18 Sound 12MB650 – High-Sensitivity Ferrite 12-Inch Mid-Bass for Stage Monitor and Two-Way Applications

The 18 Sound 12MB650 is a high sensitivity mid-bass driver with 800 W program power handling capabilities, explicitly positioned as either a bass/mid driver in compact two-way reflex enclosures or in high-quality stage monitor applications — a specific dual-application focus distinct from the horn-loaded midrange positioning found on the 12MB700, 12MB777, and 12MB810/720/710 family.

18 Sound engineers have obtained the best possible results with today’s available materials in terms of clean and undistorted LF reproduction at ultra-high SPL, with the lowest possible power compression figure. The 65 mm (2.5-inch) diameter state-of-the-art voice coil is made with edgewound aluminium wire wound over a high-strength fibreglass former — the EWAL (Edge-Wound Aluminium Voice Coil) technology, notably smaller than the 75 mm coils found across the rest of 18 Sound’s premium 12-inch mid-bass range.

A special low-density material air diffractor placed into the heatsink acts as a cooling system, increasing the power handling capability and lowering the power compression figure — a genuinely distinctive thermal engineering detail specific to this driver, working alongside the standard airway cooling that channels heated air from the voice coil and gap for dissipation through the chassis basket.

18 Sound now lists the 12MB700 as the alternative/current model — the same successor driver that consolidates several legacy 12-inch platforms into a single current recommendation.

Design and Construction of the 18 Sound 12MB650

The curvilinear paper cone, made from a special high-strength wood pulp, has been designed to achieve the best possible linearity within its intended frequency range and to control bell-mode resonances around the cone circumference. The cone is carried by a triple roll suspension formed of a linen-like material, which is more resistant to ageing and fatigue than traditional materials — the same durable linen-based surround philosophy found across 18 Sound’s premium mid-bass range.

The 65 mm diameter state-of-the-art voice coil is made with edgewound aluminium wire wound over a high-strength fibreglass former. This results in an extremely linear motor assembly with a reduced tendency for eccentric behaviour when driven hard. Voice coil cooling has been achieved by incorporating airways between the chassis back plate and the top plate of the magnet, allowing heated air from the voice coil and gap to be channelled away and dissipated by the chassis basket. Special attention was given to the optimisation of air flow into the gap without introducing audible noise — a genuinely distinctive design consideration, addressing the risk that aggressive cooling airflow can itself become an audible artefact.

A special low-density material air diffractor placed into the heatsink acts as a cooling system, increasing the power handling capability and lowering the power compression figure. This is the second driver in 18 Sound’s range we’ve documented using an air diffractor approach (alongside the 12NLW9300’s multi-cell diffractor in the backplate vent), here integrated into the heatsink itself rather than the backplate venting hole.

The magnetic structure has been optimised using FEA CAD resource, maximising the flux density in the voice coil gap. The 19.0 Tm force factor driving 48 g of moving mass produces 98 dB sensitivity and the 0.23 Qts / 200 Hz EBP alignment.

An exclusive treatment has been applied to the cone giving it water-repellent properties. In addition, another special treatment has been applied to the top and back plates making the transducer far more resistant to the corrosive effects of salts and oxidisation.

At 6.8 kg, 310 mm overall diameter, 280 mm baffle cutout, and 143 mm depth, the 18 Sound 12MB650 is notably lighter than the 75 mm-coil premium ferrite drivers (12MB700 at 8.3 kg, 12MB777 at 8.0 kg), consistent with its smaller 65 mm coil.

Performance and Applications for the 18 Sound 12MB650

The 18 Sound 12MB650 delivers 98 dB sensitivity across a 45 Hz – 5000 Hz bandwidth — the deepest bass extension (45 Hz) of any 12-inch ferrite mid-bass driver we’ve documented from 18 Sound, extending well below the 12MB700’s 60 Hz and the 12MB777’s 60 Hz lower limits.

18 Sound recommends a 100-litre (3.53 ft³) vented enclosure tuned to 53 Hz — by far the largest recommended cabinet volume of any 12-inch ferrite mid-bass we’ve covered, double the 12MB700’s 50-litre recommendation. This is consistent with the driver’s deeper bass extension intent and its explicit stage monitor application, where a larger enclosure volume is often practical and where extended low-frequency reproduction at high SPL is the priority over the tightest possible motor control.

The 800 W continuous program power handling, combined with the dedicated air diffractor cooling system and careful attention to noise-free airflow optimisation, positions the 18 Sound 12MB650 for sustained high-SPL stage monitor use where both thermal performance and mechanical noise from the cooling system itself matter — a monitor wedge sitting close to a performer’s ears benefits directly from cooling airflow that doesn’t introduce its own audible artefacts.

The comparison to the 12MB700 gives builders a clear picture of the trade-off. The 12MB700 delivers higher sensitivity (101.5 vs 98 dB), a larger 75 mm coil with DDR distortion reduction, and dual 8/16 Ω availability — positioned for horn-loaded midrange and demanding touring applications. The 18 Sound 12MB650 delivers deeper bass extension (45 vs 60 Hz), lighter weight (6.8 vs 8.3 kg), and a specific stage monitor application focus with dedicated noise-optimised cooling — a driver built for a different job entirely, even within the same broad ferrite mid-bass category.

Conclusion – 18 Sound 12MB650 Mid-Bass Driver

The 18 Sound 12MB650 is a high-sensitivity ferrite 12-inch mid-bass driver purpose-built for compact two-way reflex enclosures and high-quality stage monitor applications — a distinct application focus from the horn-loaded midrange positioning of its 75 mm-coil siblings. The 65 mm EWAL coil, dedicated air diffractor cooling with noise-optimised airflow, and 45 Hz bass extension combine for a driver specifically engineered for the demands of close-range monitoring at sustained high SPL.

18 Sound now lists the 12MB700 as the current alternative model. For applications specifically requiring the 18 Sound 12MB650’s deeper bass extension, lighter weight, or stage monitor-specific thermal engineering, this driver remains a distinctive specification within 18 Sound’s ferrite 12-inch range.
