18 Sound 15NMB1000 – Flagship 15-Inch Mid-Low Driver with 100 mm Coil and 25.2 Tm Force Factor
The 18 Sound 15NMB1000 is a 100 mm (4-inch) voice coil, 380 mm (15-inch) diameter mid-low frequency transducer which has been created to meet requirements for low bass applications where a significant extension in mid frequency is needed. It has been designed for use in compact reflex enclosures, in two-way systems with 1.4-inch to 2-inch compression drivers, and stage monitoring applications. The 18 Sound 15NMB1000 is also suitable for horn-loaded applications in multiway systems.
The 25.2 Tm force factor is the highest of any driver documented across this entire session, at any diameter — exceeding even the 12NMB1000’s 24.4 Tm and the 10ND610’s 24.0 Tm, both of which previously held that distinction. Driving 100 g of moving mass, this produces 101 dB sensitivity, 4.7% reference efficiency, and the 0.24 Qts / 191 Hz EBP alignment that defines a genuinely extreme motor-dominant transducer suited to the horn-loaded and stage monitor applications 18 Sound specifically targets.
The low-profile, carbon fibre reinforced, smooth curvilinear cone provides smooth response within its intended frequency range and exceptional strength with maximum reliability under high mechanical stress. Intermodulation distortion has been significantly improved by the Single Demodulating Ring (SDR) embedded in the pole piece of the magnetic structure, designed to dramatically reduce the intermodulation and harmonic distortion while improving the transient response.
At 6.0 kg — remarkably light for a driver carrying a 100 mm coil and 25.2 Tm force factor — the 18 Sound 15NMB1000 delivers midrange-class output and motor authority from a 15-inch mid-low frame. 18 Sound now lists the ferrite 15MB1000 as the alternative/current model.
Design and Construction of the 18 Sound 15NMB1000
The 100 mm copper voice coil employs the Interleaved Sandwich Voice Coil (ISV) technology, in which a high-strength fibreglass former carries windings on both the outer and inner surfaces to achieve a balanced coil with a uniform distribution of mass and motive energy. This results in an extremely linear motor assembly with reduced eccentric behaviour under hard driving.
The Single Demodulating Ring (SDR) is embedded in the pole piece of the magnetic structure — designed to dramatically reduce the intermodulation and harmonic distortion while improving the transient response. The 25.2 Tm force factor driving 100 g of moving mass produces the driver’s exceptional sensitivity and the extreme 0.24 Qts alignment.
Excellent heat dissipation has been achieved by incorporating air channels between the basket and the magnetic top plate. Further ventilation is provided using air vents in the back plate that direct air into the lower part of the voice coil gap — a dual-path cooling approach addressing both the basket-to-top-plate airway and dedicated backplate venting directly into the gap.
Considerable attention has also been given to the design of the magnetic structure in order to maximise flux concentration and force factor in the gap — the engineering result being the highest Bl figure documented across this entire session.
The low-profile, carbon fibre reinforced, smooth curvilinear cone provides smooth response within its intended frequency range and exceptional strength with maximum reliability under high mechanical stress. This is the same carbon fibre reinforcement concept documented on the 12NLW9300 and 12LW801/800, here applied to a 15-inch mid-low platform where the combination of extreme motor force and substantial excursion demands maximum cone rigidity.
Due to the increasing use of high-power audio systems at outdoor events, the ability to perform in adverse weather conditions is a key feature of the 18 Sound 15NMB1000. This has been achieved using exclusive treatments which allow the cone and the magnetic plate to resist corrosion whilst also rendering the cone water repellent.
At 6.0 kg, 387 mm overall diameter, 357 mm baffle cutout, 174 mm depth, and a substantial 20 mm flange — the thickest 15-inch flange documented in this session — the 18 Sound 15NMB1000 carries the structural reinforcement its extreme motor force and 6.5 mm Xmax with 8.0 mm Xvar demand.
Performance and Applications for the 18 Sound 15NMB1000
The 18 Sound 15NMB1000 delivers 101 dB sensitivity across a 45 Hz – 2500 Hz bandwidth — a genuinely narrow bandwidth confirming this driver’s mid-low, rather than full-range, positioning. The 900 W AES / 1800 W continuous program power handling is substantial, and combined with the driver’s extreme sensitivity, produces very high maximum sustained output.
18 Sound recommends a 50-litre (1.77 ft³) vented enclosure tuned to 60 Hz — a genuinely compact cabinet volume for a driver of this power class, a direct consequence of the 0.24 Qts extreme motor dominance keeping the driver’s behaviour tightly controlled even in a small enclosure.
The 18 Sound 15NMB1000 is designed for compact reflex enclosures, two-way systems with 1.4-inch to 2-inch compression drivers, and stage monitoring applications, and is also suitable for horn-loaded applications in multiway systems. In horn-loaded configuration, the 191 Hz EBP and 25.2 Tm force factor combine for output authority that few 15-inch drivers from any manufacturer can approach.
For stage monitor applications specifically, the combination of high sensitivity, extreme motor control, and substantial power handling means the 18 Sound 15NMB1000 can deliver monitor SPL levels with tight, well-controlled low-mid output that resists the muddiness looser-motor drivers can exhibit at high stage volume.
The comparison to the 15NMB420 documented earlier in this session shows the clear generational and application difference: the 15NMB420 delivers 99 dB with a 75 mm coil at 3.9 kg for compact two-way systems with wider 5000 Hz bandwidth; the 18 Sound 15NMB1000 delivers 101 dB with a 100 mm coil at 6.0 kg, narrower 2500 Hz bandwidth, but nearly 33% more force factor (25.2 vs 19.0 Tm) — a driver built specifically for horn-loaded and stage-monitor applications where extreme motor authority matters more than bandwidth.
Conclusion – 18 Sound 15NMB1000 Mid-Low Driver
The 18 Sound 15NMB1000 delivers the highest force factor of any driver documented across this entire session — 25.2 Tm from a 100 mm copper ISV coil with SDR distortion reduction, driving a carbon fibre reinforced cone at 101 dB sensitivity. The 0.24 Qts and 191 Hz EBP confirm extreme motor dominance purpose-built for horn-loaded, two-way, and stage monitoring applications.
At 6.0 kg, this represents an exceptional power-to-weight achievement for a driver of this motor force class. 18 Sound now lists the ferrite 15MB1000 as the current alternative, but for applications specifically requiring neodymium’s weight advantage alongside this level of motor authority, the 18 Sound 15NMB1000 remains one of the most capable mid-low 15-inch drivers documented in this session.
