10″ Woofer Driver

18 Sound 10NW650 – Ultralight 10-Inch Neodymium Woofer with ISV Voice Coil and 6000 Hz Bandwidth

The 18 Sound 10NW650 is the lightest and widest-bandwidth 10-inch neodymium woofer in 18 Sound’s range. At 2.7 kg — lighter than any other neodymium 10-inch except the Tetracoil 10NTLW2000’s 1.9 kg — with 96 dB sensitivity, 300 W AES power handling, a 60 Hz – 6000 Hz bandwidth, and a 65 mm edgewound ISV voice coil, the 18 Sound 10NW650 delivers the best balance of sensitivity, bandwidth, and minimum weight for line arrays and compact two-way systems where output per gram defines the system’s value.

The 6000 Hz bandwidth is the widest of any neodymium 10-inch woofer in 18 Sound’s range. The 10NW750 reaches 5000 Hz. The 10NTLW2500 reaches 4500 Hz. The 10NTLW2000 reaches 5000 Hz. The 18 Sound 10NW650 extends 1000 Hz beyond the next closest neodymium competitor, reaching into the lower treble where vocal presence and consonant clarity define intelligibility.

The 96 dB sensitivity is 2 dB above the 10NW750’s 94 dB — the lighter 34 g moving mass produces more output per watt than the 10NW750’s heavier 45 g assembly. For line arrays where each element runs from a shared amplifier channel, 2 dB more sensitivity per element produces either more total array output or the same output from less amplification.

The 2.7 kg weight compounds across every element. A 16-element array using the 18 Sound 10NW650 saves 17.6 kg of driver weight compared to the same array using the 10NW750 — weight savings that affect rigging calculations, structural certification, and crew logistics.

18 Sound now lists the 10W650 as the current alternative model. The 18 Sound 10NW650’s combination of 96 dB sensitivity, 6000 Hz bandwidth, and 2.7 kg weight continues to make it a compelling specification. Available in 8 and 16 Ω with a 30-litre recommended enclosure tuned to 55 Hz.

Design and Construction of the 18 Sound 10NW650

The 18 Sound 10NW650 uses a 65 mm (2.5-inch) edgewound aluminium ISV (Interleaved Sandwich Voice Coil) wound on a high-strength glass fibre former. The edgewound construction packs more conductor into the magnetic gap per unit of coil height, maximising force output. The ISV places conductor on both surfaces of the former for mass-balanced, linear motor behaviour.

The 14 Tm force factor driving 34 g of moving mass produces 96 dB sensitivity. The Bl/Mms ratio of 0.41 Tm/g is higher than the 10NW750’s 0.36 Tm/g — confirming the 18 Sound 10NW650’s stronger motor authority per gram of cone mass, which is why it produces 2 dB more sensitivity from a lighter assembly.

The external neodymium magnet provides high flux concentration and excellent heat exchange. Voice coil cooling uses airways placed between the chassis back plate and the magnet faceplate, with carefully designed ventilation ducts channelling heated air away from the coil and gap.

The double roll surround provides controlled excursion through the 7 mm Xmax — lighter than the 10NW750’s triple roll, contributing to the lower moving mass. The curvilinear cone uses 18 Sound’s treated paper composition. The humidity-repellent treatment and epoxy-coated plates provide outdoor durability.

The 0.7 mH Le is manageable for the 6000 Hz bandwidth — the ISV coil’s symmetrical winding keeps the impedance curve more consistent than single-sided designs despite the absolute value. No SDR or copper ring — the 18 Sound 10NW650 relies on the ISV coil’s inherent linearity for its distortion performance.

At 2.7 kg, 260 mm overall diameter, 230 mm baffle cutout, 131 mm depth, and 9 mm flange — the thinnest flange of any 18 Sound 10-inch.

Performance and Applications for the 18 Sound 10NW650

The 18 Sound 10NW650 delivers 96 dB sensitivity across a 60 Hz – 6000 Hz bandwidth. The 6000 Hz upper bandwidth provides a full two octaves of overlap with compression drivers crossed over at 2000 Hz — the widest overlap of any neodymium 10-inch, supporting the smoothest crossover transitions with the gentlest filter slopes.

The Qts of 0.28 and EBP of 175 Hz place the 18 Sound 10NW650 in motor-dominant vented territory. 18 Sound recommends a 30-litre enclosure tuned to 55 Hz — a compact cabinet with deeper tuning than the 10NW750’s 60 Hz, providing slightly more bass extension.

The 300 W AES / 600 W program power handling is the trade-off for the lighter, more efficient design. The 10NW750 handles 450 W AES with its 75 mm coil. For line arrays where each element operates at moderate to high power and the array’s cumulative output provides system-level SPL, 300 W AES per element is typically sufficient.

Within the full 10-inch range, the 18 Sound 10NW650 occupies the lightweight, high-efficiency tier alongside the Tetracoil 10NTLW2000. The 10NTLW2000 delivers more sensitivity (98.5 vs 96 dB) at less weight (1.9 vs 2.7 kg) with dual-gap technology — but from a narrower bandwidth (5000 vs 6000 Hz) and less Xmax (4.4 vs 7 mm). The 18 Sound 10NW650 delivers wider bandwidth and more displacement from a single-gap ISV platform. Different technologies, different strengths — both targeting the lightweight line array element market.

The comparison to the ferrite 10W650 defines the neodymium vs ferrite decision for the 650 platform. The 18 Sound 10NW650 delivers lighter weight (2.7 vs 4.3 kg), more Xmax (7 vs 5.7 mm), more power (300 vs 250 W AES), and lower Qts (0.28 vs 0.48). The 10W650 delivers SDR distortion reduction, lower inductance (0.59 vs 0.7 mH), more enclosure flexibility (0.48 Qts), and lower cost. Same sensitivity (96 dB), same physical dimensions.

Conclusion – 18 Sound 10NW650 Woofer

The 18 Sound 10NW650 is the lightweight, wide-bandwidth champion of 18 Sound’s neodymium 10-inch range. The 96 dB sensitivity, 6000 Hz bandwidth, and 2.7 kg weight deliver the best combination of output per watt, frequency coverage, and minimum mass from a single-gap ISV platform.

The trade-offs against the 10NW750 are power (300 vs 450 W AES) and distortion reduction (no rings vs DDR). Against the 10NTLW2000, the trade-offs are sensitivity (96 vs 98.5 dB) and weight (2.7 vs 1.9 kg). Against the 10W650, the trade-off is cost and enclosure flexibility. Every 10-inch driver in the range makes different compromises — the 18 Sound 10NW650’s compromise is the lightest neodymium ISV weight with the widest bandwidth.

For line arrays, compact two-way systems, portable PA, and any 10-inch application where output per gram and frequency coverage per driver define the specification, the 18 Sound 10NW650 is the 10-inch ISV woofer that balances everything — 96 dB, 6000 Hz, 7 mm Xmax, 2.7 kg.
