18 Sound 12MB600 – Extreme Motor Dominance Ferrite 12-Inch Mid-Bass with 101 dB Sensitivity
The 18 Sound 12MB600 is a high sensitivity (101 dB 1W/1m) mid-bass driver with high power handling capabilities. It can be used as either a bass/mid driver in compact two-way reflex enclosures or as a direct-radiating or horn-loaded, dedicated midrange driver, in multi-way touring and fixed installation concert and arena systems — the same dual-purpose application category found across 18 Sound’s 75 mm-coil ferrite mid-bass family, here delivered without the DDR or SDR distortion-reduction rings found on its siblings, yet still achieving the lowest Qts (0.18) of any ferrite 12-inch driver we’ve documented.
The 75 mm aluminium wire voice coil employs the Interleaved Sandwich Voice Coil (ISV) technology, in which a high-strength fibreglass former carries windings on both the outer and inner surfaces to achieve a mass-balanced coil. This results in an extremely linear motor assembly with a reduced tendency for eccentric behaviour when driven hard — the ISV architecture alone, without ring-based distortion reduction, still produces the driver’s exceptional 0.18 Qts extreme motor control.

Design and Construction of the 18 Sound 12MB600
The curvilinear paper cone is made with a special high-strength wood pulp designed to achieve the best possible linearity within its intended frequency range and to control bell-mode resonances around the cone circumference. The cone is carried by a multiroll suspension formed from a linen-like material which is more resistant to ageing and fatigue than traditional materials.

The 18.0 Tm force factor driving 43 g of moving mass produces 101 dB sensitivity and the extraordinary 0.18 Qts / 231 Hz EBP alignment — the lowest Qts of any ferrite 12-inch driver in this comparison, even without ring-based distortion reduction, achieved through the ISV coil’s fundamental mass-balanced linearity combined with the FEA-optimised magnetic circuit.
The 1.32 mH Le is notably higher than the DDR-equipped 12MB700’s 0.9 mH — the absence of demodulating rings on the 18 Sound 12MB600 leaves more residual inductance uncompensated, a direct trade-off for whatever cost or complexity savings the simpler motor architecture provides.
The ability to perform properly under inclement weather conditions is a feature in 18 Sound’s philosophy. Hence, an exclusive treatment is applied to the cone giving it water-repellent properties. In addition, another special treatment is applied to the top and back plates making the transducer far more resistant to the corrosive effects of salts and oxidisation.
At 8.3 kg, 315 mm overall diameter, 282 mm baffle cutout, and 147 mm depth, the 18 Sound 12MB600 matches the 12MB700’s weight and depth precisely, despite the different motor ring technology between the two.
Performance and Applications for the 18 Sound 12MB600
The 18 Sound 12MB600 delivers 101 dB sensitivity across a 58 Hz – 5000 Hz bandwidth — closely matching the 12MB700’s 60–5000 Hz range and just 0.5 dB below its 101.5 dB sensitivity, despite the absence of DDR technology.
18 Sound recommends a 50-litre (1.77 ft³) vented enclosure tuned to 55 Hz — identical to the 12MB700’s recommendation. The 450 W AES / 600 W continuous program power handling also matches the 12MB700 exactly.
The 0.18 Qts is the lowest of any ferrite 12-inch driver we’ve documented, even lower than the DDR-equipped 12MB700’s 0.19 and the 12MB777’s 0.19 — confirming that ring-based distortion reduction and extreme motor dominance are separate engineering achievements; the 18 Sound 12MB600 delivers the latter without the former.
The comparison to the 12MB700 raises a genuine question for builders: with near-identical sensitivity, bandwidth, weight, and enclosure recommendation, the primary differentiator is DDR distortion reduction (present on the 12MB700, absent here) versus the 18 Sound 12MB600’s marginally lower Qts and the availability of a 4 Ω variant that the 12MB700 doesn’t offer. For applications where 4 Ω operation is required, or where the specific 0.18 Qts alignment is preferred, the 18 Sound 12MB600 remains a distinct and valid specification.
