18 Sound 12LW800 – High-Performance 12-Inch Subwoofer Driver with DSS Suspension and 42 Hz Extension

The 18 Sound 12LW800 is a low frequency loudspeaker which, per 18 Sound’s own historic marketing description, sets a new industry standard in 12-inch (300 mm) high-performance transducers, achieving a remarkable 42 Hz downwards extension with 96 dB average sensitivity, handling peak power levels of 4000 W with remarkably low distortion and excellent transient response. Worth noting: the published specification table lists a 46–4200 Hz bandwidth rather than the 42 Hz figure quoted in the descriptive text — a discrepancy between 18 Sound’s marketing copy and formal spec sheet that builders should verify directly with 18 Sound or the datasheet PDF before final specification.

The 18 Sound 12LW800 is intended as the low bass or subwoofer component, either in highly compact reflex, bandpass, or horn-loaded configurations, to provide clean, linear frequency reproduction at high power levels, or as part of a compact high-power fullrange system. In its reflex configuration it can be used in extremely compact enclosures (40–70 litres), making it ideally suited to portable applications such as road shows and bass musical instruments, for “wedge” stage monitors, and similar deployments.

The high excursion capabilities of the double-action roll surround and suspension system, in conjunction with 18 Sound’s Double Silicon Spider (DSS), has enabled the 18 Sound 12LW800 to achieve very high levels of linear travel for a 12-inch unit. The carbon fibre reinforced curvilinear ribbed cone, with its custom design surround, assures smooth response and exceptional strength with maximum reliability under high mechanical stress — the same construction philosophy documented on the 12LW801, its close successor or sibling model.

The 75 mm state-of-the-art voice coil is similar to that fitted to 18 Sound’s 18LW1400 top-of-the-range model, employing the same ISV, DSS, and carbon fibre cone technology stack found on the 12LW801, but with a different Thiele-Small tuning — most notably a Qts of 0.29 (versus the 12LW801’s 0.33) and a 6.5 mm Xmax (versus 8.0 mm), suggesting these are genuinely distinct driver tunings rather than identical products under different model numbers.


Design and Construction of the 18 Sound 12LW800

The 75 mm state-of-the-art voice coil is similar to that fitted to 18 Sound’s 18LW1400 top-of-the-range model. It employs 18 Sound’s Interleaved Sandwich Voice Coil (ISV) in which a high-strength fibreglass former carries windings on both the outer and inner surfaces to achieve a mass-balanced coil and provide a uniform motive drive. This, in conjunction with the use of unique high-temperature resin adhesives, results in an extremely linear motor assembly with reduced tendency to break-up under high drive conditions.

Excellent heat dissipation is achieved by the incorporation of air channels between the basket and top plate. Maximum flux concentration and force factor in the gap is assured by the unique shape and design of the face and back plates, these having been researched and designed using 18 Sound’s in-house Magnetic Flux FEA CAD resource. The 21.3 Tm force factor driving 76.5 g of moving mass produces 96 dB sensitivity and the 0.29 Qts / 173 Hz EBP alignment.

The high excursion capabilities of the double-action roll surround and suspension system, in conjunction with the Double Silicon Spider (DSS), enable exceptionally high linear travel through the 6.5 mm Xmax — the DSS’s twin silicon spiders combining with the surround to provide symmetric large-signal behaviour and low harmonic distortion at varying excitation levels, the same fundamental technology found on both the 12LW801 and the neodymium 12NW530.

The carbon fibre reinforced curvilinear ribbed cone, with its custom design surround, assures smooth response and exceptional strength with maximum reliability under high mechanical stress.

With the increasing use of high power audio systems at outdoor events or in a marine environment, the ability to perform properly under inclement weather conditions is another part of 18 Sound’s philosophy. This is achieved by means of an exclusive cone treatment improving pulp strength and giving water-repellent properties to the cone. In addition, special treatment of both the face and back plates results in a product which is far more resistant to the corrosive effects of salts and oxidisation than any other treatment in use.

At 8.1 kg, 315 mm overall diameter, 282 mm baffle cutout, 151 mm depth, and 20 mm flange, the 18 Sound 12LW800 matches the 12LW801’s weight exactly, with a shallower depth (151 vs 159 mm).


Performance and Applications for the 18 Sound 12LW800

The 18 Sound 12LW800 delivers 96 dB sensitivity across a published 46 Hz – 4200 Hz bandwidth, despite the marketing text’s claim of 42 Hz downward extension — builders should confirm the actual usable low-frequency limit against the current datasheet PDF given this discrepancy.

18 Sound recommends a 50-litre (1.77 ft³) vented enclosure tuned to 55 Hz — smaller than the 12LW801’s 70-litre recommendation, and with a higher tuning frequency, reflecting the two drivers’ different Vas and Qts alignment despite their shared coil and cone technology.

The 500 W AES / 800 W continuous program power handling matches the 12LW801, and 18 Sound’s marketing text specifically claims peak power levels of 4000 W with remarkably low distortion — a substantially higher peak figure than the continuous program rating, describing transient/peak handling capability rather than sustained thermal capacity.

The application positioning explicitly includes wedge stage monitors alongside the road show, portable, and bass instrument applications shared with the 12LW801 — a slightly broader stated application range for this specific model.

The comparison between the 18 Sound 12LW800 and 12LW801 shows two drivers built from the same fundamental technology stack — 75 mm copper ISV coil, DSS suspension, carbon fibre reinforced ribbed cone, identical weight — but tuned differently. The 12LW801 delivers more Xmax (8.0 vs 6.5 mm) and a lower Qts (0.33 vs 0.29 — actually the 12LW800 has the lower Qts), positioning them for subtly different enclosure and excursion priorities within the same broad compact subwoofer category.
