12″ Woofer Driver

18 Sound 12W750 – High-Power 12-Inch Ferrite Woofer with 75 mm ISV Voice Coil and 1200 Watt Program Handling

The 18 Sound 12W750 is a high-power ferrite 12-inch woofer that brings the linearity, efficiency, and power handling of 18 Sound’s 15W750 platform into a more compact 300 mm chassis for space-constrained systems. With a 75 mm ISV voice coil, 600 W AES / 1200 W continuous program power handling, 97 dB sensitivity, 8.0 mm Xmax, and a 50 Hz – 4600 Hz bandwidth, the 18 Sound 12W750 is engineered for compact reflex and band-pass enclosures, though it also performs well horn-loaded.

The 8.0 mm Xmax is the standout displacement figure — the longest excursion of any 18 Sound 12-inch driver we’ve covered, delivered through an unusually deep-profile triple roll suspension made from polycotton material that 18 Sound specifically engineered to be more resistant to ageing and fatigue than traditional cotton-based surrounds. That combination of long linear travel and durable suspension construction is what makes the 18 Sound 12W750 suitable for both compact two-way systems and dedicated subwoofer applications, per 18 Sound’s own positioning.

The 75 mm ISV coil is the same coil platform found throughout 18 Sound’s flagship range — an inside/outside wound, mass-balanced construction on a high-strength fibreglass former that produces an extremely linear motor assembly with reduced eccentric behaviour when driven hard. The FEA-optimised magnetic structure maximises flux density in the voice coil gap, producing the 18.0 Tm force factor that keeps the 57 g moving mass under firm control through the full 8.0 mm excursion range.

At 7.5 kg with weather-protected cone and corrosion-resistant plate treatment for outdoor durability, and available in 4, 8, and 16 Ω for maximum system design flexibility. 18 Sound lists the 12ND930 as the alternative/current model.

Design and Construction of the 18 Sound 12W750

The 18 Sound 12W750 uses a 75 mm (3-inch) aluminium ISV (Interleaved Sandwich Voice Coil) wound on a high-strength fibreglass former. The ISV architecture carries windings on both the outer and inner surfaces to achieve a mass-balanced coil, producing the extremely linear motor assembly with reduced tendency for eccentric behaviour under hard driving that 18 Sound applies across its 75 mm coil range.

The magnetic structure has been optimised using FEA CAD resource to maximise flux density in the voice coil gap. The 18.0 Tm force factor driving 57 g of moving mass produces 97 dB sensitivity and the 0.28 Qts / 163 Hz EBP that place the 18 Sound 12W750 in vented and band-pass territory — the driver is designed for reflex and band-pass enclosures primarily, with horn-loading as a secondary application.

The curvilinear paper cone is made from a special high-strength wood pulp designed to achieve the best possible linearity within the intended frequency range while controlling bell-mode resonances around the cone circumference. The cone is carried by an unusually deep-profile triple roll suspension made from polycotton material — a construction choice 18 Sound specifically highlights as more resistant to ageing and fatigue than traditional cotton-based surrounds, supporting the 8.0 mm Xmax with long-term mechanical reliability.

Voice coil cooling is achieved through airways between the chassis back plate and the top plate of the magnet, channelling heated air from the voice coil and gap away for dissipation through the chassis basket. Given the increasing use of audio systems at outdoor events, 18 Sound specifically engineered the 18 Sound 12W750 for adverse weather and high-humidity performance using an exclusive cone and magnet plate treatment process that increases corrosion resistance and renders the cone water repellent.

The 0.95 mH Le is moderate for a 75 mm coil without SDR or copper ring compensation — the ISV’s symmetrical winding provides some inductance linearity, but builders working with passive crossovers should account for impedance rise through the upper operating range.

At 7.5 kg, 310 mm overall diameter, 280 mm baffle cutout, 148 mm depth, and 11 mm flange, the 18 Sound 12W750 fits standard 12-inch cabinet designs.

Performance and Applications for the 18 Sound 12W750

The 18 Sound 12W750 delivers 97 dB sensitivity across a 50 Hz – 4600 Hz bandwidth. The 600 W AES / 1200 W continuous program power handling is substantial for a 12-inch ferrite woofer, positioning the driver for high-output applications where sustained power matters more than absolute minimum weight.

18 Sound recommends a 60-litre (2.12 ft³) vented enclosure tuned to 60 Hz — a generously sized cabinet that supports the driver’s stated role in both compact two-way systems and dedicated subwoofer applications. The 8.0 mm Xmax and 531 cm² radiating area combine for substantial volume displacement, and 18 Sound specifically notes the generous low-frequency output that makes the 18 Sound 12W750 suitable for subwoofer duty as well as full-range two-way use.

The 50 Hz lower frequency limit and 49 Hz Fs confirm genuine bass extension from the 12-inch format — deeper reach than most 10-inch options in 18 Sound’s range and competitive with dedicated subwoofer drivers. For two-way systems, the 4600 Hz upper bandwidth provides adequate overlap with a compression driver crossed over at 2000 Hz.

The triple roll polycotton surround’s long-term durability is a specific advantage for touring and rental applications where the driver undergoes repeated high-excursion cycles over years of service. The deep-profile geometry supports the 8.0 mm Xmax without the premature fatigue that shallower surrounds can exhibit at this displacement level.

The 4, 8, and 16 Ω impedance availability is the widest of any option in this class — the 4 Ω variant maximises power transfer for single-driver subwoofer applications, the 8 Ω is the professional standard, and the 16 Ω enables multi-driver line array and column configurations.

The weather-protected construction makes the 18 Sound 12W750 suitable for permanent outdoor installations and touring rigs exposed to routine weather conditions — festival stages, outdoor venues, and marine-adjacent installations where humidity and moisture exposure are constant operating factors.

Conclusion – 18 Sound 12W750 Woofer

The 18 Sound 12W750 brings the 15W750 platform’s linearity, efficiency, and power handling to a more compact 12-inch chassis. The 600 W AES / 1200 W program power handling, 8.0 mm Xmax from a durable deep-profile triple roll surround, and 97 dB sensitivity combine for a driver that performs equally well as a compact two-way woofer or a dedicated subwoofer component.

The weather-protected cone and plate treatment, FEA-optimised ferrite motor, and ISV coil linearity confirm this is a driver built for demanding professional use — touring, outdoor festivals, and installed sound where sustained high power and long-term mechanical durability matter as much as raw output. 18 Sound now lists the 12ND930 as the current alternative, but the 18 Sound 12W750’s combination of power handling, Xmax, and triple impedance availability remains a compelling specification for compact reflex, band-pass, and horn-loaded 12-inch applications.
