The 18 Sound 6NMB420 is the highest-sensitivity 6.5-inch driver 18 Sound has ever made. At 100 dB — three decibels above the 6NMB900 that succeeded it — the 18 Sound 6NMB420 produces more mid-band output per watt than most 8-inch and many 10-inch professional mid-bass drivers. It carries the same neodymium motor with ACS cooling, the same SDR distortion reduction, the same 0.1 mH inductance, and the same 73 mm depth as the 6NMB900 — but with a 110 Hz Fs and 289 Hz EBP that define a more midrange-focused alignment producing maximum output in the 250–3000 Hz band.

The 100 dB sensitivity from a 6.5-inch driver weighing 1.25 kg is an extraordinary figure. It exceeds the 8NMB420’s 95 dB from an 8-inch ISV platform by 5 dB. It exceeds the 10NW650’s 96 dB from a 10-inch neodymium woofer by 4 dB. The 18 Sound 6NMB420 produces more acoustic power per watt from 6.5 inches than larger-format drivers produce from larger cones with larger coils — the 8.5 g moving mass, 9.0 Tm force factor, and ultra-low 0.1 mH inductance combine to create the most efficient small-format mid-bass transducer in 18 Sound’s history.

The 18 Sound 6NMB420 was specifically designed for line array systems and compact two-way applications where high intelligibility is required. 18 Sound positions it for use as a mid-bass driver with high-pass above 200 Hz and low-pass up to 3 kHz — the same frequency band as the 6NMB900, but with 3 dB more output per watt and a higher-frequency alignment optimised for maximum mid-band presence.

18 Sound now lists the 6NMB900 as the current alternative model. The 6NMB900 trades 3 dB of sensitivity for a lower 95 Hz Fs that extends the usable bass range deeper. But the 18 Sound 6NMB420’s 100 dB remains unmatched by any current 6.5-inch driver in the catalogue — and for applications where mid-band sensitivity is the priority, the 18 Sound 6NMB420 is the driver that set the standard.


Design and Construction of the 18 Sound 6NMB420

The 18 Sound 6NMB420 shares its physical platform with the 6NMB900 — the same chassis, the same external neodymium magnet encapsulated in the basket for Active Cooling System (ACS) heat transfer, the same SDR demodulating ring, and the same 73 mm depth at 1.25 kg. The differences are in the motor alignment and cone/surround tuning that produce the different sensitivity and Fs.

The 44 mm (1.75-inch) aluminium voice coil is the same diameter and material as the 6NMB900’s. The lightweight aluminium winding keeps the moving mass to 8.5 g — marginally heavier than the 6NMB900’s 7.4 g but still lighter than the 5W430’s 8.2 g from the smaller 5-inch format.

The 9.0 Tm force factor is 0.5 Tm higher than the 6NMB900’s 8.5 Tm. The slightly stronger motor driving the marginally heavier cone assembly at a higher Fs (110 vs 95 Hz) is the parameter set that produces 100 dB instead of 97 dB. The higher Fs means less compliance in the suspension — the stiffer system resonates at a higher frequency, which shifts the energy balance upward, putting more output in the mid-band where the 18 Sound 6NMB420 is designed to operate.

The external neodymium magnet assembly with ACS encapsulation matches the 6NMB900. The back plate has maximum contact with the basket interior, providing the thermal path that sustains the 200 W AES / 260 W program power rating. The encapsulated design draws heat from the motor directly through the basket structure.

The SDR (Single Demodulating Ring) reduces flux modulation during excursion, flattening impedance and phase with constant power transfer. The SDR’s contribution to the 0.1 mH inductance is the same as on the 6NMB900 — the ring absorbs the eddy currents that generate inductance variation, producing the virtually flat impedance curve that both drivers share.

The 0.1 mH Le matches the 6NMB900 exactly — the same record-low inductance for an LF driver. The impedance curve is essentially resistive from DC through the 7000 Hz upper operating range. Crossover networks see a purely resistive load with no inductive phase shift to compensate for.

