18 Sound 12LW801 – Compact Subwoofer 12-Inch Driver with DSS Suspension and Carbon Fibre Reinforced Cone

The 18 Sound 12LW801 is a 12-inch low frequency driver achieving high SPL at low frequencies with reduced THD, designed for use as a low bass or subwoofer component in either highly compact reflex, bandpass, or horn-loaded configurations. It provides clean, linear frequency reproduction at high power levels, or as part of a compact high-power fullrange system. In its reflex configuration, it can be used in extremely compact enclosures (40–70 litres), making it ideal for portable applications such as road shows or use with bass musical instruments.

The high excursion capabilities of the double-action roll surround and suspension system, in conjunction with 18 Sound’s Double Silicon Spider technology (DSS), enable the 18 Sound 12LW801 to achieve exceptionally high levels of linear travel for a 12-inch unit — the 8.0 mm Xmax is the highest we’ve documented among 18 Sound’s ferrite 12-inch drivers, exceeded only by the neodymium DSS-equipped 12NW530 (also 8.0 mm) and the extreme long-throw 12NLW9410 (11.0 mm).

With its custom design surround, the carbon fibre reinforced curvilinear ribbed cone assures smooth response and exceptional strength, with maximum reliability under high mechanical stress. The 75 mm state-of-the-art voice coil is similar to that of 18 Sound’s 18LW1400 top-of-the-range model — a direct lineage claim connecting this compact 12-inch subwoofer specialist to the company’s flagship 18-inch platform.

At 8.1 kg with 500 W AES / 800 W continuous program power handling, and cone plate corrosion treatment that 18 Sound describes as more effective than after any other treatment in use today, the 18 Sound 12LW801 is purpose-built for compact subwoofer applications demanding maximum excursion and durability.

Design and Construction of the 18 Sound 12LW801

The 75 mm state-of-the-art voice coil is similar to that of 18 Sound’s 18LW1400 top-of-the-range model. It employs Interleaved Sandwich Voice Coil (ISV), in which a high-strength fibreglass former carries windings on both its outer and inner surfaces, resulting in a mass-balanced coil and providing a uniform motive drive. This, in conjunction with the use of unique high-temperature resin adhesives, creates an extremely linear motor assembly with a reduced tendency for break-up under hard drive conditions.

Excellent heat dissipation has been achieved by incorporating air channels between the basket and the top plate. Maximum flux concentration and force factor in the gap is assured by the unique shape and design of the top and back plates, designed using 18 Sound’s in-house Magnetic Flux FEA CAD resource — the 20.3 Tm force factor driving 84 g of moving mass produces 96 dB sensitivity and the 0.33 Qts / 158 Hz EBP alignment consistent with a genuinely compact-reflex-optimised subwoofer transducer.

The high excursion capabilities of the double-action roll surround and suspension system, in conjunction with 18 Sound’s Double Silicon Spider (DSS) technology, enable the driver to achieve exceptionally high levels of linear travel for a 12-inch unit. DSS uses two silicon spiders working in combination with the surround to provide symmetric large-signal behaviour throughout the entire excursion range — the same technology found on the neodymium 12NW530, here applied to a ferrite platform explicitly targeting compact subwoofer duty rather than the 12NW530’s high-power neodymium approach.

With its custom design surround, the carbon fibre reinforced curvilinear ribbed cone assures smooth response and exceptional strength, with maximum reliability under high mechanical stress — carbon fibre reinforcement in a ribbed cone structure, the same fundamental concept found on the neodymium 12NLW9300, applied here to withstand the mechanical demands of the driver’s 8.0 mm Xmax at sustained high power.

Due to the increasing use of high power audio systems at outdoor events or in marine environments, the ability to perform properly under inclement weather conditions is an essential part of 18 Sound’s philosophy. This is achieved using an exclusive cone treatment which improves pulp strength and gives water-repellent properties to the cone. In addition, a special treatment is applied to the top and back plates making the loudspeaker resistant to the corrosive effects of salts and oxidisation — 18 Sound specifically states this treatment is more effective than after any other treatment in use today, a stronger claim than the standard “far more resistant” language found on most other driver pages.

At 8.1 kg, 315 mm overall diameter, 282 mm baffle cutout, 159 mm depth, and 20 mm flange — the thickest flange of any 12-inch driver we’ve documented — the 18 Sound 12LW801 carries substantial construction reflecting the DSS suspension hardware and carbon fibre reinforced cone assembly.

Performance and Applications for the 18 Sound 12LW801

The 18 Sound 12LW801 delivers 96 dB sensitivity across a 40 Hz – 4000 Hz bandwidth. The 40 Hz lower frequency limit is among the deepest we’ve documented in 18 Sound’s 12-inch range, matching the neodymium DG-family 12NTLX3500’s territory but from a considerably different, ferrite/DSS-based platform.

18 Sound recommends a 70-litre (2.47 ft³) vented enclosure tuned to 60 Hz, with the driver capable of extremely compact enclosures ranging from 40 to 70 litres — explicitly positioned as ideal for portable applications such as road shows or use with bass musical instruments, a distinctive application category not found on any other 12-inch driver we’ve covered.

The 500 W AES / 800 W continuous program power handling, combined with the 8.0 mm Xmax and DSS suspension’s symmetric large-signal control, delivers clean, linear frequency reproduction at high power levels — the driver was specifically engineered to sustain distortion control at the high excursion levels compact subwoofer reflex designs demand.

The comparison to the neodymium DSS-equipped 12NW530 shows two different applications of the same fundamental suspension technology. The 12NW530 delivers similar 96 dB sensitivity and identical 8.0 mm Xmax from a neodymium motor at 4.0 kg, with SDR distortion reduction and a narrower 48–3200 Hz bandwidth explicitly optimised for dedicated subwoofer duty. The 18 Sound 12LW801 delivers the same DSS excursion control from a ferrite platform at more than double the weight (8.1 kg), with a wider 40–4000 Hz bandwidth extending it toward compact fullrange system use alongside pure subwoofer applications.

For touring subwoofers, portable road-show systems, bass instrument amplification, and compact bandpass or horn-loaded configurations where the driver’s specific combination of high excursion, carbon fibre cone durability, and ferrite cost matter, the 18 Sound 12LW801 delivers a genuinely distinctive specification within 18 Sound’s 12-inch range.

Conclusion – 18 Sound 12LW801 Subwoofer Driver

The 18 Sound 12LW801 is a compact subwoofer specialist built around the same DSS (Double Silicon Spider) suspension technology found on the neodymium 12NW530, here delivered from a ferrite platform with a 75 mm ISV coil sharing lineage with 18 Sound’s 18LW1400 flagship. The carbon fibre reinforced curvilinear ribbed cone and 8.0 mm Xmax combine for exceptional excursion capability and mechanical durability in a 12-inch format.

Purpose-built for extremely compact reflex enclosures (40–70 litres), road show and portable applications, and bass instrument amplification, the 18 Sound 12LW801 achieves high SPL at low frequencies with reduced THD — exactly the specification 18 Sound engineered it to deliver.
