18 Sound 15NCX910N – 15-Inch Neodymium Coaxial with Nitride-Coated Titanium HF Diaphragm and True Piston Motion

The 18 Sound 15NCX910N is the Nitride-coated titanium variant of 18 Sound’s highest-sensitivity 15-inch coaxial platform. It shares every specification with the standard 15NCX910 and the beryllium 15NCX910BE — the same 99.5 dB LF sensitivity, the same 109 dB HF sensitivity, the same 75 mm ISV copper LF coil, the same 75 mm EWAL HF coil, the same SDR, the same 80° conical dispersion, the same 6.5 kg weight, and the same physical dimensions. The difference is the HF diaphragm treatment: 18 Sound’s proprietary Nitride coat on the titanium dome.

The Nitride coat is a ceramic surface treatment — titanium nitride (TiN) applied to the pure titanium diaphragm. The coating increases the stiffness of the titanium dome, which directly reduces the breakup resonances that untreated titanium exhibits in the upper treble. The result is a diaphragm that behaves more like a rigid piston across its operating range — the TPM (True Piston Motion) designation that 18 Sound gives to this technology.

The 18 Sound 15NCX910N sits between the standard 15NCX910 and the beryllium 15NCX910BE on the diaphragm performance spectrum. Standard titanium is the brightest and most resonant — maximum presence and projection with the characteristic upper treble peak. Beryllium is the smoothest and stiffest — minimum resonance, minimum distortion, maximum price. Nitride-coated titanium occupies the middle ground — stiffer and smoother than untreated titanium, less expensive than beryllium, with reduced resonances that bring the diaphragm’s behaviour closer to beryllium’s piston-like motion without the beryllium price premium.

For builders who want better treble quality than standard titanium but can’t justify beryllium’s cost, the 18 Sound 15NCX910N is the driver that bridges the gap. Same platform, same output, same weight — better diaphragm performance than the 15NCX910, more accessible price than the 15NCX910BE.


Design and Construction of the 18 Sound 15NCX910N

The 18 Sound 15NCX910N integrates the same two-section coaxial architecture shared across the entire 910 platform — the same single neodymium magnet motor, the same LF section, and the same HF section geometry. The Nitride coat treatment on the titanium dome is the single engineering change.

The LF section uses the identical 75 mm (3-inch) copper ISV voice coil found on the 15NCX910 and 15NCX910BE. The ISV architecture places conductor on both inner and outer surfaces of the former, creating the mass-balanced coil that produces linear motor behaviour. The copper winding sustains the 450 W AES / 900 W program power rating. The aluminium SDR demodulating ring reduces flux modulation during excursion, keeping harmonic distortion low.

The 21 Tm force factor driving the 86 g moving mass produces 99.5 dB sensitivity and 5% reference efficiency — the highest LF efficiency of any 18 Sound 15-inch coaxial. The curvilinear paper cone with water-repellent treatment, 7 mm Xmax, 55 Hz Fs, 0.33 Qts, and 161 Hz EBP are all identical to the other 910 variants. The LF section is the same driver regardless of which HF diaphragm sits at the centre.

The HF section uses the same 75 mm (3-inch) EWAL (Edge-Wound Aluminium) voice coil and the same copper sleeve on the pole piece. The proprietary HF architecture with its specific exit profile and waveguide coupling to the LF cone is shared across all 910 variants. The 109 dB HF sensitivity, 120 W AES / 240 W program power handling, and 1.2 kHz recommended crossover are identical.

The Nitride coat on the titanium dome is the defining feature. Titanium nitride is an extremely hard ceramic compound — harder than untreated titanium by a significant margin. When applied as a surface treatment to the titanium dome, it increases the effective stiffness of the diaphragm without adding meaningful mass. Stiffer diaphragms maintain pistonic behaviour at higher frequencies — the dome moves as a rigid body rather than flexing and breaking up into the resonant modes that produce the characteristic titanium treble peak.

18 Sound describes the effect directly: the Nitride coat increases the stiffness of titanium, reducing drastically resonances and distortion. The “drastically” is 18 Sound’s own characterisation, not marketing embellishment — the stiffness increase from the titanium nitride coating is measurable and its effect on breakup resonance is quantifiable. The dome’s first breakup frequency moves higher, and the energy of the breakup modes is reduced. The result is smoother upper treble response with less of the harsh, aggressive peaking that untreated titanium produces.

The TPM (True Piston Motion) technology designation describes the goal of the Nitride treatment: making the diaphragm behave as close to a perfect piston as possible. A perfect piston moves uniformly across its entire surface — every point on the dome moves the same distance at the same time. Real diaphragms flex, bend, and break up at higher frequencies, producing output that deviates from the input signal. The Nitride coat reduces this deviation, bringing the dome’s behaviour closer to the theoretical ideal.

The practical consequence sits between untreated titanium and beryllium. Untreated titanium produces a noticeable resonant peak in the 8–15 kHz region. Beryllium pushes this peak above the audible range or eliminates it entirely. Nitride-coated titanium reduces the peak’s amplitude and shifts it slightly higher in frequency — it doesn’t eliminate it the way beryllium does, but it reduces it enough to produce audibly smoother treble than untreated titanium.

At 6.5 kg, 393 mm overall diameter, 360 mm baffle cutout, and 205 mm depth, the 18 Sound 15NCX910N is physically identical to every other 910 variant. Same weight, same dimensions, same bolt circle, same flange. All 910 drivers are completely interchangeable in the same cabinet.


Performance and Applications for the 18 Sound 15NCX910N

The 18 Sound 15NCX910N delivers 99.5 dB LF sensitivity from 50 Hz to 4000 Hz and 109 dB HF sensitivity from the 1.2 kHz crossover point upward. Every measured output specification is identical to the 15NCX910 and 15NCX910BE. The sensitivity is the same because the Nitride coating doesn’t change the diaphragm’s mass or the motor’s force — it only changes the dome’s stiffness and breakup behaviour.

The difference shows up in the frequency response shape and the distortion measurements. In the 1.2–8 kHz range — below the breakup region — the 18 Sound 15NCX910N sounds essentially identical to the standard 15NCX910. Both produce the same output, the same tonal balance, the same presence. Above 8 kHz, the Nitride-coated dome’s reduced breakup produces a smoother, less peaky response. The brightness is still there — this is titanium, and it sounds like titanium — but the harshest edge of the upper treble peak is attenuated by the stiffer dome’s reduced resonance.

For live sound reinforcement, this translates to a compression driver that projects with titanium’s characteristic presence and cut-through, but with less listening fatigue over extended periods. A four-hour festival set or an all-day conference sounds less harsh through the 18 Sound 15NCX910N than through untreated titanium — the Nitride coat takes the edge off without taking the energy away.

For systems with DSP, the smoother starting response means less corrective EQ is needed in the upper treble. A standard titanium 15NCX910 might need 2–4 dB of parametric cut in the 10–14 kHz range to sound smooth. The 18 Sound 15NCX910N needs less — maybe 1–2 dB — because the Nitride coat has already reduced the peak at the diaphragm level. The DSP does less work, which means fewer filter stages, less phase distortion from the processing, and a more natural final result.
