18 Sound 12MB810 – High-Sensitivity Ferrite 12-Inch Mid-Bass with 100 dB Output and 1000 Watt Program Handling

The 18 Sound 12MB810 is a very high sensitivity (100 dB 1W/1m) mid-bass driver with high power handling capabilities, built on a ferrite motor rather than the neodymium platforms found across most of 18 Sound’s ND-series 12-inch range. It can be used as either a bass/mid driver in compact two-way reflex enclosures or as a direct-radiating or horn-loaded, dedicated midrange driver, in multi-way touring and fixed installation concert and arena systems — the same dual-purpose application philosophy 18 Sound applies to the neodymium 12ND710 and 12ND610, here delivered from a ferrite platform.

The 75 mm diameter state-of-the-art copper voice coil employs 18 Sound’s Interleaved Sandwich Voice Coil (ISV) technology, resulting in an extremely linear motor assembly with a reduced tendency for eccentric behaviour when driven hard. The excellent performance capabilities of this loudspeaker are further enhanced by Single Demodulating Rings (SDR), designed to dramatically reduce the intermodulation and harmonic distortion and improve transient response.

The magnetic structure has been optimised using FEA CAD resource, maximising the flux density in the voice coil gap and its cooling. This is a genuinely powerful ferrite motor — the 20.5 Tm force factor is substantial for the format, and the 3.8% reference efficiency confirms the FEA optimisation extracts serious output-per-watt from the ferrite magnetic circuit.

At 7.8 kg, the 18 Sound 12MB810 is dramatically heavier than any neodymium 12-inch driver we’ve documented — the ferrite penalty for matching 100 dB sensitivity is stark and unambiguous. Limited distribution U.S. only; contact Universal Music, 18 Sound’s U.S. official distributor, for information.

Design and Construction of the 18 Sound 12MB810

The curvilinear paper cone, made from a special high-strength wood pulp, has been designed to achieve the best possible linearity within its intended frequency range and to control bell-mode resonances around the cone circumference. The cone is carried by a multiroll suspension formed of a linen-like material, which is more resistant to ageing and fatigue than traditional materials — the same suspension philosophy found across 18 Sound’s ND-series high-sensitivity mid-bass drivers, here applied to the ferrite platform.

The 75 mm diameter state-of-the-art copper voice coil employs Interleaved Sandwich Voice Coil (ISV) technology with a 15 mm winding depth operating in a 10 mm magnetic gap. This results in an extremely linear motor assembly with a reduced tendency for eccentric behaviour when driven hard.

The excellent performance capabilities of this loudspeaker are further enhanced by Single Demodulating Rings (SDR) designed to dramatically reduce the intermodulation and harmonic distortion and improve transient response — producing the 0.79 mH Le figure, reasonably controlled for a 75 mm ferrite-motor coil.

The magnetic structure has been optimised using FEA CAD resource, maximising the flux density in the voice coil gap and its cooling. The 20.5 Tm force factor driving 59 g of moving mass produces 100 dB sensitivity and the 0.20 Qts / 230 Hz EBP alignment — extreme motor dominance matching the best neodymium ND-series drivers, achieved here from a considerably heavier ferrite magnetic circuit.

An exclusive treatment has been applied to the cone giving it water-repellent properties.

At 7.8 kg, 310 mm overall diameter, 283 mm baffle cutout, and 142 mm depth, the 18 Sound 12MB810 is nearly double the weight of the comparable neodymium 12ND710 (4.4 kg) — the direct cost of matching similar sensitivity and motor-control specifications through a ferrite rather than neodymium magnetic circuit.

Performance and Applications for the 18 Sound 12MB810

The 18 Sound 12MB810 delivers 100 dB sensitivity across a 90 Hz – 4000 Hz bandwidth. It can be used as either a bass/mid driver in compact two-way reflex enclosures or as a direct-radiating or horn-loaded, dedicated midrange driver, in multi-way touring and fixed installation concert and arena systems.

18 Sound recommends a 25-litre (0.88 ft³) vented enclosure tuned to 60 Hz — a compact cabinet volume consistent with the 0.20 Qts extreme motor-dominant alignment.

The 500 W AES / 1000 W continuous program power handling is substantial, and combined with the 100 dB sensitivity produces very high maximum sustained output — the FEA-optimised ferrite motor’s cooling engineering directly supports this power rating.

The 90 Hz lower frequency limit and narrower 4000 Hz upper bandwidth (compared to the neodymium 12ND710’s 60–6000 Hz) confirm the 18 Sound 12MB810 is tuned specifically for the mid-bass and midrange application band rather than extending toward bass reproduction or higher mid-range presence — a narrower, more focused operating window than its neodymium counterpart.

The comparison to the neodymium 12ND710 is the most relevant for builders weighing this driver. Both deliver comparable sensitivity (100 vs 101 dB) and identical 0.20 Qts motor dominance. The 12ND710 offers considerably lighter weight (4.4 vs 7.8 kg), wider bandwidth (60–6000 vs 90–4000 Hz), and dual 8/16 Ω availability. The 18 Sound 12MB810 offers higher power handling (500 vs 450 W AES, 1000 vs 700 W program) and the potential cost advantage of a ferrite motor over neodymium — a trade firmly in favour of raw power and cost over weight and bandwidth.

For U.S. market applications where ferrite cost or specific power handling requirements outweigh the weight penalty, and where the driver’s operating band (90–4000 Hz) matches the intended crossover architecture, the 18 Sound 12MB810 delivers a genuinely high-sensitivity, high-power ferrite alternative to 18 Sound’s neodymium mid-bass/midrange range.

Conclusion – 18 Sound 12MB810 Mid-Bass Driver

The 18 Sound 12MB810 is 18 Sound’s high-sensitivity ferrite answer to the dual-purpose mid-bass/midrange driver category, delivering 100 dB sensitivity and extreme 0.20 Qts motor control that matches the best neodymium ND-series drivers, but from a considerably heavier 75 mm copper ISV coil and FEA-optimised ferrite motor. The 500 W AES / 1000 W continuous program power handling exceeds the comparable neodymium 12ND710, at the cost of nearly double the weight.

Limited to U.S. distribution through Universal Music, the 18 Sound 12MB810 represents a specific market and application niche — high power handling and sensitivity from a ferrite platform where weight is a secondary consideration to cost and power ceiling.
