The 90° horizontal fills a typical venue from a single cabinet position. The 60° vertical focuses energy on the audience plane while keeping ceiling and floor reflections under control. The constant-directivity design ensures this coverage stays consistent across frequency — not just at 2 kHz where most horns measure well, but from 1.2 kHz through 16 kHz where the coverage matters most.
The 0.8 kHz cutoff is lower than most 1.4-inch horns achieve. Design and Construction of the 18 Sound XR1496C
The 18 Sound XR1496C uses a constant-directivity flare profile with a 35 mm (1.4-inch) throat entry expanding to a 270 × 270 mm mouth. The constant-directivity approach shapes the flare to maintain the stated coverage angles as consistently as possible across the operating bandwidth — counteracting the natural tendency of all finite-sized horns to narrow their coverage as frequency increases.
The 270 × 270 mm square mouth provides enough radiating area for the horn to establish directivity control at 1.2 kHz. Below this frequency, the mouth becomes too small relative to the wavelength, and coverage widens toward omnidirectional. Above 16 kHz, wavelengths become too short for the mouth geometry to prevent narrowing. Within the 1.2–16 kHz window, the 18 Sound XR1496C holds 90° × 60° with the consistency that the constant-directivity designation promises.
The practical consequence for the audience is straightforward. A listener at the edge of the 90° horizontal coverage hears tonal balance close to what the on-axis listener hears. The high frequencies don’t drop off dramatically as you move off-axis — the rolloff is gradual and controlled. The system sounds even across the coverage area rather than bright in the centre and dull at the edges.
The high-damping composite material is acoustically dead — it doesn’t ring like metal or flex like thin plastic. The composite absorbs vibrational energy that would otherwise propagate through the horn walls and radiate as coloration. The smooth interior surface minimises turbulence and boundary layer effects as sound waves travel from throat to mouth. And the composite construction keeps weight to 1.4 kg — lighter than an equivalent aluminium horn while providing more damping.

The 180 mm depth places the horn body behind the baffle. The 240 × 240 mm square baffle cutout provides a clean mounting interface, and the horn’s physical dimensions match the XR1464C exactly — same face, same cutout, same depth. The two horns are completely interchangeable in the same cabinet.
Performance and Applications for the 18 Sound XR1496C
The 18 Sound XR1496C provides 90° × 60° constant-directivity coverage from 1.2 kHz through 16 kHz when loaded with a suitable 1.4-inch exit compression driver. The horn defines the system’s coverage pattern — the compression driver provides the acoustic energy, and the horn shapes it into the controlled coverage window.
The 90° horizontal coverage is wide enough for small to mid-sized venues from a single cabinet position. It fills the room without requiring additional cabinets for horizontal coverage, while maintaining enough directional control to produce useful SPL at moderate throw distances. For wider venues, multiple cabinets can be arrayed horizontally with overlapping 90° patterns.
The 60° vertical focuses energy on the audience plane. In a typical deployment with the speaker elevated above the audience, the 60° window directs output downward toward the listeners and away from the ceiling. The wider vertical coverage compared to the XR1464C’s 40° makes the 18 Sound XR1496C more forgiving of speaker placement height — there’s more vertical coverage to work with before listeners fall outside the pattern.
The choice between the 18 Sound XR1496C and the XR1464C is about venue geometry. The 18 Sound XR1496C’s 90° × 60° covers a wider area at shorter throw — better for small to mid-sized rooms, wider seating areas, and applications where the audience wraps around the speaker position. The XR1464C’s 60° × 40° concentrates energy at longer throw — better for deep venues, narrow seating, and applications where SPL at distance is the priority.
Both horns share the same 270 × 270 mm face, 240 × 240 mm cutout, 180 mm depth, and 1.4 kg weight. One cabinet design accepts either horn. System designers can stock both and choose based on the venue — the 18 Sound XR1496C for wide coverage, the XR1464C for long throw.
The very low distortion at high sound pressure levels is a consequence of the composite material’s damping and the constant-directivity flare’s smooth internal geometry. The flare transitions progressively from throat to mouth without abrupt cross-sectional changes that would generate internal reflections and distortion products. At high SPL, the horn stays clean.
The 18 Sound XR1496C pairs with any 1.4-inch exit compression driver — 18 Sound, B&C (DE254TN, DE52, DE602, DE610, DE618TN, DE800, DE880TN, DE900TN), or any other manufacturer with standard 1.4-inch exits. The 35 mm throat is universal.
For comparison with the PR614 (also 18 Sound, also 1.4-inch, but 60° × 40°): the PR614 uses an elliptical aluminium body (330 × 210 mm) optimised for 12-inch woofer baffles with constant directivity to 18 kHz.