The curvilinear cone uses 18 Sound’s high-damping pulp composition with humidity-repellent treatment. The triple roll surround provides controlled compliance through the 3 mm Xmax, with specific attention to damping the bell-mode resonances that generate mid-range coloration. 18 Sound notes that particular efforts were dedicated to the surround shape and material design to minimise mid-range resonances.

The 3 mm Xmax defines the 18 Sound 6NMB420 as a sensitivity-optimised mid-bass driver. The short excursion trades bass displacement for mid-band efficiency — every design parameter prioritises output in the 200–3000 Hz band over low-frequency extension. The 200 Hz lower limit means a woofer or sub section handles everything below.

At 1.25 kg, 162 mm overall diameter, 148 mm baffle cutout, 73 mm depth, and 11 mm flange, the 18 Sound 6NMB420 is physically identical to the 6NMB900. The two drivers are completely interchangeable in the same cabinet — same cutout, same bolt circle, same depth.


Performance and Applications for the 18 Sound 6NMB420

The 18 Sound 6NMB420 delivers 100 dB sensitivity across a 200 Hz – 7000 Hz bandwidth. The 100 dB is the highest sensitivity of any 6.5-inch driver in 18 Sound’s range — current or legacy — and exceeds the sensitivity of the 8NMB420 (95 dB), 8MB500 (95 dB), 8M400F (100.5 dB at 8 inches), and 10NW650 (96 dB). A 6.5-inch driver matching or exceeding 8 and 10-inch mid-bass drivers on output per watt.

The 110 Hz Fs and 289 Hz EBP define the most midrange-focused alignment of any 18 Sound 6.5-inch driver. The 289 Hz EBP confirms extreme motor dominance — the motor has absolute authority over the 8.5 g cone through the 3 mm excursion range. The high Fs means the driver’s energy is concentrated above 110 Hz — maximum output in the 200–3000 Hz band where vocal fundamentals, speech consonants, and musical presence live.

The comparison to the 6NMB900 is the decision every builder faces. 18 Sound designed the 6NMB900 as the evolution of the 18 Sound 6NMB420, specifically to address the low-frequency limitation. The 6NMB900’s lower 95 Hz Fs and larger 10.3 dm³ Vas extend the usable bass range deeper — more output around and below 200 Hz. But the 6NMB900 pays for that extension with 3 dB of sensitivity — 97 vs 100 dB.

For applications where the 6.5-inch driver operates strictly above 200 Hz — the mid-bass section of a three-way system, a line array mid-band element, a horn-loaded mid-frequency driver — the 18 Sound 6NMB420’s 100 dB delivers more output per watt than the 6NMB900 can match. The higher Fs isn’t a limitation when the high-pass filter is set above 200 Hz anyway — the driver operates entirely within its sweet spot.

For applications where the 6.5-inch needs to reach lower — compact two-way systems where the driver handles content below 200 Hz, applications without a dedicated woofer below — the 6NMB900’s lower Fs and more extended bass alignment is the better choice.

18 Sound recommends a 4-litre enclosure for the 18 Sound 6NMB420 — slightly smaller than the 6NMB900’s 6-litre recommendation. The 0.33 Qts produces tight, controlled mid-bass in the compact volume. Sealed enclosures work from as small as 2 litres.

The 0.1 mH inductance provides the same crossover advantage as the 6NMB900. Passive networks see a resistive load. Active systems see predictable impedance. DSP requires minimal corrective processing. The impedance behaves like a textbook resistor from DC to 7 kHz.

In line array applications, the 18 Sound 6NMB420’s 100 dB sensitivity means each 6.5-inch element produces maximum mid-band output from minimum amplification. For arrays where each element runs from a shared amplifier channel, 3 dB more sensitivity per element means either 3 dB more total array output or the same output at half the amplifier power. The 16 Ω variant enables multi-driver parallel and series-parallel configurations.

The physical interchangeability with the 6NMB900 means existing 6NMB420 installations can be upgraded to the 6NMB900 for deeper bass extension, or existing 6NMB900 systems can specify the 18 Sound 6NMB420 for 3 dB more mid-band sensitivity — same cabinet, same crossover topology, different alignment.
