FEA CAD, maximising flux density in the voice coil gap. A special corrosion-resistant treatment on both plates protects the motor structure — 18 Sound describes it as more effective than any other in use today.

The 1.28 mH inductance is the highest of any 18 Sound 10-inch driver we’ve covered except the 10MB600/10MB777’s 1.6 mH. Without a copper shorting ring or SDR, the 5200 Hz bandwidth requires crossover management — active systems compensate with DSP, while passive crossovers need impedance compensation networks.

At 7.35 kg, 260 mm overall diameter, and 126 mm depth, the 18 Sound 10M600 is marginally lighter and shallower than the 10MB600/10MB777 (7.2 kg, 127 mm) despite sharing the same 75 mm coil format.


Performance and Applications for the 18 Sound 10M600

The 18 Sound 10M600 delivers 102 dB sensitivity across an 80 Hz – 5200 Hz bandwidth. The 400 W AES / 500 W continuous program power handling is lower than the 10MB600/10MB777’s 450 W but the 4 dB sensitivity advantage more than compensates — the 18 Sound 10M600 produces the highest sustained mid-frequency output of any ferrite 10-inch driver in the range.

The 80 Hz lower frequency limit gives the 18 Sound 10M600 more bass reach than the 10NDA610 (100 Hz) or the sealed-back 8-inch 8NM610 (400 Hz). In three-way systems where the woofer crosses over at 200–400 Hz, the 18 Sound 10M600 provides comfortable overlap below the crossover point.

The Thiele–Small parameters define the most motor-dominant ferrite 10-inch driver in 18 Sound’s range. 18 Sound recommends a 20-litre enclosure without specifying tuning — suggesting the driver works in both sealed and vented configurations, and particularly well horn-loaded, where the 0.23 Qts and 280 Hz EBP produce tight, fast, precisely controlled midrange output.

The comparison to the 10MB400 remains the most relevant for builders choosing between 18 Sound’s ferrite 10-inch midrange options. The 10MB400 offers higher bandwidth (6100 vs 5200 Hz), lighter weight (4.7 vs 7.35 kg), and a copper shorting ring for better impedance linearisation. The 18 Sound 10M600 offers higher sensitivity (102 vs 100.5 dB), more power (400 vs 250 W AES), more Xmax (4 vs 2.5 mm), and a stronger motor (17.6 vs 12 Tm Bl).

For builders wanting neodymium-class sensitivity without the ferrite weight penalty, the AIC-equipped 10NDA610 delivers 103 dB — 1 dB more than the 18 Sound 10M600 — at less than half the weight (3.5 vs 7.35 kg), with near-zero inductance (0.06 vs 1.28 mH). The 18 Sound 10M600 remains the choice where ferrite pricing outweighs the neodymium AIC platform’s weight and inductance advantages.
