12″ Woofer Driver

18 Sound 12ND610 – Extreme High-Output 12-Inch Neodymium Mid-Bass with 102 dB Sensitivity and Shallow 124 mm Profile

The 18 Sound 12ND610 is an extremely high output neodymium mid-bass transducer perfect for high-quality professional systems, designed for midrange and mid-bass frequency reproduction in horn-loaded as well as bass-reflex compact enclosures. With 102 dB sensitivity — the highest of any conventional 12-inch driver we’ve documented from 18 Sound — a 0.14 Qts that is the lowest across the entire 12-inch range, and a very shallow 124 mm profile, the 18 Sound 12ND610 represents 18 Sound’s most extreme motor-dominant, sensitivity-optimised 12-inch platform.

The 75 mm (3-inch) state-of-the-art inside-outside voice coil is similar to the one fitted to 18 Sound’s top-of-the-range 18-inch and 15-inch models, but it’s wound with aluminium wire — direct confirmation from 18 Sound that the coil technology found in this compact 12-inch mid-bass driver traces its lineage to the company’s flagship large-format platforms.

The transducer’s extremely powerful neodymium magnet assembly assures high flux concentration, low power compression, and excellent heat exchange. The levels of force factor and power handling result in the best power-to-weight ratio on the market today, per 18 Sound’s own claim — a claim genuinely supported by the 24.0 Tm force factor from a 3.9 kg total driver weight.

At 124 mm depth with weather-protected cone and corrosion-resistant plates, the 18 Sound 12ND610’s shallow profile makes it particularly suited to horn-loaded chambers and cabinet designs where mounting depth is constrained — and its 306 Hz EBP, the highest of any 12-inch driver we’ve documented, confirms this driver is engineered specifically for horn-loaded applications where extreme motor control matters most.

Design and Construction of the 18 Sound 12ND610

The 18 Sound 12ND610’s curvilinear paper cone has been designed by 18 Sound engineers with a special high-strength wood pulp to achieve the best possible linearity within its intended frequency range and to control bell-mode resonances around the cone circumference. Its cone is capable of carrying significant loadings thanks to a dedicated reinforcing treatment — a specific engineering detail addressing the mechanical stresses this extreme-output driver’s motor places on the cone assembly.

The cone is carried by a multiroll suspension built from a linen-like material, which is more resistant to ageing and fatigue than traditional materials — supporting the driver’s relatively short 3.5 mm Xmax with controlled, durable compliance.

The 75 mm state-of-the-art inside-outside voice coil is similar to the one fitted to 18 Sound’s top-of-the-range 18-inch and 15-inch models but is wound with aluminium wire. It employs the Interleaved Sandwich Voice Coil (ISV) technology in which a high-strength fibreglass former carries windings on both the outer and inner surfaces to achieve a mass-balanced coil. The final result is an extremely linear motor assembly with a reduced tendency for eccentric behaviour when driven hard.

The 24.0 Tm force factor driving just 49 g of moving mass produces 102 dB sensitivity and the extraordinary 0.14 Qts / 306 Hz EBP alignment — figures that place the 18 Sound 12ND610 in a distinct category from every other 12-inch driver in 18 Sound’s range. The Bl/Mms ratio of 0.49 Tm/g is exceptional, confirming a motor with near-total electromagnetic authority over the moving assembly.

A proprietary humidity-block cone treatment makes the transducer suitable for outdoor use in adverse weather conditions. In addition, a special coating applied to both the top and back plates makes the 18 Sound 12ND610 far more resistant to the corrosive effects of salts and oxidisation.

At 3.9 kg, 315 mm overall diameter, 282 mm baffle cutout, and just 124 mm depth — the very shallow profile 18 Sound specifically highlights as a defining feature — the 18 Sound 12ND610 is remarkably light and compact given its coil size and force factor, undercutting the 12ND710 (4.4 kg, 141 mm) and 12ND930 (4.4 kg, 140 mm) on both weight and depth despite delivering higher sensitivity than either.

Performance and Applications for the 18 Sound 12ND610

The 18 Sound 12ND610 delivers 102 dB sensitivity across an 80 Hz – 5500 Hz bandwidth. It has been designed for midrange and mid-bass frequency reproduction in horn-loaded as well as bass-reflex compact enclosures — the 80 Hz lower frequency limit confirms this is a genuinely mid-bass and midrange-focused driver rather than a full-range woofer, consistent with the extremely short 3.5 mm Xmax and extreme 0.14 Qts alignment.

18 Sound recommends a 25-litre (0.88 ft³) vented enclosure tuned to 50 Hz — the most compact recommended enclosure of any 12-inch ND-series driver we’ve documented, a direct consequence of the extreme motor dominance keeping the driver’s low-frequency behaviour tightly controlled even in a small cabinet.

The 306 Hz EBP is the highest of any 12-inch driver in 18 Sound’s range — higher than the 12ND710’s 260 Hz, the 12ND940’s 245 Hz, and the 12NMB1000’s 284 Hz. This positions the 18 Sound 12ND610 as 18 Sound’s most extreme horn-loading specialist at 12 inches — the motor’s overwhelming control over the cone produces the tightest, fastest, most precisely defined output available in horn-loaded configurations.

The 450 W AES / 700 W continuous program power handling is solid for a driver in this sensitivity class, and the reinforced cone treatment specifically addresses the mechanical demands of sustained high-output operation at this level of motor force.

For horn-loaded midrange sections in the largest touring and arena systems, the 18 Sound 12ND610’s combination of 102 dB sensitivity, extreme 0.14 Qts control, and very shallow 124 mm profile makes it a compelling choice where cabinet depth is constrained but maximum output and precision are still required. For bass-reflex compact enclosures, the 25-litre recommendation delivers a genuinely small-footprint mid-bass solution with output few competing 12-inch drivers can match.

The comparison to the 12ND710 — 18 Sound’s other high-sensitivity dual-purpose mid-bass/midrange driver — shows the 18 Sound 12ND610 pushing further in every direction that defines this category: 1 dB more sensitivity (102 vs 101 dB), 6 Tm more force factor (24.0 vs 18.0 Tm), a much lower Qts (0.14 vs 0.20), and a shallower, lighter chassis (124 mm/3.9 kg vs 141 mm/4.4 kg) — at the cost of a narrower lower bandwidth (80 vs 60 Hz) and less Xmax (3.5 vs 5.0 mm).

Conclusion – 18 Sound 12ND610 Mid-Bass Driver

The 18 Sound 12ND610 is 18 Sound’s most extreme motor-dominant 12-inch driver — 102 dB sensitivity, a 0.14 Qts that is the lowest across the entire range, and a 306 Hz EBP that confirms this is the ultimate horn-loading specialist among 18 Sound’s 12-inch platforms. The 75 mm ISV coil shares its lineage directly with 18 Sound’s top-of-the-range 15 and 18-inch flagships, here delivering what the company describes as the best power-to-weight ratio on the market today.

The very shallow 124 mm profile and 3.9 kg weight make the 18 Sound 12ND610 suitable for the most space-constrained horn-loaded chambers and compact cabinet designs, while the extreme motor control ensures output stays tight and precisely defined even at the driver’s substantial power handling ceiling.

For horn-loaded midrange sections, high-quality professional systems demanding maximum sensitivity and motor control, and applications where cabinet depth is a genuine constraint, the 18 Sound 12ND610 delivers a specification combination that no other 12-inch driver in 18 Sound’s range approaches.
