18 Sound 12ND930 – Previous-Generation Flagship 12-Inch Neodymium Woofer with DDR and Large Heatsink Cooling

The 18 Sound 12ND930 is a high power, high output, low frequency woofer meeting the most stringent requirements in high-quality professional transducers — the previous generation of 18 Sound’s 12-inch flagship platform, since superseded by the improved-construction 12ND940. With a 75 mm copper ISV voice coil, Double Demodulating Rings (DDR), a dedicated large heatsink in direct contact with both the basket and magnetic structure, and 98 dB sensitivity from 500 W AES / 800 W continuous program power handling, the 18 Sound 12ND930 remains a formidable specification even as 18 Sound now points builders toward the 12W750 as the listed alternative.

Thanks to its versatility, the 18 Sound 12ND930 can be used in two-way compact reflex enclosures with a 1.4-inch compression driver, in multi-way systems, and in high-loading subwoofers as small as 50 litres — spanning compact reflex, band-pass, and horn-loaded configurations. The neodymium magnet assembly assures high flux concentration, low power compression, and excellent heat exchange, since the external magnet configuration is considerably more efficient than traditional under-pole magnet topology, resulting in high levels of force factor and power handling with an optimum power-to-weight ratio.

The direct contact between the large heat sink and the basket, together with the magnetic structure, represents a fundamental improvement in thermal connection and heat dissipation. At 4.4 kg with a linen M-roll surround highly resistant to ageing and fatigue, and a special coating on both plates making the driver far more resistant to the corrosive effects of salts and oxidisation, the 18 Sound 12ND930 was engineered as 18 Sound’s benchmark 12-inch neodymium platform before the 12ND940’s arrival.


Design and Construction of the 18 Sound 12ND930

The 18 Sound 12ND930 employs a 75 mm (3-inch) copper Interleaved Sandwich Voice Coil (ISV), in which a high-strength fibreglass former carries windings on both the outer and inner surfaces to achieve a mass-balanced coil. The final result is an extremely linear motor assembly with a reduced tendency for eccentric behaviour when driven hard — the same ISV principle found throughout 18 Sound’s range, here using copper winding rather than the aluminium and edgewound copper used on the successor 12ND940.

The already low distortion and sound quality are further improved by Double Demodulating Rings (DDR), that flatten impedance and phase figures with a constant power transfer. Despite the DDR technology, the 18 Sound 12ND930’s 1.65 mH Le is notably higher than the 12ND940’s single-SDR 0.57 mH — the 75 mm copper coil’s larger conductor mass and different winding geometry produce more residual inductance even with dual-ring compensation, illustrating how coil material and construction can matter as much as ring count for inductance outcomes.

The direct contact between the large heat sink and the basket, together with the magnetic structure, represents a fundamental improvement in thermal connection and heat dissipation, increasing power handling capabilities and lowering power compression — a genuinely substantial physical heatsink mass bonded directly to the chassis, distinct from the airway-based cooling found on many other 18 Sound drivers.

The curvilinear cone profile, created with a special high-strength wood pulp, has been designed to achieve the best possible linearity within its frequency range. The cone surround, in linen material, is highly resistant to ageing and fatigue. The in-house developed cone treatment is a humidity repellent and significantly dampens bell-mode resonance.

The 21.2 Tm force factor driving 57 g of moving mass produces 98 dB sensitivity and the 0.21 Qts / 227 Hz EBP alignment — extreme motor dominance, though not quite matching the successor 12ND940’s 0.20 Qts and 245 Hz EBP.

A special coating applied to both the top and back plates makes the 18 Sound 12ND930 far more resistant to the corrosive effects of salts and oxidisation.

At 4.4 kg, 315 mm overall diameter, 282 mm baffle cutout, and 140 mm depth, the 18 Sound 12ND930 is 100 g heavier than the 12ND940 (4.3 kg) and marginally shallower (140 vs 147 mm), reflecting the different heatsink and coil construction between the two generations.


Performance and Applications for the 18 Sound 12ND930

The 18 Sound 12ND930 delivers 98 dB sensitivity across a 46 Hz – 4500 Hz bandwidth — 2 dB below the 12ND940’s 100 dB but with a wider upper bandwidth (4500 vs 3000 Hz) and a deeper lower frequency limit (46 vs 50 Hz), giving this earlier generation genuine advantages in both bass extension and upper mid-bass reach that its successor traded away for higher overall sensitivity and lower Qts.

18 Sound recommends a 70-litre (2.47 ft³) vented enclosure tuned to 52 Hz — a larger cabinet volume than the 12ND940’s 30-litre recommendation, reflecting the different Vas and Qts alignment between the two generations. The driver’s versatility spans two-way compact reflex enclosures with 1.4-inch compression drivers, multi-way systems, and high-loading subwoofers as small as 50 litres.

The 500 W AES / 800 W continuous program power handling is lower than the 12ND940’s 600 W AES / 1200 W, but the large heatsink’s direct thermal contact with the basket and magnetic structure provides genuinely effective power compression control — the mechanism 18 Sound specifically credits for increased power handling capability and lower compression figures under sustained load.

The 6.5 mm Xmax is notably less than the 12ND940’s 7.6 mm, reflecting the different motor and suspension tuning between generations.

The comparison to the 12ND940 gives builders a clear picture of what changed between generations. The successor delivers higher sensitivity (100 vs 98 dB), higher power handling (600 vs 500 W AES), more Xmax (7.6 vs 6.5 mm), and dramatically lower inductance (0.57 vs 1.65 mH) — the improved construction 18 Sound specifically claims. The 18 Sound 12ND930 retains a wider upper bandwidth (4500 vs 3000 Hz) and deeper bass extension (46 vs 50 Hz Fs), making it arguably the better choice for applications specifically needing that extended upper-frequency reach in a two-way configuration with a 1.4-inch compression driver.

The 18 Sound 12ND930 was 18 Sound’s flagship 12-inch neodymium woofer before the 12ND940 succeeded it with improved construction. While the successor 12ND940 improves on sensitivity, power handling, Xmax, and especially inductance, the 18 Sound 12ND930 retains a wider bandwidth and deeper bass extension that may still suit specific two-way applications with 1.4-inch compression drivers. 18 Sound now lists the 12W750 — a ferrite driver — as the alternative/current model, suggesting the succession path from this specific neodymium platform is less direct than the 12ND940 relationship implies.

For builders maintaining existing 18 Sound 12ND930 installations, or specifically requiring its wider 4500 Hz bandwidth and 46 Hz bass extension, this driver remains a capable, well-engineered 12-inch neodymium platform.
