B&C 18NBX100 – Precision 18-Inch Neodymium Woofer with Best-in-Class Weight

The B&C 18NBX100 is a neodymium-powered 18-inch woofer that weighs just 9.05 kg — making it one of the lightest high-performance 18-inch drivers available from any manufacturer. That weight figure isn’t achieved by cutting corners. The B&C 18NBX100 packs an aluminium demodulating ring, a ventilated voice coil gap, 10 mm of linear excursion, and a 1200 W AES power rating into a package that’s lighter than most budget ferrite 18s.

With 96.5 dB sensitivity and 2% reference efficiency across a 35 Hz – 1000 Hz bandwidth, this driver delivers strong output from modest amplification while maintaining the low-distortion performance that the demodulating ring and ventilated gap provide. It’s a true all-rounder — equally capable as a subwoofer in a vented cabinet or as a dedicated bass driver in a two-way or three-way system.

For builders where every kilogram matters — touring rigs, flown systems, portable PA, or any application where you’re lifting cabinets repeatedly — the B&C 18NBX100 proves that neodymium isn’t just about saving weight. It’s about saving weight while gaining performance.

Design and Construction of the B&C 18NBX100

The B&C 18NBX100 runs a 100 mm (4-inch) copper voice coil wound on a glass fibre former. The 25 mm winding depth operating in an 11 mm magnetic gap yields 10 mm of linear one-way excursion (Xmax) with an additional 12 mm of travel (Xvar) before mechanical limits. That 22 mm total one-way excursion before damage provides comfortable headroom for transient peaks during sustained high-output use.

The motor uses a neodymium inside-slug magnet in a T-pole configuration, producing 1.1 T of flux density and a force factor (Bl) of 24.8 Tm. The neodymium motor is the primary reason the B&C 18NBX100 weighs 9.05 kg — a savings of over 6 kg compared to the ferrite-motored 18TBW100, which uses the same frame diameter. For a touring rig running eight or twelve subs, that weight difference adds up fast across the truck.

An aluminium demodulating ring sits in the motor assembly to reduce flux modulation in the voice coil gap. This directly lowers harmonic and intermodulation distortion, keeping the output cleaner as excursion and power increase. A ventilated voice coil gap allows air circulation around the coil, reducing power compression so the B&C 18NBX100 maintains its rated output during long sets rather than gradually losing headroom as the coil heats up.

Suspension is handled by a double silicone spider with optimised compliance and a triple-roll surround. The radial cone features TWP waterproof treatment on both sides. The 8 Ω nominal impedance is ideal for parallel wiring in dual-driver cabinets, and a 4 Ω variant is available for single-driver applications.

Performance and Applications for the B&C 18NBX100

The B&C 18NBX100 delivers 96.5 dB sensitivity and 2% reference efficiency across a 35 Hz – 1000 Hz bandwidth. That combination of sensitivity and bandwidth makes it genuinely versatile — it works as a dedicated subwoofer driver in vented cabinets and as a bass section driver in multi-way systems where the crossover point needs to sit higher than what a typical sub driver can handle cleanly.

The Thiele–Small parameters show a well-balanced alignment profile. A Qts of 0.38 and an EBP of 88 Hz place the B&C 18NBX100 in vented enclosure territory with enough flexibility for builders to explore different tuning strategies. B&C recommends a 200-litre (7.1 ft³) vented enclosure tuned to 35 Hz — a practical size that delivers solid sub-bass extension without requiring an oversized cabinet.

Compared to the ferrite-motored 18TBW100, the B&C 18NBX100 trades some power handling (1200 W vs 1500 W AES) and excursion (10 mm vs 12 mm Xmax) for a 6.35 kg weight reduction and a half-dB gain in sensitivity. For applications where weight is the deciding factor — flown arrays, portable PA, one-person load-in situations — that trade-off is overwhelmingly worth it. You’re giving up brute force for agility without sacrificing the premium features that keep distortion low and output consistent.

Ideal applications for the B&C 18NBX100 include:

  • Lightweight touring subwoofer and bass cabinets where weight is critical
  • Flown subwoofer arrays where every kilogram affects rigging loads
  • Portable PA and DJ systems designed for easy transport and one-person setup
  • Multi-way speaker systems using an 18-inch bass section with mid-range crossover
  • Dual-driver cabinets using 8 Ω parallel pairs for 4 Ω loading

Conclusion – B&C 18NBX100 Woofer

The B&C 18NBX100 is the driver you choose when weight is non-negotiable but performance can’t be compromised. At 9.05 kg, it’s lighter than every ferrite 18-inch driver in B&C’s range — yet it carries the same premium features as the heavier 18TBW100: an aluminium demodulating ring for low distortion and a ventilated gap for reduced power compression. That combination of light weight and clean output is what neodymium makes possible.

The versatile Qts of 0.38 and 35 Hz – 1000 Hz bandwidth make the B&C 18NBX100 suitable for both dedicated sub duties and broader bass applications in multi-way systems. Whether you’re building lightweight touring subs, portable PA cabinets, or flown arrays where rigging weight limits dictate driver choice, this driver delivers the performance-to-weight ratio that justifies the neodymium premium.

For builders who’ve been running ferrite 18s and are ready to cut weight without cutting capability, the B&C 18NBX100 is the logical step up. It’s proof that lighter doesn’t have to mean lesser.
