15″ Woofer Driver

18 Sound 15ND930 – Previous-Generation Flagship 15-Inch Neodymium Woofer with DDR Distortion Reduction

The 18 Sound 15ND930 is a high power, high output, extended low frequency neodymium transducer which meets the most stringent requirements in high-quality professional transducers — the previous generation of 18 Sound’s 15-inch flagship platform, since superseded by the improved-construction 15ND940 documented immediately prior in this session. Notably, this page’s own alternative model listing points to the ferrite 15W930 rather than back to its neodymium successor — the same tangled succession pattern documented on the 12ND930/12ND940/12W750 relationship earlier in this session, where the predecessor flagship’s own listed alternative is a different-material driver rather than its direct replacement.

Thanks to its versatility, the 18 Sound 15ND930 can be used in two-way compact reflex enclosures with a 1.4-inch compression driver, in multiway systems, and in high-loading subwoofers as small as 70 litres — spanning compact reflex, bandpass, and horn-loaded configurations, and specifically recommended for multiway systems and studio monitoring applications, identical positioning to its successor.

The neodymium magnet assembly assures high flux concentration, low power compression, and excellent heat exchange, since the external magnet configuration is considerably more efficient than traditional under-pole magnet topology. The direct contact between the large heat sink and basket, together with the magnetic structure, represents a fundamental improvement in thermal connection and heat dissipation — the same large-heatsink cooling philosophy documented on the 12ND830 and 12ND930 at the smaller diameter.

The already low distortion and sound quality are further improved by Double Demodulating Rings (DDR) that flatten impedance and phase with a constant power transfer — a more sophisticated dual-ring distortion reduction approach than the single-ring SDR found on the successor 15ND940, though the resulting inductance is notably higher (1.61 vs 0.7 mH) despite the more elaborate ring technology. Available in 4, 8, and 16 Ω.

Design and Construction of the 18 Sound 15ND930

The 75 mm (3-inch) copper edge-wound voice coil assembly is wound on a strong fibreglass former to improve force transmission and power handling. The already low distortion and sound quality are further improved by Double Demodulating Rings (DDR) that flatten impedance and phase with a constant power transfer.

The direct contact between the large heat sink and basket, together with the magnetic structure, represents a fundamental improvement in thermal connection and heat dissipation. Hence, power handling capabilities are increased and power compression lowered — a genuinely substantial physical heatsink mass bonded directly to the chassis, distinct from the airway-based cooling found on several other 18 Sound drivers.

The deep-profile curvilinear cone, created from a special high-strength wood pulp, has been designed to achieve the best possible linearity within its frequency range. The cone surround, made from a linen material, is highly resistant to ageing and fatigue. The in-house developed cone treatment is a humidity repellent and significantly dampens bell-mode resonances.

The 23.8 Tm force factor driving 101 g of moving mass produces 98 dB sensitivity and the 0.22 Qts / 156 Hz EBP alignment — even more extreme motor dominance than the successor 15ND940’s 0.28 Qts, and a higher force factor (23.8 vs 21.9 Tm) despite the lighter moving mass difference being relatively modest.

A special coating applied to both the top and back plates makes the 18 Sound 15ND930 far more resistant to the corrosive effects of salts and oxidisation.

At 4.7 kg, 387 mm overall diameter, 353 mm baffle cutout, 177 mm depth, and 11 mm flange, the 18 Sound 15ND930 matches the successor 15ND940’s weight exactly, despite the different heatsink and coil construction between the two generations.

Performance and Applications for the 18 Sound 15ND930

The 18 Sound 15ND930 delivers 98 dB sensitivity across a 40 Hz – 4100 Hz bandwidth — 1 dB below the 15ND940’s 99 dB but with a considerably wider upper bandwidth (4100 vs 3500 Hz), giving this earlier generation a genuine advantage in upper mid-bass reach that its successor traded away.

18 Sound recommends a 110-litre (3.88 ft³) vented enclosure tuned to 40 Hz — a larger cabinet volume than the 15ND940’s 70-litre recommendation, reflecting the different Vas and Qts alignment between the two generations.

The 500 W AES / 800 W continuous program power handling is lower than the 15ND940’s 600 W AES / 1200 W — the successor’s improved construction delivers meaningfully more sustained power capacity. The 7.5 mm Xmax is also notably less than the successor’s 9.5 mm, reflecting the different motor and suspension tuning between generations.

The comparison to the 15ND940 gives builders a clear picture of what changed between generations, mirroring the exact pattern documented on the 12-inch equivalents. The successor delivers higher sensitivity (99 vs 98 dB), higher power handling (600 vs 500 W AES), more Xmax (9.5 vs 7.5 mm), and dramatically lower inductance (0.7 vs 1.61 mH) — the improved construction 18 Sound specifically claims. The 18 Sound 15ND930 retains a wider upper bandwidth (4100 vs 3500 Hz) and a slightly higher force factor (23.8 vs 21.9 Tm), making it arguably the better choice for applications specifically needing that extended upper-frequency reach in a two-way configuration with a 1.4-inch compression driver.

Conclusion – 18 Sound 15ND930 Woofer

The 18 Sound 15ND930 was 18 Sound’s flagship 15-inch neodymium woofer before the 15ND940 succeeded it with improved construction — mirroring the exact generational relationship documented on the 12-inch ND930/ND940 pairing earlier in this session. The 75 mm copper edgewound coil, DDR dual-ring distortion reduction, and large direct-contact heatsink combine for a driver meeting the most stringent requirements in high-quality professional transducers.

While the successor 15ND940 improves on sensitivity, power handling, Xmax, and especially inductance, the 18 Sound 15ND930 retains a wider bandwidth and slightly higher force factor that may still suit specific two-way applications with 1.4-inch compression drivers. 18 Sound’s own alternative model listing for this page points to the ferrite 15W930 rather than the neodymium 15ND940, suggesting the succession path from this specific platform is less direct than a simple generational upgrade.

For builders maintaining existing 18 Sound 15ND930 installations, or specifically requiring its wider 4100 Hz bandwidth, this driver remains a capable, well-engineered 15-inch neodymium platform.
