The 18 Sound 12NMB1000 is a state-of-the-art 12-inch mid-bass driver — and the most powerful motor in 18 Sound’s 12-inch range by a wide margin. Born from the best-selling ceramic 12MB1000, the 18 Sound 12NMB1000 offers extreme power handling capability with exceptional sensitivity over the mid-bass frequency range in a very lightweight package. With a 100 mm copper ISV voice coil, 24.4 Tm force factor — nearly double the 12NMB420’s 13.9 Tm — 102 dB sensitivity, 600 W AES / 1200 W continuous program power handling, and just 5.6 kg total weight, the 18 Sound 12NMB1000 delivers midrange-class output and motor authority from a 12-inch mid-bass frame.

The 100 mm voice coil is the largest coil diameter we’ve encountered in any 18 Sound 12-inch driver — larger even than the 88 mm coils found on the Dual Gap subwoofer and flagship woofer platforms. Combined with the copper winding’s superior electrical and thermal conductivity, this massive coil generates the 24.4 Tm force factor that drives the 61 g moving mass with what 18 Sound describes as excellent transient response and very low power compression.

18 Sound highlights improved heat dissipation via a unique motor design as a defining feature, and specifically positions the 18 Sound 12NMB1000 as ideal for direct radiating or horn-loaded mid-bass systems, as well as part of a 2 or 3-way system — ideally used in stage monitors, auditoriums, touring, and outdoor systems. Design and Construction of the 18 Sound 12NMB1000

The 18 Sound 12NMB1000 employs a state-of-the-art 100 mm (4-inch) copper Interleaved Sandwich Voice Coil (ISV), in which a high-strength fibreglass former carries windings on both the outer and inner surfaces. By means of a balanced coil with uniform distribution of mass and motive energy, this technology assures an extremely linear motor assembly — the same ISV principle found throughout 18 Sound’s range, here scaled to the largest coil diameter in the 12-inch lineup.

The 24.4 Tm force factor driving 61 g of moving mass produces 102 dB sensitivity and 4.5% reference efficiency — both figures are the highest of any 12-inch driver in 18 Sound’s range. The Bl/Mms ratio of 0.4 Tm/g reflects a motor engineered for the extreme output and control that direct-radiating and horn-loaded mid-bass applications demand, where minimising cone excursion while maximising force and sensitivity is the design priority.

Voice coil cooling has been achieved by incorporating airways between the chassis back plate and the top plate of the magnet, allowing heated air from the voice coil and gap to be channelled away and dissipated by the chassis basket. This technology is the result of a meticulous design exercise using a sophisticated in-house 3D CAD facility. The magnetic structure has also been optimised using 18 Sound’s in-house FEA CAD resource to maximise flux density in the voice coil gap.

The smooth curvilinear paper cone has a special high-strength wood pulp composition designed to achieve the best possible linearity within the middle frequency range and to control bell-mode resonances around the cone. The cone is carried by an M-roll suspension that provides, in 18 Sound’s own words, amazing dampening and excursion control through the 3.5 mm Xmax and 5.9 mm Xvar.

18 Sound R&D developed a special cone treatment specifically dedicated to improving the dampening properties of the moving assembly, considerably improving transient response control. This treatment also gives water-repellent properties to the cone, enabling the 18 Sound 12NMB1000 to be used in humid environments without damage — a dual-function treatment addressing both acoustic performance and environmental durability.

The 0.69 mH Le is moderate given the enormous 100 mm coil diameter — without SDR or copper ring compensation, the driver still achieves reasonable inductance linearity through the ISV’s inherently balanced winding.

At 5.6 kg, 315 mm overall diameter, 282 mm baffle cutout, and just 116 mm depth, the 18 Sound 12NMB1000 is remarkably shallow for a driver carrying a 100 mm coil — shallower than every neodymium 88 mm-coil driver in 18 Sound’s range and even shallower than several ferrite 65 mm-coil drivers. The 18 mm flange is the thickest of any 18 Sound 12-inch driver we’ve covered.

The 102 dB matches the 10-inch AIC-equipped 10NDA610’s sensitivity figure exactly, achieved here through raw motor force rather than active impedance control technology — the 100 mm coil and 24.4 Tm Bl extract this output through sheer electromagnetic authority.

18 Sound recommends a 30-litre (1.06 ft³) vented enclosure tuned to 65 Hz — a compact cabinet volume that reflects the extreme motor dominance of the 0.19 Qts alignment. The 284 Hz EBP places the 18 Sound 12NMB1000 firmly in horn-loaded and vented territory, where the powerful motor produces the tightest, fastest, most precisely controlled mid-bass output available in the 12-inch format.
